View Full Version : Best selection of military style rifles in Denver?
OK. I want to go somewhere tomorrow where I can look at/handle several different types of military style rifles. Which local shop would have the best selection for me to check out? Would like to lay hands on some nicer AK's, maybe a Galil (or Golani?), one of the HK93 copies (V93, C93), an MSAR, or other type rifles.
Thanks.

5280 Armory or Machinegun tours would be my vote!!?? [Tooth]

MGT or Jensen Arms in Loveland would be my picks.
Also check out Bowers Tactical, near the Tech Center, for accessories.
5280's owner has customer service problems.
I didn't even think of Machine Gun Tours. Seems like I glanced at a couple of their prices once a while back and just didn't give their inventory much notice after that. And the last time I was in Jensens was on a weekend and you couldn't even get near the gun counter. Might have to check one of those places out after work tomorrow.

I have never had any issue beyond going to the bank during my BGC to get the cash for the cash discount.
other than that Matt and Gina have treated us well.
The Firing Line in Aurora actually has a pretty decent collection of EBRs on the shelf. All the big AR manufacturers, an ACR and a SCAR 16S, as well as M1As, FALs and other .308 weapons.
Help me save my googling skills.... where is 5280?

Having been to there house I would tend to agree. now.

Speak or link to the review. NOT PLAYING. I know some have had less than A++ service from some of the employees at the shows and at the shop. Out with it or I shitcan it. ;)
I'd go to MGT, Firing Line or Jensen's. Sometimes Green Mountain has a good variety too. Gun Sport in Boulder has some ARs and couple of others.

I think that so long as you understand a few Basics, you will appreciate the business model at 5280
1) it's not a charge for using a card... its a cash discount price. Visa charges them, why should they have to cut into their costs for it?
2) I Concur with their decision only to sell to U.S. CITIZENS. dont like it... go elsewhere... more and more "Greencards" are coming up fake/stolen. this cuts allot of concerns.
3) Return Policy: really? They will allow you to try on anything in the store...
to include Holsters. Matt Personally assisted me in trying out Holsters for fit on my 1911 for IWB. When I hear people slamming him I have to wonder if there isn't "more to the story".

you should at least use the tiny URL option so its not so obvious.
5280 actually does have a C93 at their store. I think they wanted something like $650 for it? I was very tempted...

I looked at one at my least favorite place in the world (Gander Mountain [Rant2]) and they had theirs prices at $999. Might have to pop into 5280 on the way to Machine Gun Tours and check it out. Thanks.
I am indeed shocked and outraged that someone on this site would want to look/handle "military style rifles". What the hell do you want with "military style rifles"? Those things are indeed dangerous and unnecessary in these modern times of crime free cities, police at your beckon call, and politicians who are looking out for your best interests. Shame on you! Plus, you'll shoot your eye out kid!
I wasn't sure what to call them. Couldn't think of the proper, politically correct term. I hate when people call them "assault rifles". I have no plans on assaulting anyone. [Coffee]

Its funny, I have been going there for a few years and yes they get super busy and its funny how folks misintrepet the so called customer services skills as shitty when its just a busy day and they get some stupid damn questions all day. When we (the informed on just about every damn firearm) ask them in a situation like that, they can tell by our question that we know a thing or 2 about firearms and answer accordingly. Since we as gun owners can be very sensative at times definatly misintrepet this.
I have never had an issue with them and understood when Matt was short, but that Saturday at 1pm was slammed with folks in the old store (much smaller for those that dont know) and didnt take it personally. He actually apologized to me a week later when I went in to buy some ammo.
I have had more issues with MGT and Jensens and they can, well you all should know the answer to this. They wont ever see my business.
This was customer service when I was getting back into firearms. They flat were rude and condescending. Also i dont enjoy the "one" company continually bashing their local competiton all the time when it isnt necessary.

Well you know why they call it Gander Mountain, dontcha?
You take a Gander at what you are interested in, then buy it anywhere else for half as much! [ROFL1]

Well, if you can resurrect the thread, it *was* here: http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?p=167276
Reader's Digest version:
I went to 5280 to buy a Romanian AK. I'd rather support a local business if I can, if they can get their price reasonably close to what I'd pay online.
They're maybe $40-50 more. I ask Matt if he can add an extra mag, to make his price more comparable to online pricing. Just a question. He gets visibly upset, tells me that he doesn't feel he should let me see the gun anymore, forcibly grabs the gun from my hands, and proceeds to lecture me for probably ten or fifteen minutes, all the while voice quivering and choking up with anger about his batshit theory of how FFL transfers work (apparently, FFLs are "abusing" the "privilege" their license gives them, by doing transfers), the state of the American economy, and what's wrong with this country in general.
If I wasn't so amused by the sheer insanity of the situation, I'd have been upset. The guy has some major, major, major issues, and, in my view, is the very caricature of a gun store owner. I don't know - maybe he had a bad day, but taking it out on customers is business insanity. I've steered all my friends away since then.
Everyone else at the shop is fantastic (Gina, especially), but he's nuts, the prices are too high, and they charge for credit cards.
FWIW, I did end up buying the AK, but not for his "service".
I'm not the only one with a negative experience, either.
Check the store hours if you go to 5280 Armory. They aren't open usual business hours.
I've almost written them off. They seemed like nice people but they were closed 4 of the 6 times I drove up there. It's kinda discouraging.

They are open now Wed through Sunday. It used to be wierd because he ran his own HVAC or plumbing company during the week. Their store hours have been reasonable for over 1.5 years now.

They aren't open mornings. The last time I was by there they were closed for inventory. I didn't say they unreasonable, just unusual. I'm not saying don't go there, just check their website or call before you make the trip. I may go up this week or maybe next but I will call first. Both times I got in I bought something and if I go again I will likely buy again.

Both Jensen's and 5280 both post pretty much their entire inventory online through gunbroker. It's a great place to browse before you head out that way anyway.

and they charge for credit cards.
OK... once again for the cheap seats.
The price advertised is the cash discount price.
its not that you are paying "extra" for credit cards... its that you are not receiving the cash discount price they are advertising.
all CC Companies charge the Merchant, they are trying to pass on a savings to the customers that use cash.
Other merchants simply flat charge everyone the extra 6-8% cash or credit.

Look, I work in greasy finance. I understand and play the game, and I know that some people do intellectually view it in an honest way when they price it out like that. But ultimately, whatever your view, 1+2=3 and 2+1=3, and you're gonna pay more if you use a credit card at 5280.
The problem with the assertion that they're simply not charging the credit card fee to everyone is that their prices are high across the board. I mean, seriously, have you ever looked at ammo in there? Jesus.
It's not like cash payers are getting a discount not otherwise afforded to them in other shops; they're just getting gouged less than people using credit cards.
That can make or break sales - call it what you like. With some other "features" of the shop, I'm betting on the "break" side.

If you compare the internet prices from AIM Surplus with the amount of shipping they charge, its maybe $5-$10 more at 5280.

Not just ammo. I called 5280 about a rifle I want to buy. $20 over MSRP (well, that was "cash discount" price). Asked Jensen's...$40 over MSRP. [ROFL2]
Green Mountain was asking a reasonable, competitive price. If I can make it there before they close tomorrow I'll be buying it. I've never been there before, but I'm sold.
Guns Sport CO does a lot of used/trade ins. They are more of a hunting store but do have a selection of military rifles. They also have the largest south paw (relatively speaking) selection I've found. Rod is good people. Been going there since it was Big Horn.
Jensen Arms would be my first choice for anything military.
Grandpa's Pawn Shop has a selection of mil. rifles. If your heading to Loveland, it's a stop in Longmont.
Has Bowers started selling firearms? I know they were going to.
Personally, I won't got back to 5280 Armory. After being totally ignored, when it was obvious I was looking to buy, I left and marked them off my list. The "gentleman" behind the counter was too busy talking with his bud to provide any customer service.
The above goes for the Gun Room also. Went there twice and ignored both times.

I was in 5280 a few weeks ago. I saw some galil style rifles up on the wall and they have a ton of different AK style rifles. Don't recall seeing any G3 or 91 type rifles.
They haven't given me the time of day both times I was in there. Probably because I'm a younger person with long hair... I'll be the first to admit that I don't look like someone who has the cash to be looking at $1000 optics and what not though. I asked if they had any ACOG's with BDC for .308 (they were all sitting on the tags and I don't know enough to tell just by looking at them through the case). Guy behind the counter replied "probably" and walked off. Can't say I'll go back unless I really get the urge to waste some money on something I want immediately.

I also had a problem at 5280 Armory but I think it was also partly me causing the problem. I was so upset, that I ended up not buying the handgun that I wanted. I bought it a month or so later at a new store in Loveland instead.
I would still go to 5280 Armory as I am very forgiving and also take part of the blame.
