NYPD Chief: Police Could Take Down Plane if Needed (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/09/25/nypd-chief-police-could-take-down-plane-if-needed/?test=latestnews)
Kelly didn't divulge details but said "obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."
Now city leadership is capable of making a decision to shoot down (or otherwise bring down) an airliner. If you were unhappy about police powers before, you should be on the verge of a meltdown now.
Rumor has it that the projectile is shaped like a toilet plunger; probably won't miss their mark.
Can they control where the "take down" airplane debris lands?
"Other measures include sending NYPD officers abroad" So New York City has international and interstate jurisdiction now?

I saw this last night. I hope a lot more people are concerned about this.

All this from the department that required 12 pound trigger pulls on their Glocks because they refused to train their personnel properly. Awesome.

It seemed like a lot of the stuff they did were over their heads. I am all for an anti terrorism team but in my opinion thats the US armed Forces, not NYPD.

It raises massive red flags.. holy shit. A CIVILIAN police force sending officers abroad, and claiming to be able to 'take down' a plane. What'd they do.. buy some of the Russian AA that went missing in Libya?
God let's hope it never comes to them deciding to use it.

Well I figure everyone else is buying them up why can't NYPD or you or I buy them, right?

Maybe their actual ability to take down a plane is a direct phone line to a nearby USAF Fighter Squadron that is always on standby
I'm all for an anti-terror initiative with LE, but let's not overstep our bounds shall we?

They were talking about barret 50 cal rifle loaded on helicopter that can take down a small plane with "the force of a bazooka"
I hope they launch Bloomberg at the plane. Funny he's not against his own arsenal just law abiding people.

That would only work if it was sold in NJ or CA.

"I want to see a private security force, as well funded and equipped as the military"
For some reason that sentence sticks in my brain.

I think they are referring to storming a plane and taking control... not shooting one down.

This Ray Kelly clown should be fired for dropping such an irresponsible and tactically unfounded statement.
A 9mm slug in the right place could take down a commercial airliner...
Of course, your chances of being struck by a meteor while holding 2 winning Powerball tickets are better...

Maybe this is actually some initiative to take down rogue RC planes that have been terrorizing the runners in Central Park.
Silly New Yorkers!

Not if you read the context of the article. He's referring to "a very extreme situation".
I don't think that's what he means at all. Here's additional from CNN:
New York (CNN) -- The New York Police Department has the capability to "take down" threatening airplanes, Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in an interview broadcast on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday night.
Asked by interviewer Scott Pelley whether he is satisfied with the handling of potential aerial threats, Kelly responded, "It's something that's on our radar screen. In an extreme situation, we would have some means to take down a plane."
"Do you mean to say that the NYPD has the means to take down an aircraft?" Pelley asked.
"Yes," Kelly answered. "I prefer not to get into the details, but obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."
"You have the equipment and the training?"
"Yes."
There was no comment on the technology that would be used in such a situation.
He's talking about "threatening airplanes". Not people on the ground with hostages. I'm assuming NYPD has had the capability of storming a plane on the ground for decades. Obviously this is not what he's referring to.

ohh,
"NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly revealed over the weekend that the department had developed the capability to take down a plane, and law enforcement sources tell NBC New York that this would be done by rifle from a helicopter.
NYPD helicopters are operated by a pilot and co-pilot. In an emergency, a third member can be on board with a .50-caliber rifle. The weapon, which would be attached to a sling with a side door open on the chopper, could be used to disable a boat on the water or a small aircraft."

They might be better off with a stinger missle on the ground or atop a building. Good luck shooting down plane with a .50 cal . Maybe they will have Sara Brady in the gunner's seat. She seems to think it can be done.
Bunch of friggin morons-The only thing they can successfuly take down is a glazed dougnut!!!

How much of a lead would you need to give to hit the plane? [LOL]
I think they are referring to storming a plane and taking control... not shooting one down.
Not likely. Since they'd have to start the operation while the plane was still in Ohio in order to board by New York.
They should just stop dicking around and ban air travel in New York city limits.

actually, NYPD does pretty good against bicyclists.

they have a .50 rifle and a chief that has seen too many movies.

Depends if they have the exploding home defense rounds...;)
That video of the NYPD officer hitting that guy is awesome. sorry but it made me laugh. I hate bicycle riders who scream share the road and then break every road law there is.
joe
There is mush to the story that is unknown. But, tis obvious that, judging by their approach to the guy, that they wanted him for some reason. They walked directly to him.
He shouldn't have resisted arrest.
