Iran planning to send ships near U.S. waters

Haven't really decided if this is anything to worry about, as many countries send their Navy ships out to patrol. But trusting Iran's motives...meh....not so much.
Note to self: go buy more ammo

Fun but true: My ship got rammed by the Iranian gun boat 'Bayandor' on a Gulf cruise in the late 90s. Wanted to get between us and the carrier, but we wouldn't let them. Instead, they got closer and closer to us, then made a hard turn to port. Some of our flight deck netting got ripped off, and it punched a hole in the side of their superstructure. But of course, we couldn't have an 'international incident', so our betters decided to let it go. We got about 30 seconds of coverage on CNN and that was it.
The irony is that we sold the Shah the frigate that the Ayatollah rammed us with. Good times. Anyways, from what I've seen of the Iranian Navy, I'm not too worried. I'd be curious to see if they could even make it across the Atlantic.
I'm pretty sure our Coast Guard could handle their navy without breaking a sweat.

Gotta love them Canucks eh. Anybody that brought the world hockey is ok with me[Tooth]
That being said why is the Iranian puddle patrol even an issue? This administration is why.
With any other administration this would have never even been considered because they would have gotten "persuaded" the second they left their territorial waters.
But now that we have a pussy in chief that has made it clear that we are to be an inferior world power this is what we get.
Not overly concerning but this should have never even been a legitimate question or concern.

Yes "persuaded." I'm pretty easily persuaded when I have no less than 10 large caliber ship-to-ship guns and countless ship-to-ship missiles pointed at me. Of course, the JOTUS would never think to actually bring his full naval arsenal to bear on a potential threat.

It's just bluster and BS. They had a hard enough time getting to Syria, let alone crossing the Med, and then the Atlantic. They don't have the logistical capabilities or the balls to pull it off. It's one thing to have shit break in the Gulf of Oman - very different in the middle of the Atlantic.

I think it's a game that Iran should be very careful about. It's all fun and games until a sub sinks your crappy middle-eastern ship.

So, what is their reasoning?

I don't see this as a threat against the US. I do see this as a problem within the US... this would not be happening with any other president (except for maybe Carter). The Iranians aren't complete idiots, they know that there's still a rifle behind every blade of grass in America... they fear the American people. They do not, however, fear the current administration, and aren't afraid to show this disrespect because they know our gov't won't do anything.
Now that said, if the Iranians are lucky, they'll make it about halfway before they run out of fuel... AFAIK, they don't have the capability to replenish/refuel while underway.
This is nothing more than a propaganda maneuver. They know that if they actually try anything, we'll put them back to the days before Persia existed. However, by simply sitting 13 miles off the coast (I believe we consider 12 miles of ocean as our sovereign territory right?) they can print headlines for their people that read along the lines of:
INVINCIBLE PERSIAN FLEET SAILS AGAINST DEMANDS OF AMERICAN WARLORD!
It's like talking smack to a gorilla at a zoo. Outside the cage you can say whatever you want.
turnabout is fair play, we should park a carrier group off their waters.

A lot of talk on the radio about how close they are to nukes and have improved their delivery systems. It's not like we have to worry but just think of what Israel and even Europe have to live with. A nut job pointing a loaded gun at you.

I wouldn't worry about Israel. They're not afraid to take an aggressive approach to things like we tend to be.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Israel has some subs of its own... if one of em were to come out here and turn one or a few of the Iranian ships into artificial reefs, Israel would be almost entirely off the radar and would have some plausible deniability being "so far from home" and all.

maybe they're trying some low-level terrorism, getting their ships close enough to say that their missles are now in range of the Eastern seaboard.
not a real threat, but enough to cause unrest in the public?

ah, got it.
I think Byte is the only one who knows this, but it seems like the rest of you might be missing the real threat here. They don't need to try and paddle their dingys over to the Eastern Seaboard, all they have to do is push out a few miles into the Persian Gulf- where we have quite the military contingent force sitting- and start lobbing molotov cocktails (or whatever weapons those camel jockeys use for naval warfare) and we have ourselves an international incident...
Course you know lazy J Obama won't do diddly about it.

They could pull into port in Kuwait and we have parts of the 5th there too

What's he supposed to do, sink a vessel of a sovereign nation in international waters? Some tool on my facebook suggested that, "and sinking the life boats too".
It's sabre rattling, anyone who cares is obviously not paying attention.

you're missing my point- that's only and international incident if they do anything... the military isn't going to be intimidated by their mere presence...
put yourself in the shoes of the average sheep- it's fine for the military to put their lives on the line, they signed up for that- but if they could hurt ME, in Manhattan... holy crap!!!
I'm not talking about where they actually launch anything- are they hoping to scare the sheep in the "on wolf, sheep and sheepdogs" that's what I mean by "low-level terrorism". Just trying to scare sheep with their presence?

Of course not... that's what the motor's for. You run it while firing to counter the recoil.
The boat itself is pedal powered like those little boats at Wash Park.
