The WHAC .22LR Steel Dogs Match will take place every third Saturday of the month (weather permitting) at 9:00am at the Wildlife Hunters Association of Colorado Shooting Range (http://www.wildlifehunters.com/location.htm) located near Brighton, CO.

We will be engaging ten steel prairie dog target measuring approximately 6” high by 2.5” wide at distance ranging from 35 yards to 150 yards and we will have four separate strings of fire. On all four strings the shooters will begin the course of fire in their desired shooting position (from the bench or prone) with their rifle loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds and the rifle's action closed.

We will have two separate divisions: Scoped Rifle (no magnification limit) and Open Sights (post & notch or peep sights).

The cost of this match is only $10 per rifle. You may shoot up to a total of two rifles but one must be scoped and the other an open sights rifle.

______________________________________________
String No. 1: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in ascending order with one round each. The targets will be set at: 35yd (35pt), 50yd (50pts), 65yd (65pts), 80yd (80pts), 90yd (90pts), 100yd (100pts), 110yd (110pts), 120yd (120pts), 135yd (135pts) and 150yd (150pts). You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets. The clock stops when you have fired your 10th shot (fired at the 150yd target). If you hit your intended target, you will get their assigned point value; if you miss it or if you hit a target out of order, you just don't gain any points (no penalty for misses).

String No. 2: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in descending order with one round each. Starting with the 150yd target and ending on the 35yd target. You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets. The clock stops when you have fired your 10th shot.

String No. 3: On signal, you must hit all 10 targets in ascending order. If you hit your intended target with your first shot, you get its full point value. If you don't hit it on your first shot but you hit it on the second shot, you receive 50% of the points. If you don't hit it on the second shot and you hit it on the third shot, you receive 25% of its value. If you don't hit your intended target on your third shot (or if you skip it), you will not receive that target's points value and you must continue shooting the next farthest target. You can bring to the line as many magazines as you deem necessary but each magazine can only be loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds each. You will have a maximum of three minutes for this string of fire.

String No. 4: On signal, you will have one minute to rack up as many points as you can. You can engage the targets in any order you like but you can only engage each target once. If you hit it on your first shot, you get the target's full point value. If you miss it, you must engage a different target. Whether you hit or miss, you cannot engage the same target a second time.

In case of a tie, the shooter with the shortest cumulative time (for all four strings of fire) will get the win.

It's really hard to find an open weekend slot for a shooting event. There are a bunch of really good matches all throughout Colorado.

It was either that or the fifth weekend... [Flower]

Although not exactly as ours, there are quite a few Small Bore Silhouette matches around. Their course of fire and shooting positions are a bit different than our match but they are really fun too and well worth checking them out.

I don't remember what weekend it is that they hold it but there is a Small Bore Silhouette match at the Pikes Peak Range in Pueblo West.

Cy,

what's the course of fire for string 5?

Thanks, Kevin

cysoto
08-12-2012, 18:15
Hey Kevin,

String 5 is the only one that is not timed but it is probably the most challenging one for most of us. Shooters start with a magazine loaded with 10 rounds and they have to engaged a target at 75 yards (which we call "Know Your Limits), 175 yards and 200 yards. The targets at 175 & 200 yards need to be hit only once and you get full-point value (175 pts & 200 pts respectively) once you have hit them.

The target at 75 yards is a 3-part target: One 3" round target, another one that is 2" and a 1" target. If you hit the 3" one you get 25 pts, if you hit the 3" & the 2" consecutively, you get 50 points. If you hit all 3 targets in succession, you get 100 points. If you miss the 2nd or 3rd targets, your points get reset to zero and you have to start fresh (or you can choose to stop at target #1 or #2).

If you shoot this string clean you only need 5 rounds but, since you can make up misses, you have up to 10 rounds to get the maximum point value. Most shooters start by shooting at the 200yd target and, if they haven't hit it with their third shot, they go for the closer ones.

So when did you add the 5th string Cy?
I think it was 3 matches ago. The originally thought of it as a bonus round but everyone liked it so we decided to keep it. The 200yd shot is challenging but, very doable. I have a hard time with it but CStone makes this shot on command (and with open sight nonetheless)!

May I make a request for September? The fan (source of wind) was a bit strong last month. I was grouping a few different .22lr rifles yesterday and someone must have turned the fan all the way up. Very strong gusts. My bullets were fighting a head wind all the way [ROFL1]

I'm thinking about switching to my Marlin 981. How strict will you be on the tube magazine reloading for the one string where we could shoot up to 30 rounds? Every other string being 10 rounds would mean I wouldn't need to reload at all. I can reload the tube safely, and will have some pre-loaded straws to drop rounds in the tube. It just looks odd after watching all of the box magazine fed rifles.

I just thought it would be nice to give something else a try. [Coffee]

cysoto
09-01-2012, 21:36
Are you saying that shooting a .22LR at a plate 200 yards away in 25mph crosswinds is a difficult shot?

Bring that 981 and let's give it a workout. I am sure you will shoot String 3 clean and you won't even need more than 10 rounds but, if you do need a few extra round, no one is going to complain about reloading a tube-magazine.

Nope, no age restrictions. The good thing about this game is that coaching is allowed so dad/mom can be right next to the child making sure that they feel comfortable behind the gun and practicing safe gun-handling skills.

Just yesterday, we had three young female shooters: one 16, another 13 and the youngest 11. All of them are very safe shooters.

Yeah, but the 11" barrel, 4 MOA FastFire, and the 4 pounds...a tad light and the wife kind of wants it for Steel.

Got some VQ parts and a Shilen heavy match barrel on the bench. Just have to get a stock.

That sounds even sexier! I hope you can put it all together soon so you can join us for the November match.

Bring a box. Mine come in a box of 525, but I doubt you shoot more than 70. Unless you are buying Eley or Lapua, cost per round is not really an issue in this match. Cy could probably give you some ideas on where to get Wolf Match which seems to do real well for the people who are competitive [Coffee]

You will need no more than 80 rounds for the match (but, like Chuck said, most people shoot about 70). Also bring however much ammo you think you will need for sighting in. Between the match and sighting in, I usually use about 125 rounds total (per rifle).

And just because I like to see how well those high dollar rifles are shooting; what sort of rifle were you shooting with spongejosh?

I know that it is a bit early to be doing the .22LR Steel Dogs match call but I might not get a chance to send this message out next week.

Unless we get an unprecedented amount of snow this next week, the December .22LR Steel Dogs is a 'go'. It will happen on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 9am.

Sadly, I will not be able to shoot this match with you folks because I will be returning from a short family vacation on that same day. Juan is going to be running this event so, if you have any questions about it, please don't hesitate to email him at: Juan@WildlifeHunters.com ; I too will be checking my emails this week but from the poolside while sipping copious amounts of Pina Coladas so I might not reply as quickly as I wish I could.

I look forward to seeing you folks at the range soon!

I got an email from Juan earlier today telling me that the match that we had scheduled for Saturday will not be happening because of the possibility of snow on Friday night. Oh well... That's Winter in the Rockies...

Merry Christmas to all!

Right now there is a little bit of snow falling but it doesn't appear as though it is going to be enough to spoil our weekend fun.

This coming Saturday, February 16 we will be shooting the WHAC Rim Fire Steel Dogs Match. I plan on being at the range around 8:00am so, if you need to sight in your rifle, show up early. The match itself starts at 9:00am.

If you need driving directions to the range, you will find them at this link : http://wildlifehunters.com/location.htm

I look forward to seeing you at the range this Saturday,
Cy

cysoto
02-17-2013, 22:22
It doesn't help that your scope rings came loose!

I think that the lack of .22LR ammo available prevented us from having more shooters yesterday. Hopefully we'll start to see some ammo show up (at decent prices) on the shelves again sometime soon.

cysoto
03-08-2013, 12:50
**IMPORTANT**

I hate to have to do this to everyone who has been faithfully coming to the .22LR Steel Dogs matches on a regular basis but, in light of how difficult it has been to find .22 ammo lately and fearing that there is no end in sight for this shortage, I have made the decision to cancel the WHAC Rim Fire Steel Dogs Match for a while. Once all this buying/hoarding frenzy subsides and we can all all find .22LR ammo on the shelves again, I will once again start holding these matches.

My sincerest apologies,
Cy

I must admit that I am afraid that the lack of available ammunition and reloading components is going to affect all shooting competitions. Hopefully this madness won't last too much longer and we can go back to holding the match on a monthly basis.

Even though all the reloading components are scarce, there are still a handful of companies that are still accepting back orders, for example: https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/

It will take them weeks (if not months) to fill out back orders but it's worth the wait.

Hello Cy,
How is it looking for a match this month?

cysoto
05-06-2013, 20:17
Sadly, I cannot shoot the match with you folks this month because I will be helping with RO duties at the Rocky Mountain 300 but either Juan or John might be able to run it so, if the weather is on our side, I think that we will be shooting the .22LR match this weekend. I will send an email (as well as post it here) as soon as I get a better idea about the possibility of rain on Saturday.

cysoto
05-07-2013, 15:39
Oops I made I mistake in my "week" count. It turns out that this coming weekend is only the second wk and the match that we will be shooting is the Long Range Precision Rifle Match (which is the center fire version of the .22LR Steel Dogs).

If the weather holds, we should be holding the .22LR Steel Dogs match on the following weekend: Saturday, May 18. I will send the match call email as well as post it here next week.

Hey Cy, are we on for Saturday?

The weather looks good so I think we should be good to shoot the match this weekend. I will not be able to join you folks at this months match (I have to work on Saturday; boo), but I think Juan (and/or John) will be there making sure that the match runs smoothly.

Sorry folks but, for reason beyond my control, we are forced to cancel this Saturday's match.

I am sorry to say that we will be unable to continue to host this match in the future too.

Thank you all participants for your patronage and good shooting times to all.
