So my grandfather has a bunch of handguns that he's not equipped to handle anymore, and my family would like them passed along to me here in Colorado. Trouble is, he lives in New York state. Trying to figure out the handgun laws in NY makes my brain hurt.

Does anyone have any clue how I'd go about this from a legal perspective, and how these firearms would need to be shipped?

Thanks for your help.

Take the guns to an FFL in NY, and have them shipped to you here?

Take some time off, drive to NY and pick them up. Drive home again. 4 to 5 day trip over a weekend, able to see the family again. Make sure your car or truck is up to date on reg and fully functional. Store the guns properly for travel. That is how I brought home my father's guns from CA.

ask your local FFL if he'll cut you a deal on the cost of transferring "X" amount of guns.

Have an FFL in NY send them to the FFL here, pay your guy fill out a ouple papers and say thank you.

Driving out and back is risky (you don't want to get pulled over in NY or NJ without a permit. and It wouldn't save you any money

figure 120 gallons of gas = $420, and 4 hotel nights =$375 . Thats almost $800 to get them yourself

The other option you have is to overnight them to yourself. Fly out, pack up, ship next day and be there to sign when they arrive the next day

Thanks everyone. I spoke to an ffl in new york. It looks pretty strait forward to get stuff out of ny, its having them come in when it gets really hairy.[Beer]

Why, a transfer is a simple, painless routine (for some of us) adventure. You could always drive out there, i'd share driving time if needed.

I think he means into NY, not into CO. Into CO is easy, into NY is a giant pain in the ass.

never had a problem dealing with transfer to ny, including pre 94 firearms. I've even transfered "permitted" firearms to CA. which is a real PITA.
