So, I'm up in Lefthand in a side canyon setting up to shoot. Some guy and 2 girls with guns come up into the same area, which is about big enough for 1-2 people to shoot safely. This guy informs me that they will go further up the canyon and "call down when they are far enough up". WTF. I told him he was crazy, and that this was a really poor plan. Then I left to go somewhere else, as I don't really want to be anywhere near someone who is OK with being downrange of people shooting rifles.
Obviously, I don't want to be liable for hitting someone with a ricochet. I do feel like it is rude as hell (not to mention stupid) to walk up to people and just go downrange. Ask if you can shoot here also, I can share, or leave and go somewhere else, there are plenty of places.
What would you do? [Rant1]

Wouldn't really be a ricochet if it was a well placed shot on your part. [Coffee]
(Just kidding about the above comment, by the way. I would never condone the inappropriate or unsafe use of a firearm- especially against another one of God's creatures.)
What would you do? [Rant1]
Pony up some coin and join a private facility. The general population is just way to ignorant to be around firearms in my opinion.

what the real question is , why would you waste your time at left hand and a weekend at that ???
OK Boulder, guns, dirty hippies, pot heads, WTF did you expect.
-10 demerit points for being goofey.

I second this. In my adult shooting life, I've yet to go shooting at one of these ranges on public land. I love the idea of it, but after hearing all these breach of safety stories and the trash, I'm glad I joined a private range.
I don't think I've ever seen a blatant violation of the rules at the private ranges/clubs I've been to. There's no 'Bangers, Thugs or Yahoo's there.

+1. I couldn't agree more. I did actually see one guy at one of the private ranges I used to be a member of who had a few bad gun handling habits. Didn't take long before his membership was revoked. [Awesom]

Are there any decent private ranges anywhere near Berthoud? I wouldn't mind paying if there was something good nearby.
I'm not familiar with that area but hopefully someone who is will chime in soon.
I have been trying to find outdoor range near Longmont/Berthoud/Boulder etc, but results have not been very promising :(
This may be your best bet: www.triggertimegunclub.com
This is nice place for both pistol and rifle shooters, however it is quite a drive from Berthoud and I think they already have long waiting list: www.wildlifehunters.com

Ya, but like elk, the density per location is important.[Coffee]

What would I do?
Not hear them cause of my ear protection and keep about my business. If they choose to go downrange while I'm bangin away, well, that's just Darwin at work [UZI]

As every good Coloradan knows, Boulder = Stupid.
And I guess Squaw Pass, South site, Chaffee County range, Buffalo Creek, Johnny Park, Rampart range...all have 100% stellar shooters and everyone has an IQ above room temperature.
There is enough stupid to go around.

Pawnee Sportsman's Center. It's public on Friday afternoons and all weekend. $15 to get in. Or become a member for $175 a year for the whole family, and shoot anytime sun up to sun down. Never had an incident there.
