So many of you know that I am a more concealed carry type of guy. I don't like sharing what I have. Keep in secret-keep it safe (I stole from a member here). However, it being perfectly legal to open carry I do once in a while.

This morning I was at my friend's who lives in a horse community with several homes on 2 to 5 acre lots. He is teaching me how to ride horses. We work all night together then before I head home to go to bed we ride for a couple hours. As always I carry a gun, like in everything else I do. I happen to open carry because it feels a little easier and it is slightly more country than city so I feel more comfortable doing it.

This morning as we're riding we stopped a long the way to chat up his neighbors about horsing stuff (I stayed silent because I don't know what I'm talking about). The couple was older but very nice, then when my horse turned they saw me open carrying and became completely disgusted that I was doing so. Not that it matters in this situation, but they know I'm a police officer at this point. The guy is from Boston so I politely explained to him that it is legal in Colorado to do so. However the disgust continued, so I just left it at that.

That's my story, I was just annoyed and decided to share it.

That's what happens when you get transplants moving here cause they want to try their hand at country life. Ignore em.
I had a similar situation once. Buddy and I riding down the road, stopped to chat with some people that lived down the road, who saw our guns (an SAA on my hip and another in a saddle horn holster, same for him)...
"Do you really need to ride around with those things?"
"It'd be ignorant and just plain stupid not to. Where yall from?"
"California, Orange County. Moved here last year."
"Uh huh. Well sir, this is how we do things out here. If you don't like it, nobody's forcing you to stay here."

I realized there was no convincing them...I almost said something really stupid but thought, no, they already know that I am a cop, don't need that getting back to my PD. So I just said what I always say, "Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it."

And yes, I was wearing socks, would have been totally weird otherwise...

Some years ago I was up hunting near Weston pass with a couple of friends, both about 20 years older than me. We were open carrying our revolvers (our hunting sidearms) just as we usually did when hunting, or just up in the mountains. We stopped to help a couple who had slid into a ditch with their Toyota pickup. They were a little different, but nice enough, and very talkative and friendly all through our pulling them out of the ditch, right up until they happened to notice our sidearms. I saw her notice, and then freak out as calmly as she could, and point out my Ruger to her boyfriend/husband/whatever. They suddenly acted like we were escaped felons and about to do them in, and couldn't leave fast enough. As we drove down the road if my truck got within 500 yards they'd goose it and shoot off down the road. I'm sure they had quite the story about the gun totin' loonies that tried to off them in the mountains. Never mind that if we hadn't pulled them out, they would probably have been up where they were for the better part of the (very snowy and cold) day, if not longer.

It's amazing how the simple presence of a weapon suddenly changes you from a helpful, friendly person into a bloodthirsty lunatic for some people. [Rant2]

You have to remember most people are ignorant when it comes to Guns, I am from California and I thought it was the coolest thing when I went to buy a gun and got it the same day instead of a 2 week waiting period, it is very hard to get a gun in California unless you are a bad guy and get one off the street, so that is why people from California are the way they are about guns and it is not all of them just the people that dont know how things work. I also thought it was incredible that you could open carry in Colorado, so you just got to realize that most people are just ignorant when it comes to guns and there is no explaining it. I was in a gas station the other day and I had a 1911 on my side and a lady started freaking out when she seen my gun, she backed up and started telling the clerk oh my gosh he has a gun, I tried to explain to her I was going to go shoot but she just wanted to get out of the store, the interesting thing was she had a bumper sticker that said Colorado Native and another one that said no vacancies. So I guess there are just people everywere that are ignorant about firearms. I used to live in Idaho and there is no problem carrying your gun in the town of Naples.

This is where I get the mixed feelings on OC. While it is within our right to carry OC in most places in Colorado and believe me I am all for preserving our rights I personally feel a little discretion goes a long way.
As I stated in a different thread on the subject the majority of people I have witnessed OC'ing are knuckleheads in the way they do it. Exaggerated body movements and ensuring that EVERYBODY sees you are carrying just makes the party carrying appear like a tool.
Parties openly carrying firearms in public that flaunt the fact and are douchebags supreme do our 2A rights no justice.
All it takes is a few soccer moms and libs whining to city council and more anti 2A ordinances will be on the books.
In Kevins case where he is out ridin the range I would have tried to educate the ignorant Massachusetts transplant. The fact that the transplants know he is LE just speaks to their ignorance.
The other case where a board member was helping some stuck pilgrims the reaction of the pilgrims was predictable and not surprising.

Our beloved state has become a liberal bastion of the transplants.
No easy answer on getting them to see the light.

See, I have a problem here.
I do not believe the fact that Kev is a Law enforcement officer has any relevance in the matter at all.

He could be a puppy poop cleaner or flip burgers at McDonald's and he has the same right to open carry and SHOULD be equally protected.

As far as the douche bags that abuse and flaunt the open carry thing, I agree that its doing us no favors, but that's a maturity issue and should be addressed case by case.

I have open carried and I don't make an issue of it... I don't honestly believe anyone has ever noticed my M9 in a Kydex paddle at 3 to 4 o'clock...
I usually open carry if I am working in the yard and just need to run to the store or HD etc.. just easier to pop in the paddle holster...

I cannot agree more that what one does for a living is irrelevant when it comes to ones right to carry.
What I was trying to illustrate is seeing how the Bostonian Boobs were well aware of what KevDen does for a living then the fact that the Bostonian Boobs got their undies(or socks) twisted just further exemplifies their ignorance.

usually open carrying on the trail, hiking or four wheeling. i have had a few strange looks from the obvious boulderites walking along, sometime get a weird look from a client when i pop on the holster when showing large tract of vacant land. when you are walking 80 acre tracts you might as well be in the back country.

It just seems most people ask "Why do you need a gun?" And of course we all know the answers:

1) I can't carry a cop
2) It takes minutes for 911 when seconds count
3) I can't call 911 when I'm dead

etc., etc., etc.

I know that in the liberal havens they condition the sheeple that guns are only used by bad guys and bad hunters.

A good answer, IMHO, is to say it is to shoot rattlesnakes that try to strike the horse,

or, it's to protect against bear attacks. Be careful of the bears.

Turn it back on them to show they are really ignorant.

I am a transplant, not by choice because I was very young when we came here. But my family moved here for what Colorado is and the culture here and left the shitty culture behind because they wanted nothing to do with it.

I just say this...

"When I asked my wifes father for his permission and his blessing to marry his daughter. I made a promise to him to not only care for her emotional needs, her financial needs, and love her the way Christ loved the church. I promised him to protect her. I promised him that I would gladly die if it meant my wife, and his daughters, safety. That is something I take very seriously and I will mean it till the day God takes me off of this earth."

most people just say..."wow...ok. Hope you never need it." It has actually converted 2 people from being very anti gun to being ok with them. I actually took 1 of them shooting one time.

So, question for the LEO's.....are most LEO's aware that it's legal to OC in CO? I'm scared to death to try it because I'd be the poor dumb bastard that runs into the one cop that thinks NOBODY not in a uniform should be allowed to carry.

I mean, I'd like to try OC, but I don't really want to get beaten down, cuffed and stuffed for it. Just because an act is legal doesn't mean you won't run into a cop that will swear it isn't legal and attempt to "put you under control". That's the part that scares me.

I have OCed a lot in this state, Wyoming, Utah, Montana and the Dakotas and have never encountered this. The few encoutners were posative and one was hilarious when the Sheriff showed up because the Dog Catcher(also part of the Sheriff's office) called in that there was people transfereing firearms in cases to a vehicle. The cop said the gal that called in was ignorant and a transplant. He was very professional and knew exactly what we were doing was 100% legal and said he would have a talk with the gal that called in the "incident"

I ran into someone from Long Island NY and they were scared of the bears in Evergreen. They were wondering what they could use for protecting their kids. I suggested since they are from Long Island they could shake their fists in anger or scream f bombs at the bear. But if they think that is as stupid in their minds as it is in mine get a shot gun with slug rounds. That will teach a bear not to attack your children anymore.
They are everywhere. I think a lesson in shooting will be better than arguing with the idiots. But if all else fails strip all your clothes off except your holster and ride away from them on your horse. Saying "Kiss my ass."

Be careful with that. A person who is innocent of any crime can actually be arrested legally. The officer must have probable cause to believe that the arrestee has committed a crime, that's all. It's tough to know what information the cop has when making an arrest. Simply knowing that you are innocent is not enough to justify resisting arrest (at least legally).

I read the cases and I think in the rare case that it describes it will be an affirmative defense to murder and reduce the charges to manslaughter instead.
But cops can get away with anything. You really need to be nice to them or else face the consequences of bullies with a badge.
However, in the rare case of unjustified mass collections of unuseful idiots or undesirables like all of us you better believe the cops are not going to get everyone to cooperate.*

[Stooge]
Catch anything?

On the M3- I used one when we would go ATVing and it worked well. I think it was 30.00 at the surplus store and with it being leather I was able to mold it to my XD Tactical. Very secure and didn't flop around.
Really rode well on the chest.
