Co-witness preferences

I have an eotech xps 2-2 that is absolute co-witnessed with my flip up front and rear BUIS. I kinda like my current setup but I've never tried the lower 1/3 co-witness.

How do you guys have your dot optics set up? I'm thinking about doing the larue lt-110. No plans for a magnifier yet though. I like that I could quickly remove the sight for storage without loss of zero on return. Would I have a major difference in POA/POI if I switched it between to rifles? (14.5 middy/16 carbine).

Lower 1/3. There is NO benefit with absolute co-witness.

Get a LaRue mount. Theyre the best and you will be glad you did.

I run currently on my M4, a Comp M3 with Larue, soon to be cantilever mount, I run a magnifier sometimes.

The SBR sports a M68CCO with the M68 mount (which is co-witness).

I hate it. I like the low profile, but my thumb blocks half of my FOV.

Go with lower 1/3

I used to own an Eotech xps. I liked it, I like Aimpoint better.

Had problems with it returning to zero after I took it off and on. I beat the shit out of that optic.

On my M4gery, I have an Aimpoint CompM2 in a QRP mount with spacer. That gives me a lower 1/3 cowitness with my MBUS sights, and suits me just fine. And I've had no issues with the Aimpoint mount holding zero. Hell, I take it off to clean the rifle.

If you go Larue, you will need to spend for a Larue mount with a magnifier as well. They are much higher than the Aimpoint factory mounts with spacer that is "proper" 39mm center of optic for Aimpoints on a flat top. Without spacer is only intended for shotgun mounts, maybe carry handle mounts (not sure there). It's not even absolute co-witness on a flat top and is too low. I'm not knocking them by any means, I just haven't drunk the Larue Kool-Aid.

I'm very happy with my all Aimpoint setup but had to go to the cantilever mount for the M2 to allow the 3X room to twist off. I was not really interested in a flip down mount for the 3x. Got a smokin deal on a barely used LRP cantilever setup for the M2 and couldn't be happier.

In my opinion, absolute co-witness with a magnifier puts too much ghost image in the view with an FSB, 1/3 lower is a win all around. You can still "lollipop" the red dot to a well zeroed iron sight to get on paper and tweak from there. I'm dialed in for 50Y/200Y and GTG.

I started to put this together during my frustration with the lack of detailed spec info from the mount vendors. This was pre-cantilever setup.

Note that without spacer, the optic is 5mm lower than iron sights. With spacer it's 4mm higher. Everything excepting the Larue shown was measured with a caliper.

I prefer lower 1/3 also, less cluttered field of view

I run absolute on my ar optics, but only because they have folding iron sights. I like it for consistent cheek weld. If an optic ever went out, or if I was using another ar without an optic, it would be a quick no-brainer perfect sight picture. OR - if you were ever curious about your zero, say after dropping your weapon, you could check it against the irons. IMHO
