I need my site to come up on search engines - how do I go about doing that? I paid GoDaddy a pile, but it still doesn't work well.
Any help would really be appreciated. :)

You can submit a site to google. go to the add your URL section
http://www.google.com/submityourcontent/index.html
Also, in your website, do you have META data setup? It's a pretty simple HTML "tag" that you add to your site

I am in the same boat Internet. I have asked my web gal about "search engine optimization" where through keywords it brings your site up closer to the top. I don't understand it, she might as well be speaking Japanese.
I do know its not cheap.
I would talk to your web designer.

I would be interested in learning how to increase traffic also. What is "Meta data" and how/where do you set this up.
One thing I do have which is pretty dang cool is Google analytics

I'm learning all this fun stuff too... only I get a pretty hefty budget for it.
There are two types of search results on google.
Paid and 'organic'.
Paid - well you 'bid' on keywords/phrases and you PAY google for a listing, which makes organic searches pretty much irrelevant..
Organic searches, like WAAAAYYY back in the day before 'search engines' were billion dollar companies (paid searches) were just that.. relevant based on information contained in the page.
Now organic searches drive from a LOT of things. Content.. GOOGLE loves content.. videos.. pictures.. links from other sites.. remember Google data mines the SHIT out of what people are doing through their services... it's how you see ads in your gmail, and likewise on facebook how ads appear on the side banners.
A sure fire way to drive an organic search, it isn't free but is SEO (search engine optimization) which I know nothing about.. sorry guys.. but I do know that content.. drives organic searches and google loves it.
Videos on youtube w/ a link to your site... driving traffic from youtube to your site..
If you want to go the 'paid' route which is a quick fix till SEO can be done.. content built up, and organic search becomes a reality..but it's not free.. adwords.google.com. They're actually really easy to set up, and depending on what you're selling/doing can be cheap..google has a lot of information and walk throughs on setting it up. They want your money so they'll teach you how to spend it...
Each search engine has their own 'adwords'.. bing, yahoo, MSN, all those.. I'd suggest to stick w/ one of them.. and google has the larger market share.. so it's more expensive.
If you don't know what you're doing or don't want to risk it, I can suggest to just read all you can w/ the information provided by google. I got to learn using someone elses money :) I've gotten a LOT better... but again.. it's trial and error and not my money i'm spending.
Hire someone.. (not me, I was just handed a project). There are companies out there who can do it.. a few I have worked with are Customer Paradigm, and Webolutions.. We worked with them for a while but we found a relatively cheap, new company that's a small shop out of Dallas who did what they wanted for 1/8th of the cost... I can get you that info, they do good work, and they're cheap since they're small and starting to build a base.. but unless you're a web designer you're looking $5-8k for a good website..
If you want to know more I can show you our sites that we had built from the Dallas company... I can even help you with adwords, and I won't charge..but understand I just 'play' with it..it's not my job, and it's not really what I get paid to do.. but I can help... just don't yell at me for wasting your money :)

I'm on the phone right now, So it's hard to explain all of it. I do this stuff on a daily basis. Internet monies FTW. :)
Basically. Great content + quality backlinks = page 1 google.
There is a little more to it, but I'll have to get on a pc to really dig into it.
What websites are you guys trying to rank and for which keywords?
Is it the sites in your sig?
One last thing for tonight. Do you have a google places page? That will help you a lot with local searches. Also, make sure all your clients leave a review on the google places thing and watch your rankings climb. ;)

Don't have that, but I have a lot of nice hand written notes. :(

Good SEO is mucho hard work and money. If you want to rank as high as a really good site does, you need to spend a lot of time changing up your site and keeping your metadata fresh.
One criteria of SEO is having FRESH content, so start blogging on your site, then linking your blogs to other blog sites and so on. Basically, SEO can be darn near a full time job if you do it right.

This. And then go to as many sites you can that are "good" sites and get a link there. If you have a brick and motor storefront and are not using google business listing (free) you are wrong. The more reviews you get on that the higher you rank for internet searches.
Yes. :)

I have to run to work. but I checked out your website, and dude.... we have to do something about that. Fear not tho, if you follow my advice you can have an awesome website rockin in no time.
I would recommend you start getting familiar with www.wordpress.com blogs.

Ours sux as well maybe a few tips.
I've been busy the last couple days. I'll try to get back to you guys tonight. one easy way to get quality backlinks is to google "your industry" + blog, read their blog post and then leave an insightful comment, and make sure where it asks you for a website, you put your website link in that field.
My g/f buys advertising on the internet, to the tune of a million dollars last year... not her money, of course.
This explains sitemaps, which are important for the spiders, especially if your site is complex

Make sure all the <img> tags have alt="Description of whatever is in that image" on them.
If sp1tty doesn't answer the rest of your questions I can ask her and see what she recommends. It does come down to "organic" fixes and hope they work, or pay for traffic. If you can target what you're selling well enough, you can make paying for traffic work for you. In order to do it, you have to have some means of knowing when a user is profitable for you. For example, you can put a piece of code from google on your signup confirmation page.

Good suggestions here. One small thing tho, After looking at the sites mentioned, paying for traffic may not be the best bet, it would be fairly hard (imo) to convert visitors into paying customers. But who knows, I've been wrong before.

First thing first. I checked and it doesnt look like you have a google places/business page. Get one immediately.
go to https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none
type in keywords you want to target and do some research. get back to me with your keywords and we can proceed. dont want to give you too many steps.

It's hard to say indeed. Being able to put a metric on your users so you can tell if the advertising is profitable or not has to be the first step. Otherwise you're potentially throwing away money.
If you have an online shopping cart and can put the tracking pixel on the "purchase confirmation" page, you're in good shape. In a worst case scenario, say you ask people to contact you via a contact request form to ask about your service, you could put the tracker on the page that comes up after they submit the form.
Then at least you could tell if the keywords/sites that run your ad are generating leads for you.
