View Full Version : Lower blood pressure overnight?

My buddy scored a little high on his BP at work today and stands to have his medical deductible increased...alot. They said they would retest him tomorrow, he was over by only one point but workin' for the "Man" sometimes doesn't afford you a personal exception when you are close.[Rant1]

Anybody know of an overnight solution to help him out?

There isn't a solution that works overnight. Best thing to do is relax, deep slow breaths, happy thoughts, and all that sh*t while testing. This miiiight help a little if he's only a few digits over the 120/80 mark.

I should add - even if he gets on bp meds, a good diet and exercise plan, it'll be a while before he sees any real changes.

Bananas can lower your bp. Have him eat one an hour or so before the test.

May try hibiscus. Its a vaso dilator that you can buy in stores. No promises but it may help, it shows some rigjt now reaction, may try it then head to a walgreens or firehouse to test it

lots of celery too. There's something in it that reduces inflammation in blood vessels

An aspirin probably can't hurt either.

Have him also drink lots of water to hydrate before testing. Helps lower pressure a few points, especially if he hasn't been keeping up on staying hydrated before the first test.

Make sure he doesn't drink any coffee before the test. I've been able to lower mine quite a bit by focusing on slowing my heart down when it's being taken. I'm sure the stress induced by having his back against the wall won't help. Good luck to him.

I can picture it now, walking into the Dr.'s office for a BP test with a tent pole in his pants...
Make sure to tell him to remind the nurse that the BP cuff goes on the upper arm, and not around the third leg. [ROFL1][ROFL1][ROFL1]

HaHa, yes he already told me his concern of the possible awkwardness. [LOL]

If after taking the viagra the BP doesn't go down after 4 hours he should consult a physician.[Coffee]

Don't eat anything and drink nothing but water the morning before the test. It won't drastically change anything but it helped me get under the mark.

I think I'm a little late, but avoid any type of stimulants. It would be good to flush out the salt, but that won't be happening overnight. If he took a diuretic and tried to dehydrate himself it would lower his blood pressure, but would raise his heart rate and I would guess some other red flags, not to mention that it would be very poor for his health.

From a practical aspect, tell him to think of pleasing thoughts. Maybe find some kind of mint or something to use as a sugar pill. Tell him its a fast acting blood pressure med that a friend of a friend got from mexico or something. The affect the mind has on the body is amazing and if you really work it in and he believes it, it could have a positive psychosomatic result.

Drink lots and lots of water. Just before and while taking the test, tell him to do 4 count ("tactical") breathing... inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds, exhale through mouth for 4 seconds, hold empty 4 seconds, repeat. 3-5 cycles (depending on his body and if he's done those before) of that should lower his heart rate and thus his blood pressure enough to pass it he was only one point off.

A buddy of mine with high BP problems got in the Army by taking Aspirin. Unfortunately he was retested after basic and was kicked out.

Tell him to stay away from caffine especially before the test. I had my DOT physical and my blood pressure was high low and behold the doc tells me it was he pepsi I drank right before I walked in. Kicked that shit to the curb after that.

He passed. Yesterday was a 115/85 and today 122/78. He asked if there was a problem with the systolic being over 120 (their standard). They said no, as long as his diastolic was under 80 (their standard). Told me he just tried to chill, had some chamomile tea and some aspirin. He decided not to use the Viagra recommendation.[Coffee]
I said he missed by one point i guess it was a couple more than that. (thought i would point that out before someone else did)
