View Full Version : The "Hopefully" last update for the for sale section.

From this point forward, anyone registered before 09-19-2011 must have at least 15 posts to post in the "Trading Post" section. Anyone registering after that date must get past their "First 30 day Probationary User" status and have 50 posts. Also, everyone must read and acknowledge the rules (located here... http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33477 ) BEFORE posting in the Trading Post section.

The decision to do this was made in hopes of ending the last few problems that we seemed to have in there. Like those that can't read or abide by the rules of that forum.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. The quick solution is to go post in other areas until you have 15-50 post. Yes, we do have other areas.

Fully support this. With an amendment: obvious attempts to get to 15 posts just to post in the classifieds should be looked at with scrutiny. Can we make them quality posts? Sick of seeing people bump every thread in the Welcome forum with "Hi".

First, I have never sold anything here. I have bought some things from some folks. I had a fair amount of post in the firearms for sale section. lots of nice gun bumps and comments, compliments and such. Recently someone decided post in the for sale section don't count. Life Member of NRA and longtime member of RMGO, guess I start posting.

What will count as a "good post"? That could be the only problem, its different to everyone.

As the Zen master says, "we'll see".

Oh, I don't mind that so much, as long as they post and contribute a little.

Honestly, had I know about both of them years ago, I would have done it then.

Sir, you mistake this for a democracy. It is not. This forum is privately operated, and the owners/moderators make the rules. They allow for an amazing diversity of opinions, only stepping in when issues arise that infringe on the smooth functioning of the forum. I applaud this move, as it SHOULD encourage more active participation in areas other than the trading post, while weeding out the folks that join only to hawk their wares. If you are unhappy with the rules, feel free to ask for a full refund of the monies you paid to join...[Tooth]

Don't like it,,,, Leave.. Simple enough.

Just let me know so I can delete the account.

I am getting so 'effing fed up with the comparison of this site to socialism here recently.

A few simple rules most of which have been in place since the site started. And a few just to make it a little easier to do a transaction And all of a sudden we are the worst of socialism, communism, and whatever other "ism" there is..

Well, just do me the favor of not coming back. Obviously, we just can't meet your high moral standard.

Graves
09-20-2011, 17:48
Newbs are one thing, dumb newbs are another and boy have we had a taste of the latter recently so a few new rules to keep them in line doesn't bug me one bit. As its been said several times in the past, this forum owes you (or any of us) nothing so complaining about it might not work out so well for ya.

Marlin
09-20-2011, 18:14
That's fine with me, have your opinion, you are entitled.

But, as stated, if we just don't measure up to your standards, and the few rules that we do have are just to restrictive for you.. See ya.

Frankly, I could care less if you have your location or not, just don't post in the trading post without it. That one little bit of "guidance", has saved me a lot of headaches.

spleify
09-20-2011, 18:52
I’m trying to post my opinion that the rules are getting too restrictive.
• Must post your location
• Must post a price
• Must post in this thread that you acknowledged the rules

RULES: Must Read, and acknowledge BEFORE posting (you can find the link)

Dude, if this is to many "rules" to follow then I feel sorry for you.

With out rules there's chaos and you all know that. There are very few rules here and they are not that big of a deal. And us "cronies", you know the moderators, actually do like reading the forums and participating in threads and conversing with the other members but when we log on and have to filter through all the garbage in the trading post and all the cry baby posts it gets old and then no one can enjoy the site.

Marlin
09-20-2011, 19:10
Those have been around since day one. They are a 7IDL creation. They were here when you signed up. If you felt that was too many, Why'd you sign up then?

And, no where in your post did I read that it was satire.

Maybe my funny bone is broken tonight, but, I must have completely missed that one..

spleify
09-20-2011, 19:37
My apologies again.. And especially to the MOD. You do a good job. It's just frustrating when we have to abide to so many rules and then get chastised if we miss or forget something.

Never once has anyone ever been "chastised" for not following a rule, and this conversation with you is really starting to piss me off, for a couple of reasons.

One, like I mentioned no one has ever been "chastised" for not following a rule. The moderators go out of our way to very politely send a PM to the member letting them know what they have/have not done and if they would please comply.

Number two, you are compliant in all ways so why in the hell are you bothering to waste our time with this BS, who are you trying to impress and defend?? Move on and drop it.

These are the rules and like Marlin said if you dont like it no one is forcing you to stay, and it costs just as much to get out as it cost to get in.

Marlin
09-20-2011, 20:00
Oh, I'll lay it plain and simple, If the people who post in there, and I don't mean all of them, just the few rotten apples that ruined it for everybody, could do it with a little maturity, there wouldn't be the need for the rules being enforced.

Let's face it you weren't the one getting 35-50 PM's a DAY, from someone complaining about someone else in the trading post.

Seriously, had it been up to me at the time, I would have deleted the entire section. Yes, it was that bad. after the crack down, everybody seem happy. And I'm not getting the PM's everyday.

And, I will admit maybe the funny bone was out of kilter today, and I may have missed the "satire" but, satire is a reflection of how you feel.

As stated before, don't like it, don't come back.

My two cents:
rant on

Look, I don't like having a lot of rules either and I cringe every time we have to create/apply another one. No one wants this site to become another ARFCOM.

When I became a mod last year I was able to go in an clean up the few issues and then get into the rest of the site and enjoy it.

Around last December we started to see 2 things happening here on the site and by the end of January of this year things were reaching a critical peak - at least for the Mods/Admins of the site. First, we started seeing an explosion of new members. Secondly, we started seeing more and more problems in the Trading Post forums requiring Moderator intervention. Most of these issues were identified by louder and louder complaints from our membership. One might think that the first thing is completely responsible for the second but in reality the new members were just part of the problem. By this point I noticed that all of the free time I had to enjoy the site was used up playing moderator - I couldn't enjoy the site. By initiating the requirements for everyone to have their location in their profile and anyone creating a post in the Trading Post forums to read & ack the site rules, the burden on the moderator staff droppped significantly.

However, once again the problems started to grow. We added to our moderator staff to help alleviate the workload. With the great choices made in this staff it made an impact - for a while.

By June I was totally burned out and took about a 10 day hiatus from the site. The constant moderation demands had taken a toll. When I returned I was refreshed and ready to resume my role. NOT ONE of the mod/admin staff gets anything for our efforts except the joy of keeping this the best stop on the Information Superhighway. It is a labor of love. Even still, the only times this summer I was able to peek out of the Trading Post to participate in the rest of the site were days I had to put aside being a moderator and just enjoy the site as a member - leaving the burden to administer the site to the rest of the team. I'm an assigned moderator on many forums outside of the Trading Post and have been having to ignore those forums because there just isn't time to see to them.

Now, we've just added to our mod staff again with more awesome assets but unless we implemented some additional rules it just wouldn't be enough. As of noon today we had 5194 members here. We've got a mod/admin team of less than 10 active members who manage:

Between 39 and 75 new threads daily
Between 450 and 939 new posts daily
Between 583 and 691 members visiting daily
As few as 1 and as many as 10 new member registrations/day
Sometimes as many as 5 spam members/day which we have to root out and often remove their spam posts

This information is based off of site statistics for the past month alone - sometimes these numbers SURGE!

Don't the mods/admins deserve to enjoy this site like the rest of the members and not just spend all of their time administering it? Without adding a couple more rules to our minimal site rules/requirements it just wouldn't be possible. While we are grateful for everyones appreciation of our efforts, we could sure use your help in following the rules and alerting us to issues early on and your understanding as well.

This new rule threw me for a loop too. I wasn't able to view some of the pics in the For Sale Forum that i had previously been able to look at. I'm sure some of you can relate when you see a gorgeous "anything" you have to go back and look at it over and over, even if you can't have it ;) Occasionally i'll get that way with a woman, cars, fine firearms... not so often with art. Now I'm just some sort of gray haired old noob again. So, off to post some randomness here and then some other randomness there, maybe try out a few shiny new smilies, until I get to the new magic number...

Yes, I too didn't post much if at all for almost a year now it seems. Most of my issue with posting on just about anything it seems you will offend someone somehow :)

Also, nobody seems to ask the questions that I can answer without a doubt and without a slim percentage of a chance of being proven wrong :) So instead of resembling a sales person at Radio Shack (which are taught to tell the customer something even if you don't know it will work) I tend to reserve my answers for just the right time. Well, it's easier to describe what isn't meaningful...

One word posts (especially when you string several of them together to get a sentence out) - not meaningful. Okay, sometimes a one word response can be meaningful, but it's the exception to the norm.

Simple statements like: "It's cold out, brr." - Not so much either.

Applying a little common sense will get you in the arena. Is there value added to the thread (that's always iffy" in threads like the Genreal Discussion forum "Boost Your Post Count", but you get what I'm getting at here.).

I have been lurking and learning for a while, bought some stuff from the for sale section, but generally haven't had anything to add to most of the discussions ( see lurking and learning above). Today I wanted to post something in the "Wanted" section but ran into the post limit. I read through all 8 pages of this thread and didn't see t mentioned, so I thought it might be worthwhile to suggest that removing the limit from the wanted would be a good idea if the forum software allows it.

At least this adds 1 to my post count.

Thank for hosting such an informational and well run forum.
