Want to convert AR15 to 762x39. How do I do it? Who has the parts? Has anyone done this and can talk about it. I like the ergonomics of the AR and the availability and cost of the 762x39 ammo and want both in one package.
Been reading a little at this site: http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=528046
I would rather have a local help me out.

i had a dpms 7.62 and it was a peice of shit i could never get it to run right i had ftf double feeds and fte and it wouldnt do anything with russian ammo and i tryed to fix it 6 ways to tuesday, heavy buffer, gas tube, bolt and carier group, fireing pins, extensive cleaning, ect, ect, ect. My advice buy a ak47 if you want to shoot 7.62x39 its a much better gun
You don't need a whole new upper. All you need is a barrel, a bolt, and a magazine. Done.

Negative, if you go the barrel and bolt route, you also need an upper receiver vise block and an armorer's wrench, and some copper-moly anti-seize for the reassembly, and a roll pin punch to remove and reinstall the gas tube to swap the barrels out.

Sorry. I forget not everyone is equipped to work on their own stuff. But, technically speaking, the only difference between a 5.56 AR and one in 7.62x39 is the barrel, the bolt, and the magazine. Just saying. [Beer]

If a cheaper ammo option is wanted why not cinsider a 5.45 ar, once again..... Bolt barrel and magazine, also there are complete uppers around and the reason you might like this better is that 5.45x39 is even cheaper than 7.62x39

I've been looking into an upper as well. Look at Model 1 sales and J&S Gun Parts for in stock uppers. I keep waiting for JSE to get some back in stock since they've been good to me. Main reason for me going 7.62x39 is to keep the number of different calibers down. I like having lots of ammo sitting around.

Thanks for the help folks. I would probably get Bert at BT to do the assembly. I was hopping to find a quality barrel and other parts. Does any one know a source? Also, does anyone have first hand knowledge of how the build functions, reliability etc.?

My step father has a Colt in 7.62x39 that he bought in the early 90's and it is one of his favorites of the many AR's he owns. It has been 100% reliable with everything he has put through it. Quality magazines make them reliable.

Update to those that are thinking about doing this. It seems that quality mags are near impossible to get therefore making all the other work worthless. This really bums me out because the only other way to get the ballistics I'm looking for is to go with the 6.8 spc, but the cost per round sucks. Hopefully one day someone will figure out there is a market for this.

you can get 15 7.62 x 39 rounds in a 20 rd AR mag and function. I had an oly com bloc conversion years ago and used the ar mags loaded approx 1/2- 2/3 . YMMV
Also able to use AR mags loaded with 5.45 x 39 2/3 loaded.
I would go the 5.45 x 39 route on an upper.
Not to stray too far off subject, but I am in the middle of putting together a 300 AAC Blackout. For those wanting a 30 Cal. AR this might be something to look into. Only thing needed to convert over is a barrel.
