I searched and didn't find a thread, so thought I'd start one.

Any recommendations for books to read? I'm getting down to 2 books left and will need to be on the hunt for a few new ones.

I first read Lights Out while it was out in PDF form. I recently bought it via Kindle and have read it once again. All of these books I'd recommend.

Here's my list :

Lights Out by David Crawford
One Second After by William R. Forstchen
Deep Winter by Thomas Sherry
Shatter (Deep Winter 2nd book) by Thomas Sherry
Remnant (Deep Winter 3rd book) by Thomas Sherry
Patriots : Surviving the coming collapse by James Wesley Rawles

Enemies Foreign and Domestic (and the other two in the trilogy, Domestic enemies and Foreign Enemies)
WarDay

One of the best, albeit a bit dated.

Some good books here, But if you could add the Author that would help. Some of the titles are generic and many authors come up

I'm currently listening to Patriots for the second time. I'm also taking notes of the info I found interesting the first time through it and also writing down all the books mentioned. I might miss a few, but, "Oh well..." when the list is done, ill type it up and post it.

Hey SMiTTY

That is a most excellent list. Jut finished OSA and Lights Out in that order. I talked my wife into reading OSA and now she wants more! Have not read the second two in the Deep Winter trilogy, how do they compare to the first?

I'm advised by Amazon that the new novel, Survivors; A Novel of the Coming Collapse by James Wesley Rawles is coming out soon.

Thanks Wulf202, I though that might be the case but based on the description I am not sure this time.....

Product Description

WHAT IF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT ENDED TOMORROW? The America we are accustomed to is no more. Practically overnight the stock market has plummeted, hyperinflation has crippled commerce, and the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure have fallen. The power grids are down. Brutal rioting and looting grip every major city. The volatile era known as “the Crunch” has begun, and this new period in our history will leave no one untouched. In this unfamiliar environment, only a handful of individuals are equipped to survive.
Andrew Laine, a resourceful young U.S. Army officer stationed overseas in Afghanistan, wants nothing more than to return home to Bloomfield, New Mexico. With the world in turmoil and all air and sea traffic to America suspended, Laine must rely on his own ingenuity and the help of good Samaritans to reach his family. Andrew will do whatever it takes to make it home to his fiancée, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
Major Ian Doyle is a U.S. Air Force pilot sta-tioned in Arizona with his wife, Blanca. Their young daughter, Linda, is trapped in the North- eastern riots. Three teenage orphans, Shadrach, Reuben, and Matthew Phelps, have no choice but to set out on their own when their orphanage closes at the beginning of the Crunch. Then there is Ignacio Garcia, the ruthless leader of the criminal gang called La Fuerza, who will stop at nothing to amass an army capable of razing the countryside. And over everything looms the threat of a provisional government, determined to take over America and destroy the freedoms upon which it was built. The world of Survivors is a terrifyingly familiar one. Rawles has written a novel so close to the truth, readers will forget it’s fiction. If everything you thought you knew suddenly fell apart, would you survive?

Not the case here - this is a story in the same overall scenario, but with different characters. IIRC, at least some of them appear in or are referred to in Patriots though.

The Jakarta Pandemic by Steven Konkoly

This one has me thinking more than One Second After and The Road

"In the late fall of 2013, a lethal pandemic virus emerges from the Islamic Republic of Indonesia and rages unchecked across every continent. When the Jakarta Flu threatens his picture perfect Maine neighborhood, Alex Fletcher, Iraq War veteran, is ready to do whatever it takes to keep his family safe. As a seasoned sales representative for Biosphere Pharmaceuticals, makers of a leading flu virus treatment, Alex understands what a deadly pandemic means for all of them. He particularly knows that strict isolation is the only guaranteed way to protect his family from the new disease.

With his family and home prepared for an extended period of seclusion, Alex has few real concerns about the growing pandemic. But as the deadliest pandemic in human history ravages northern New England, and starts to unravel the fabric of their Maine neighborhood, he starts to realize that the flu itself is the least of his problems. A mounting scarcity of food and critical supplies turns most of the neighbors against him, and Alex is forced to confront their unexpected hostility before it goes too far. Just when he thinks it can’t get any worse, the very face of human evil arrives on Durham Rd. and threatens to destroy them all. Alex and his few remaining friends band together to protect the neighborhood from a threat far deadlier than the flu, as they edge closer to the inevitable confrontation that will test the limits of their humanity."

I can lend this as a Kindle title I think. PM me if interested...

So much knowledge can be had on the web, so if I had to narrow it to 3 reference type books...hmmm....
*Definitely a local lore book, plants and such.
The one I have is Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Rockies by Linda Kershaw. There very well could be better but... Good to now what to stay away from and what is safe to wipe your ass with. *Absolutely, a military survival guide. I don't know which branches is the most comprehensive, but i have the Army guide, it has a ton of good information.
James Wesley, Rawles' book How to Survive the End of the World as we Know It is a good read to get your wheels turning and start the process. Most of the information can be retained, not quite reference material. Maybe a good modern primitive medical book, we are a medical family so that is not a priority for us. The Foxfire books are a fun read but not so much guide. They are an old three book series (I think) that chronicle some old hillbilly ways, skinning squirrel, moon shining and such, great stuff. Not to many comprehensive books that cover everything, just have to pick your topics. I also like the old Nuclear War Survival Skills by Cresson h. Kearney
Oh and maybe a Bible

I just bought this one. I like it so far. I like the pics inside (instead of just descriptions of the plants) and if it is food, medicine, or can be used for other uses. The cover of it is pretty durable

Another one I like that I just bought is
Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family 2nd Edition - Arthur T. Bradley, Ph.D. This one is good.

One of the books everyone should have is the Army Survival book. Buy the pocket version and keep it in your bag. You never know when you might need it but it is small enough to keep in your bag and will be there as a good reference just in case.

1. Army Survival Manual.
2. Fry the Brain by John West (more of a study really, but the info gained could come in handy in certain situations that could be called "SHTF"). I have a PDF copy of this one.
3. The Modern Hunter-Gatherer by Tony Nester.

I tried reading E, F&Domestic 2 x. Plodded through maybe 1/4 of it then let it lay. Tried again but no way, While the premises is realistic the players were not. That fed guy sucked as a villain , reminded me of a kid i use to go to school with, major fail
Maybe a good read for others, me not so much.
