anyone have any experience with the bighorn, alaknak, or similar? they supposedly can withstand lots of rain, snow and wind, and you can use a wood burning stove in them making them a decent consideration for a shtf shelter in the mountains. look big and spacious as well. any insight is appreciated.

I can't say from ownership but they seem really decent. They always have them out at the store and during the winter more often than not they take a lot of abuse from the weather out here in Sidney. When I've gone in them during these periods they always seem dry and the sun keeps them warm.

I've got a 12' x 12' Alaknak. Purchased a few years back in Sidney. I've had it out in the snow, rain and high wind - zero signs of tearing or leaking. Ventilation is great. If you get one get the floor liner and if you run a stove think about the roof liner. Mine has a stove vent hole and floor zip out for stove but I have never used it. I even got a small stove for it when I bought it (still in the box) - some rebate thing if memory serves. They 12x is easily a one man operation to set up - done it many times getting in late to camp. It is not the smallest tent packed up but it packs down into one large long bag about 40lbs and then the pole bag at maybe 30lbs.

had a alaknac for a few years spend 4 weeks a year in it. Great tent. I have carpet in mine. Look at nuway propane heaters, no sparks or soot to mess with. There large 26000 heater works well.

the only issue there is it doesn't help much in survival situations because if you run out of propane you are boned. but a good idea nonetheless
