Greetings. I am in the process of evaluating the AR-15 for my first rifle purchase and I have a ton of learning to do. I shoot quite a bit every weekend and finally decided that it was time to purchase a good quality rifle such as the AR-15 or, dare I say it, the M1A. My wife convinced me to get the AR-15 first so she could shoot it. She has her "cute" (her words) SW .357 while my firearms are the CZ SP01, 10/22 and my trusty remington 870 12g.

But we both need an AR-15 to round out our family. So please be patient with me as I stumble through the learning curve of a new firearm. Our biggest question of the day (she is impatient to find a good AR) is what to begin with? We're leaning towards a 20" for accuracy even though the weight is slightly higher. Perhaps a better question would be what manufacturer to stay away from?

Welcome!

I am very happy with my rock river A2 midlength.
They are priced very reasonably & have a real good reputation.

Don't go to Jensen's in Loveland unless you bring a lot of water - you'll be drooling nonstop.
They're a rock river dealer and always have lots of goodies to see.

Come to our north shoot on the 21st & you'll find plenty of folks willing to let you try their guns.

Also, I noticed Jim has an AR for sale. Great price and he's been a member of the group for a long time.

Amazingly enough I stumbled across the north shoot location yesterday while driving around with my wife and daughter and here I found this site tonight. I guess there is no such thing as a coincidence! I'll have to take a drive up to Jensens (with lots of water) and talk with them a bit.

Welcome to the forum.

There are a lot of variations of ARs.
When your up at Jensens, ask them too.

Greetings and welcome.

When you get your rifle, remember that it won't actually exist until we see pics here. [wink]

Welcome to the forums. There are lots of good choices out there and I started with a Bushmaster M4A3. 16" bbl is fine for accuracy at most ranges.

I've heard of a lot of problems with Hesse/Vulcan Arms.

What a great excuse for the wife! In that case since I'll be Loveland today I guess I'll hit Jensens and pick up an RRA if I can. During lunch yesterday I looked at Armalite, Bushmaster and something called High Standard(?). But after talking with one of the clerks I decided to pay for a RRA so if things work out I might pick one up tonight.

RRA are great, try to get one with the National Match Trigger.I couldn't get a match trigger but I did manage to get a floating match barrel, 1:8 twist 16" RRA. Below are two pictures of the new firearm that I purchased at Jensen today. The bottom one is a size comparison against my 870 12g. I had to stitch the top photo together so you might see some weird seams in the photo. I picked up an EOTech hologram site for the AR-15. I'll probably scope it later but my wife wanted a good sight to use in-house so to speak if she cannot get to our "remy" for some reason.

I have to hit a CCW class tonight so I can't zero it until this weekend. Bummer. But I have lots of reading to do anyways. My wife fell in love with Jensens but the rifle is mine even though she insists that it is now hers and thanks me for her new present. A self-assured "hot" woman is fine, but at some point they need to keep in their place when it comes to my gear!

Damn! You don't mess around. Way to go!

Now the only other requirement is that you bring it to a shoot for the CO-AR "function test"

That next requirement I would be happy to oblige to. I would really like you experts to give it a try and provide some honest feedback about what needs fixing, what works, what to leave alone, etc.

Ah...it's nice to be officially recognized.

Welcome Oddthomas! Nice choice on guns. RRA is the way to go I think, I have a free floating Quad Rail System on mine so I can spend all my money buying stuff to add on to it. lol. It will be a sad day when nothing else will fit on it. lol. On second thought It just might be a good reason to go buy another one!
