3) completely wrong headed

Wow.

I have around $70k in student debt.
It only took me 4 years to graduate.
I have a job.
I can make my loan payments now. (Took a couple years and some hard times, but it's going better now.)
I don't have extra $ to spend on firearms all the time.
The fridge was near empty for a week before I was able to fill it again.
I demand bailouts in the form of firearms and ammunition, food, and cash in my pocket. And the wall st execs are responsible to GIVE it to me!

If I could beat the 3 following concepts into the head of every American I think we'd be better off.

1) A right cannot exist where it creates an obligation to another person.
2) Economics is not a zero sum game.
3) Correlation does not automatically equal cause.

I hear y'all. I DO have serious debt. But it's my own damn fault as I wanted a better education and a better life. Sure, I'm paying for it now, but eventually (when I'm 70! HA) it WILL get better. I'm not beggin' for handouts and working my tired butt off as much as I can, so lump me in the 1%... Although, if anyone has a winning lottery ticket, HA.

These crybabies are total BS.
Yes, the tuition went up since I was in school, but I had to work my Butt off^1000
and load up 21+ credit to save $$$ on tuition (per cr).
I sometimes didn't even have a damn textbook for some classes to save $70-150 per book (used to new).

I bet these @ss clowns on those pics party and get booze up at a campus party and sh1t.
Maybe if they work extra hrs , they can suppliment the load/grant/etc. :(

15 credit hours of school= 10-12 hours of class
+
1-3 hours of homework/day
+
3 hours of p/t work @ $9/hr
=
17 Hour days

You only need 4 hours of sleep so you have 3 extra hours of free time! Why not pull 3 extra hours of work out of there!

These are supposed to be our future? They can't even manage their time, and here they say college is "higher education."

How about looking at the governmental policies that have created a hostile environment for businesses to flourish in?
Or the trade and tax policies that have given carte blanche to corporations outsourcing products and jobs?

I had a discussion about this Occupy Wall St. crap with my uncle over lunch today, and he basically said the same thing.
We have a family business that's made a big name for itself in the industry we're in. A man came to us from Shanghai (via email, then in person recently) saying he likes our products and that he would like to purchase some examples to sell them in China. This could become a very profitable business partnership.
Problem is, because of gov't regulations (repatriation laws), the money we'd make in China would have to stay in China... we couldn't use the funds here, which means our economy can't benefit via money being spent here/jobs being created with company expansions/etc. If we were to try to repatriate our profits, we'd be taxed very heavily to the point where it wouldn't even be worth it. This is happening with much, much larger companies and corporations than our family business... think Microsoft, etc.
This is the crap these idiots should be protesting. Then maybe there'd be more jobs for them to work.

The worst part, IMO, is that most of these kids are getting pointless degrees to begin with. I have a BA in Psych and if I could go back in time and beat some sense into myself to get a degree in CS or something else with some actual hard skills, I would.

If you landed $50-$70K in debt to get a BA in Sociology, Psychology, or something else like Philosophy - and you did it expecting to get some high-paying job, then there is no help for you.

I work at a university and I can't tell you how many thousands of students are here, working towards a degree they don't really understand or enjoy, griping about the cost but with no real plan of how they will take care of that.

Meanwhile, the silent minority is getting degree in Computer Science, Landscape Architecture, various forms of Engineering, etc, and graduating without all this vocal bitching.

Yes, the damn tuition went up 3x more than when I was going to school. It sucks.
Tell you this... during my undergrad yrs, majority of kids/students who were "busy" was only taking 12-15cr per sem, and was busy partying/porning.

This is why I think SLM CAN BE a possible fannie and freddie.
One of the biggest difference is that student loan must be paid even bk is filed.

I don't regret having my college degree, however, if I could go back in time and beat some sense into myself, it would be getting some hard skills as in machinist, welding, plumbing, carpentry. These skills are useful for barter. Bert could probably explain this better than I can, but with these kinds of skills you can trade with farmers and butchers for things you need to live.

So just what is a "Liberal Arts" degree good for anyway? While there is a lot to be said for an advanced education and there are certainly vocations that warrant it in the years I have been working since age 16 I have seen more educated idiots than I care to remember.
When I worked at Chatfield SRA there was a ranger that had a degree in forestry and another in law enforcement. How pathetic that he had to come find the 18 yo long haired kid (me) to hook up a map light in his patrol vehicle because he had no comprehension of "negative" and "positive".
Educated idiot.
To address CStones point- having marketable skills is key to basic survival. I have lived on my own since I was 16 and the longest I have ever been out of work was 2 weeks and that was by choice. I have only really needed help from an outside source once, I borrowed the money from a relative and paid it back in full 3 weeks later. All because I got hurt at work and had to wait for Workmans Comp to kick in.
In a depressed economy there may not be a need for engineers or physicists.
But stuff is always going to break and there will always be a need for people who aren't afraid to get dirty, hell that aint dirt-thats money!
I have never made 100K per year.
But I have always been able to keep my family fed and a roof over their head.
People need to decide what is truly important and get their priorities straight.
There is a tremendous difference between "Wants" and "Needs".

Speaking of which- if these morons protesting Wall Street are so destitute that they have to resort to relatively extreme measures as they are just how the hell are they eating and clothing themselves?

Personally, I have a BS degree, a BA in Latin American Studies, I have never regretted it for a moment. I planned on going to law school, plans changed, long story, I ended up in health care, and I am back in school again for nursing.

The degree allowed me to apply for jobs that had the people-without-degree-need-not-apply stipulation, and get one, and I have sense more than paid off the time in college. Not to discount the education I feel I gained, I count myself as smarter and more well rounded thanks in large part to my time in university. Also, I met my wife while I was in school, I would give up every dollar I will ever make for that.

This argument has nothing to do with college, or stupid degrees, that is just the scape goat de jour, it is an issue of being wasteful. As a people we have come to expect more than we earn. People go to college that they can't afford, just as people buy houses that are too big, cars that are too pricey, and guns that they cant pay for without credit, or iPads, ever.

None of this is the fault of the bankers or Wall Street- Do they allow for it sure, facilitate it, absolutely, but no more so than a firearm facilitates murder or a car allows for accidents. The fault lays on the head of those who pull the trigger or swipe the card, and until we can accept the blame for what we have done we won't fix our problems.

If you are in debt, work, make money, stop spending. If you want to be an artist, go for it, as a hobby, or spend a few years working to pay for the education and equipment. If you bought a house and lost your hat, you took a risk, period. Anyone, ever, who makes an investment should realize that the term implies risk, even the safest investment, savings accounts, are insured. You may as well have gone to Vegas and bet on the short odds...sorry, that's on you. Hand outs should come from mom and God, if someone else gives you something along the way, great, but don't plan on it and don't expect it, and honestly, its very sad to demand it.

Know that I say this as a man who graduated as the economy tanked. We decided not to buy a house when all of our friends were, because the way we read the numbers we decided we couldn't afford it. My wife and I have both faced hard choices, and lay offs, and we have both worked hard and pulled though, to those people who say they can't find a job in this economy, I know we have, I have found several, my wife as well. We just had to lower our standards, changed our plans, and come to terms with a new reality, and keep on working. New cars, nope, fancy guns, not this guy anymore, big house, not planning on it. Happy, you better believe it.

-Who do I blame, I couldn't care less, I can still work hard and make my way. I have a beautiful wife, that knows how to cook, and a pair of dogs that make me laugh, I have a little piece of heaven right here and I don't have the time to waste with a sign on Wall Street.

I'm in school right now.

community college. associate of arts, then I will transfer and finish with a BS in BS (political science)

years back when I would job hunt I'd always find good jobs that I could do, but they wouldn't look at you without a degree.

so, I'm studying poli sci because it's what I'm interested in. and if I have to go back to doing dead end jobs because of the economy, that's fine.

why? because unlike the people that are "marching" (on T.V. all I saw was people sitting around) I am

1. not greedy
2. able to live within my means

I'll never feel like I wasted anything, I'm learning and enjoying it and I consider it money well spent.

these people don't know anything. they are automatons, born and bred to do what they are told.

you could shit them out a gold brick and they would complain that it's too heavy.

I'd join the military in a heartbeat if they'd take me, but that's not an option. so instead of whining about it I just do what a normal, well adjusted person would do. Deal with it.

How hard is it to understand: "Do not live outside your means." These people learned their finances from the gov I think, because they're obviously spending more than they're making and expecting to not have to pay it back. Help me understand the logic here! I screwed up in my youth and piled up some CC debt... now I have 1 credit card- a Best Buy credit car- that has a limit of $500. I make a little over $2,000/month. I pay my bills, live on my own and support myself- If I want a new gun that costs $900, I start setting money aside to afford it, because I damn sure can't afford it right away. How is this so impossible to understand?
