This probably needs to go to the politics thread but more people will see it here: Comments made this morning by Hank Williams Jr about Obama:

My co worker went to see him and Sara Palin at Sky Sox stadium before the election and said he was just great. He change the lyrics to one of his songs and was funny as heck. This will cost him some $$$$$

I was going to say about the same thing as Ridge. He has the right to express his opinion. ESPN has the right to terminate his services. As long as it's not the government doing it, I see nothing wrong with what happened here.

Sorta like many of US boycotting the Dixie Chicks for the stupid things they said (but I sure do like their voices...)

Actually, I look at it for photography tips.

Elhuero, maybe you should start the NAAWP; then you can defend Hank, Jr. yourself.

Good luck with that, by the way.

The First Amendment (in fact the entire Constitution) is designed to protect us from the government. It says NOTHING about limiting speech in the workplace.

Ridge is spot on.

Notice that neither Ridge nor I stated that we agree with what ESPN did. Speaking for myself, though, I agree with ESPN's right to do this.

It's all smoke and mirrors. Who gets offended and who gets to cry.

Wasn't Bush Jr. compared to Hitler yet ... what? nothing. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,107426,00.html

I'm called a racist because I don't agree with the current President. Ok, what does that make everyone who didn't agree with the previous occupants of the White House? Does that same "logic" mean that everyone who isn't a white male and was opposed to previous Presidents a racist?

To some people it's logical, to others it is the opportunity to cry foul, cry unfair and sue.

not to go on to far a tangent but... according to copy right laws and the announcement at the start of all the games on TV a person is in violation of the NFL's copy right when they discuss the game with anyone else.

I stopped watching MNF when they moved it to ESPN. This is just another nail in the coffin for the NFL as far as I'm concerned.

I would have a lot more respect for ESPN if they stated that Hank Williams Jr. was not on company time and has the freedom of speech to say whatever he likes while he is representing himself. And then did not pull the commercial.

Just because you have the freedom to say whatever you want doesn't mean that you won't suffer repercussions from what you say.

Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. You cannot seperate the two.

Hank can say whatever he wants, and if his employer, in this case ESPN, thinks it casts the company in a bad light, they should be able to fire or suspend him.

You can be upset with the situation, but I don't see it as a 1A issue.

... and in MY opinion, we have to get back to respecting private property laws. Tweety Bird and Ridge are right. This is an inherently non-governmental situation and I DO believe ESPN has the right to fire anyone that they think makes the company look bad. I wish Disney (mother company of ABC and ESPN) took the same steps to fire homosexual and anti-American activists on their payroll.

We the public don't have to eat ESPN's crap though -- feel free to write or call them and their advertisers explaining why you won't watch them or buy their product anymore. THAT's the kind of language (if done by enough people) that sinks into corporate skulls.

ESPN can fire Hank, Jr. for whatever reason they want.

We can fire ESPN (I did it years ago).

that could happen at our own jobs too. not really much of a surprise there; same thing as when the gunny did that about Obama. if you're a public figure and you say something like that, you have to expect repercussions.

As for the Hitler thing: i'm so tired of hearing people say that... Comparing anyone to Hitler is ridiculous, unless they killed an assload of people and wanted to take over the world. A more accurate description of Obama: shitty president in an even shittier economy.

The funny thing is I was just thinking on Sunday night (you know.. during Sunday Night football? The one that opens with the SCHMOKIN' hot Faith Hill) that it's time to get something fresh in there for the opener for MNF. I like repetition as much as the next guy but to be honest I didn't like the Hank Williams Jr selection when they made it. Granted I was a LOT younger at the time but now that I'm older I still think they could do better and feel as though they may have been thinking the same thing and were waiting for a slip up like this.

Remember: behind everyone who gets shit canned for a stupid reason is an employer who was looking for a reason to shit can them for some time.

http://www.hankjr.com/home/196--a-statement-from-hank-williams-jr

“Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme – but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me - how ludicrous that pairing was. They’re polar opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the President.”

“Every time the media brings up the tea party it’s painted as racist and extremists – but there’s never a backlash – no outrage to those comparisons… Working class people are hurting – and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares. When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job – it makes a whole lot of us angry. Something has to change. The policies have to change.” – Hank Williams, Jr.
