i just got my paperwork back today approving my build 10" AR (pics to follow soon) my question is do i have to engrave my info on the gun? if so what info, how big, and where? also who can do this for me? im supprised it doesn't have the requirements on the form. if i wouldn't have heard rumors of it i wouldn't have even known to get it done.

You are supposed to have it engraved. The legal requirements are that the letters must be at lest 1/16 of an inch tall and at least .005 inches deep. The best place I have seen it done on an AR is next to the trigger slot in the bottom of the receiver. You need your name, city, and state.

NFA violations can go from 6 months in club fed and $250K fines up to 10 years and $1M in fines IIRC. And as a federal violation, no more toys when you get out. But hey, it's your time and money. [roll] Karl.

There is an excellent engraver in Pueblo. Larry Ashcraft. I might have an email for him somewhere...

I posted this on another thread, but is is more appropriate here:

Some folks here have commented about using a Form 1 to "make" a short rifle or shotgun. Many folks may not be aware that there is another option that does not involve placing your name and city, state info on the gun.
You can send the gun off to any licensed Class 2 manufacturer (like Vector Arms in Utah, etc.) who can "make" it into a Title 2 configuration tax free on their license using a Form 2. In some cases, this is as simple as putting a stock on your AK or Uzi pistol, etc. They mark it with their name according to law which is generally better if you resell the gun down the line because your name is not on it, theirs is. If they made the Title 1 gun to start with, then their markings are already on the gun.
They can then transfer it back to you directly across state lines on a tax-paid and approved Form 4 even though you do not have a FFL. The ATF allows you to bypass the usual transfer dealer in this case because you owned the original gun to start with. You must provide a note to that effect and include it with the form 4. I would also include any proof you have of original ownership. This shortcut doesn't save you on transfer taxes (unless the item is made into an AOW), but it will save time and transfer dealer fees. Vector is probably even cheaper than paying a local trophy shop to do the engraving.

Well I was wrong:
Orion-Arms just f**ked up my SBR lower, so I take back everything I said about them. Ryan is not to be trusted. Of the 2 lowers I have sent them to get engraved, both of them were chipped during the engraving That is unacceptable. Do not under any circumstances send anything to Orion Arms to be engraved. Incompetence is the name of the game at their company.
