View Full Version : CSP is EVERYWHERE!
So the last two days driving home (I-70 from Evergreen Parkway to 6th Ave) I've seen a large number of CSP running a massive traffic operation between Genessee Park and Morrison exits, and then either Lakewood, Golden or Jeffco sitting in the median running traffic right around the exit to C-470. Then this morning driving up the hill to work I saw 4 CSP in the East bound lanes all at/near the Morrison exit.
Are they revving up operations on I-70 for some reason? I've never seen them doing this much in such a small area. I haven't got a clue what's going on here... does anyone know?
I saw a bunch this morning just after the I176, !36, I25 & 270 exchange heading west. Btw I love how even if the LEO is on the oppisite side of the street we all have to hit our brakes...

Great! [roll1]
As if traffic wasn't jacked up enough on EB I-70 coming from the mountains, I don't think speed is the problem, I think it's the asshats that brake and cause the ripple effect that jams up the interstate...
Has anyone been caught in ski traffic lately? You really think a CSP is going to fix it? Especially since the pace car only goes 45-55MPH when the speed limit is 65!
Need CSP up north between Crossroads and Highway 34, between 6-7 am. If you do any less then 80, you WILL get your ass run over. Fuck!ng

I had not been "up north" in a while and I was a bit taken aback!
I went up I25 to Windsor on Tuesday. From the 270 Diagonal On Ramp all the way up to the Windsor Exit, they were EVERYWHERE. Marked, Unmarked, Cars & Bikes.
On the way up... from the 270 Diagonal to Windsor... and this was in Rush Hour between 1715 & 1800 hours... there was not one moment when the CSP was not visible from my Land Yacht!!!
On the way back they disappeared around 120th only to manifest as a VASCAR Trap at the 84th Ave On Ramp! 4 Bikes perched & ready to pounce!
Think maybe they were trying to make a "statement"?[Dunno]

I have to agree with you on this one Ronin. It is the typical Subaru driving ass clown who thinks the left lane is for going as slow as you want.
This isn't Germany where the Polizie routinely do this to slow down traffic. This is I-70, aka parking lot in the mountains. Perhaps they should do what they do here in the Springs which is waste money on under cover operations trying to arrest waitresses who serve alochol to minors and "visibly" drunk patrons. Talk about a waste....

I'm glad they're out there. Got to witness sweet justice for the first time in a long time this weekend. I was driving home from drill in Aurora back to the Springs when three rice burners from a riding club started weaving between cars on I25 just south of Castle Rock.
Saw them again at the Larkspur exit pulled over by CSP. [PoPo]

I've encountered a lot of police activity on NB I-25 too. I usually travel between 84th and 120th, and go to Longmont twice a week. Tuesday evening's trip to Longmont was littered with patrol all over the hwy. I saw at least 10 cars during that trip.
I think one of the issues here is limits. Technically speaking- and this is the model, not what is in use, as is very clear here in Colorado- speed limits are supposed to be set to a reasonable speed. I remember when they first changed the limit on I-70 between Genessee Park and C-470 from 65 to 55. Granted there were accidents a lot, and problems with people speeding with so many truckers needing to go slow down the hill (6% grade for miles if you haven't taken the drive yet). But the main issue is that in a lot of places the limit is almost too low, and it does provide a nice income racket for the state/county/city, but reasonable? Some areas I think no. One area I'd like to see a little raise in the limit would be I-70 between DIA and Lakewood where it dips from 65 to 55. I have a problem on I-70 daily coming down (as the WB lanes are 65 all the way up) after work and I try to pass someone doing 50 in the 55 zone- middle lane- and I get over doing 60 or so and have some cretin ride my ass and get all pissed that I got into his lane to pass someone going slower. I don't want this to turn into another fight about left lane, right lane, you're holding up traffic or in an emergency I'll bump you and kill you if you impede my trying to save my dying Labrador argument. I'm just saying I don't want to get creamed by some asshat in his lifted Titan because I'm passing 1 freaking car.

I figured it was Revenue Day on Tuesday when I saw them all. Now I guess it's more like Revenue Week.
Obey the laws of the road in the first place and the Law Enforcement officers really would just be "Peace Officers". People need to get back to common sense and common courtesy.
Just yesterday I saw someone brake check a car behind them. The car behind them swerved and almost caused a third handicap plate driver to run off the road. Both the
other cars were oblivious to it. Both cars took off flipping each other off and speeding away.
If you're the only car in the left hand lane and someone is driving 30 over the speed limit, go ahead and get in the other lane (besides being the law) you might one day save their life (or yours) by getting out of the way instead of making them move and oversteering/losing control/tire blowout/etc. I've seen (and been involved in) some nasty crashes. And yes, I'll admit, I test the limits of my car every now and then, but I know there are some CRAZY drivers out there.
Y'all quit bitching and be careful.
I drive now almost an hour and a half one way to work and see probably 5 or 6 CSP's along the way. Only gotten pulled over once and it wasn't because of my driving (no visible front license plate).
Most people don't get tickets unless they are 15 mph or more, over the limit. Everyone screaming revenue needs to get a clue.
In most agencies around here, including mine, fines from traffic fines go into a GENERAL REVENUE fund which pays for everything but police stuff. Schools, streets, etc.
I guess it's cooler to whine about the MAN though. :)

First off. Traffic tickets are for much more than money coming in. All of the money that comes in from traffic tickets goes out in state income tax. Not only that but a large number of criminals get taken off the street due to traffic violations. My brother in law just nailed a guy for a busted head light and found out he had $56,000 in cash, and pounds of drugs. A large portion of warrants, uninsured drivers, and drivers without licenses are found. There are a lot of things that come out of traffic stops.

Nose is a little clogged, but I think I smell contradiction here... If there is someone going 5-10 UNDER the speed limit in the middle lane (and usually truckers and other very slow moving vehicles in the right lane) I'll get left to pass when safe- sorry to the asshole behind me doing 30 over... by the way, if you're doing 30+ and there is traffic (I won't get into 3AM and no traffic because I've done that and don't want to be a hypocrite) you WILL KILL SOMEONE SOMEDAY! And you should probably slow the fuck down!

Sorry, I'm not a fucking county accountant... I have no idea where my money from tickets goes, and frankly I don't care. Maybe where you are people don't get tickets unless they're 15+ over, but in Jeffco the usual norm is 10+ warrants a stop at least. Morrison, it's 1+ over the limit and every time is a ticket (IME).

Not being in the business, I can understand your misconception.
It's not about revenue. It's about (for me) catching bad guys.
I haven't written a speeding ticket since 2004.
The only tickets I ever write for traffic are accident related, no insurance tickets, and safety stuff, like reckless driving/road rage type stuff, failing to keep right, MOVE OVER violations, and tailgaters.
I don't have a quota, or a supervisor up my arse to write a pile of tickets. They just want us out there doing our jobs. That can be anything, from taking calls to citizen contacts, to traffic enforcement, to looking for stolen cars, etc.
Our traffic unit, motorcycles and dedicated car guys, are not revenue generators.
They respond to complaints from citizens (YOU FOLKS). They do speed surveys, and go to problem areas. They have a matrix up on their wall and their supervisor sends them to where folks want them. That's it. That, and major accidents with serious injuries or fatals.
We don't see any of our money from traffic tickets.
It's cool to hear peoples imaginations get the best of them, though. [ROFL2]

Sry Ronin, where's the contradiction? My scenario is what I see daily. Two lane like my portion of I-25. Car in left lane doing limit, but no other cars around, another speeding car comes roaring up in left lane. It wouldn't hurt the first car to move over and let the speeder by.
I understand you scenario but I don't think we are on the same page. You stated a different scenario...

No I was talking about your "Obey the laws" comment followed by the 30+ over... but I know that's not you. Sry for the confusion, yes when I'm all alone on a highway I stay right, so many don't do this and at times I think if I got on CSP I'd be making our highways safer one traffic stop at a time.

Two of our motor folks are the biggest hunters of bad guys on day shift. They find habitual traffic offenders, stolen cars, stolen guns, etc. all day. They work in teams (backup) and call a transport van out to take the BG to jail.
They hand out tickets for all kinds of stuff, not just speeding.

+1! I agree- I hate cops that are out there just to "catch bad guys" who commit almost no crime at all- like when I was in my buddies truck and we got pulled over for "distracting devices hanging from rear view mirror." If I was CSP I'd be cruising the left lane and not even pull people over for slowing down traffic, I'd just hit the lights and escort them to the right lane and move on (Much like that badass youtube vid someone posted a while back).

I got pulled over last week on I-25 at 58th 72mph in a 55 (and not wearing a seatbelt). CSP that pulled me over was actually a pretty good guy....very professional
Nobody likes to get a ticket....Nobody! I look at it this way, I drive about 50,000 miles a year, most of those are spent above the posted limit. If I get caught every few years I figure I'm still ahead.
What I do have issue with is a $72.00 ticket for not wearing my seatbelt. $72.00 seems excessive to me

So, we've heard a little in this thread about why the CSP and otehr agencies might have such a higher than normal ops tempo.
In anotehr thread we also heard it might have something to do with the Operation Mountain Guardian Emergency Exercise (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46591).
I've seen this sort of activity a few times before and I'm guessing it has a LOT more to do with the POTUS coming to town (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46551) than with anything else.

I had a less than friendly encounter with them once, and I couldn't help from laughing the entire time at how funny the situation must have looked.
It depends upon the circumstances of how the officers are being used. Everyday patrol answering calls, not so great. Specific enforcement, much more effective. Ever see Las Vegas Metro on the bikes on the strip? They can get through all the traffic and people faster than a patrol vehicle.
Years ago, I did the bike thing during concerts. I was able to move through all the parking lots quickly and quietly to catch people doing wrong, breaking into vehicles, alcohol issues, etc.

OK, I have to catch up.
I remember when they first changed the limit on I-70 between Genessee Park and C-470 from 65 to 55.
Arizona Highway patrol actually recorded an INCREASE in accidents when the Feds pushed them to drop the limit to 55 on the interstates. I-10 runs through there and is a major cross country route...with drivers spending LOTS of time driving. Drop the speed to 55, takes folks longer to get to their destinations = folks drive longer hours, get fatigued and have accidents. After the limit increased again the accident dropped. Go figure.
Two of our motor folks are the biggest hunters of bad guys on day shift. They find habitual traffic offenders, stolen cars, stolen guns, etc. all day. They work in teams (backup) and call a transport van out to take the BG to jail.
Cochese, glad you called out that BS post about motorcycle officers not having the capability to make arrests. Someone else gets to transport the kicking, spitting, screaming BG so it's even easier for the motorcycle officers. As my retired LEO Dad would put it, "They only have to do the fun part."
Funny that Delfuego thinks he can't be arrested by motorcycle officer...hope that doesn't come back to bite him.
the only problem I have with More CSP on the highways is the dumb-fucks that jump on the brakes when they see a CSP even if we are already doing 70 in a 75...
^ Agreed 1000%.

Didn't you ever see Pacific Blue (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112112/)? [ROFL2]

I was a bicycle officer for about 5 years. Easy to sneak up up on badguys. Easier to get around in traffic. Easier to move around apartment complexes, business districts, parking lots.
I got a lot done on a bike.
