As some of you know Im in the oilfield and on a rig right now. I have also posted this on another site.
This night sucks even worse then I could think.
Im on a drilling rig in the middle of nowhere (nearest town is 40 miles on dirt road and population of 300) and
we had an accident.
We were tripping pipe and one of the roughnecks (floorhand his first hitch out here) got hit or pinned or both by the
tongs that are basically huge pipe wrenches.
They just took him off by flight for life. He gave me a thumbs up as they took him on a stretcher down from
the rig floor. He looks ok considering but could just be the morphine or whatever they gave him to help him out.
Had a flex cast on his arm and wraps around his chest and ribs. I couldnt tell if any injuries to his legs or head.
He is married and I dont know if he has any kids, but his Brother in Law is a floorhand with him. Id appreciate
if ya'll could throw some prayers to him and his family.
As for the driller, he is pretty shaken up and blaming himself as anyone would be that was running the break handle.
He probably could use some prayers, because that is part of his "Family" out here.
Appreciate it CO-AR15.
UPDATE #1- Flight for Life called the Company Man and told them he did great on the ride and is waiting for Xrays. Sounds optpmistic to me.
UPDATE #2- He is doing good. Suffered only a broken left arm and bruised chest and ribs. He is back out here. Not working of course but back from the hospital none the less.
I appreciate all the prayers and thoughts and good fortune his way. He is a good kid, hard worker and give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Probably why I am kinda torn up overe him getting hurt.

Prayers will be sent.
I hope they can fix him up enough so that he'll be able to work and provide for his family again, and that the driller can find whatever he needs to help him deal with it.
Got a buddy working the fields in North Dakota, shit can be rough at times.

When He gave me the thumbs up, gave me hope that he will be fixed up and nothing too major is wrong with him.
I have worked a lot in N. Dakota and it defiantly is pretty rough up there. I dont miss ND at all

Got it!
Wow, god bless and they will be in our prayers. Hope all is well.
Good luck
God Bless Him and everyone out there!
I will pray for him as well, I know how it is I was on with Ensign until I got rearended by a drunk driver. I will never step foot on a Rig again and I loved every minute of being a Roughneck. I hope he is okay and can return to work.

Sorry to hear that, and prayers are in mind. My dad worked in the oil fields for a long time, there were many accidents. This is how I got my middle name Derrick (i.e. Oil Derrick). Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Keeping him in my thoughts.
I worked as a floorhand for a brief time in the late 70's, I still can't believe how damn dangerous that job is. Glad to hear he's going to be OK.
<edit> Actually, I still can't believe my weenie ass survived that job, with all parts intact!

Any update DD? That is why I always liked working Derricks. Have to have your head on a swivel on the floor.
Hope he is doing okay.
Do you know any details on the accident? Were they using both set of tongs? Pipe spinners probably too. Were you in casing or open hole? Just curious if maybe they were using the table back out and the tongs bit and slammed into him. Or the tongs released breaking a tight connection, in which case he should ha6ve been in the doghouse. Kind of sounds like Drill hit the wrong lever. Lots of stuff can go wrong in a hurry. Let me know the details when you get them. I assume he was working worm's corner.

2nd update in the OP.
Sorry for taking forever. Satalite has been out since I got up today.
As far as the accident, we were in open hole only about 7 stands out from 8200'. They were trying to spin out of the stand with the top drive and had the stand on the rig floor mat and set the tongs in a fucked up position and also the tong dies were worn out. When the Driller put torque on the pipe the tongues spun CCW and then CW and then slammed the Floorhand right into the drillers consloe and shoved the console onto the break handle. Pretty fucked up and the Driller took full responsibility and is still pretty torn up over hurting the Kid.
Just glad he wasnt killed. The pictures I saw while finally picking up our motor and bottom hole assemble, were bad and could have easily crushed him to death or crushed his head and killed him, so very greatful for that.
That's great news! Glad to hear it.

Good to hear he wasn't seriously hurt! Tell him to enjoy light duty! You should should teach the kid to run tools while he is on light duty.
The accident doesn't make any sense. If they were tooh why wasn't the stand in the elevators? Why set the stand on the mat to break instead of in the box? Why do you need tongs on the stand at all? Something is missing here. You know me, I always need the details.
