So I was just talking with my wife and she was commenting on how they have to show the speech today in school. I asked if it was 100% mandatory and she said yes it was. I asked about Bush and former Presidents like Clinton? Nope... Apparently the Obama administration made is mandatory that all of his speeches are played in schools. Did I forget about something or how is this the first time I am hearing about this?
All Hail Glorious Leader.

When did Dear Leader appoint Goebbels to head up the Ministry of Truth?

Yep when they are education related.

The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks today at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue.

What really pisses the wife off, is the speech is mandatory and is shown on cable. The school has no cable, so they have to tape it then play it for the school. If you are gonna force them to do it at least make it convenient.

Hmm, why doesn't one of the highly paid teachers union officials contribute cable for your kid's school? It'd be for the children after all.
my kid's teacher sent an email last week that they would not be watching it.
I thought I saved the email so I could post it so I'll paraphrase
" because of the amount and nature of material we will be covering this week in class, we will not be watching the Presidential address. Please tape the address from home and discuss with you child" thank you

While I know you have a certain stance on unions, her union is one you might consider a "decent" one. Completely optional, $25 a month, they actually use the money for the schools, if you don't want your money used for political contributions they will send you a refund.
When a 6th grader had his pants to low and my wife told him she could see his underwear and he needed to fix it and he said she "sexually harassed" him. The union was there to back her up in a instant.
Its along the same lines as politicians, most suck, some are okay.
Yeah, unfortunatley, the TV in my room is "broken", and we have a concert to prepare for.. Oh well. They can watch it at home after we play the Theme song to the "A-Team". HA.
I also sent a letter home informing parents they can watch it some other time. Class time is for class materials, not indoctrination of policies outside the realm of music.
the best part is the assume that everyone still has a vcr and the time to tape said speech .

Well put! And I love the A-Team theme!
I would just hop on the interwebz and burn a DVD of a bunch of really great speeches- from Truman to Reagan to 'ol Dubya- and play that for the children. Of course if I was a teacher (which I'm getting my cert in secondary ed) I'd be a history teacher, and focusing on the present is not my #1 priority. Unless of course I include the correlation that people like Carter and our current prez are the reason America seems to be hurting right now.
My kids won't hear it. Private school.
