View Full Version : Oh, the things we do for our dogs...

My old girl Cica has gotten too lame to walk more than about 20-30 feet. She used to love her walks, and now can't go.

Solution?...

We got her this contraption that can hook to a bicycle to pull her around, or you can push it like a stroller. She really likes going fast! (but it makes my poor old legs hurt). We get some funny looks, especially from moms pushing their kids around - they look and expect to see another baby, and the funny expressions start there.

God bless you for making the effort to do that for her! One of my girls is getting pretty gimpy too, breaks my heart.

Jackthewall81 - get yourself another dog! Don't deny yourself the joy, ALL dogs are awesome! I love my dogs and couldn't stand to be without at least one. If I lost one, I'd have another puppy before the dirt settled on her grave. My dogs love each other and are so used to having a companion to play with, each of them would be traumatized to be alone. I'm a believer that you should have at least two dogs, they need a buddy to hang with.

Agreed. You can't expect your next dog to be the same as your old lab, but you'll love him/her, and I promise, won't regret it.

My dad was a veterinarian and he used to see cases like this frequently. We never paid too much attention to them but when my moms Daschund(sp) injured her back from tumbling down the outside stairs and basically became a paraplegic my dad did not have the heart to put her down. He thought about it and between us we came up with a solution. I bent up some aluminum rod into a contraption that looked almost like a harness racing sulky. We put a couple of wheels from the hardware on it and I sewed up a nylon sling that the dog was suspended from but left her front legs free. Looked funny as hell but she got used to it and lived a long life. We built a ramp for the stairs and the dog never knew the difference.
We ended up making a couple more for clients dogs.
We do go to the limits for our family members.
Good for you Fentonite!

Jackthewall-nothing ventured, nothing gained.

That's a really cool story, Bert. We've looked into that sort of thing (shes goes to OrthoPets, and they make prosthetics, wagons, dolphin tails, you name it), but her front legs are too shot to take the extra load. As long as she's happy and bright-eyed, we'll do whatever we can for her. I look at it this way: I have no doubt that she'd give her life to protect my wife (very protective), so how could I not do what I can for her? It sucks watching her deteriorate though.

You might want to put a full coverage rear fender on your bike, not a good place for your buddy during the wetter days.

Thats cool as hell! My girl is getting up there in age too, I'll keep that in mind. One of the coolest things I saw, I was at a dog park in the parking lot. A car pulled up in the handicap parking space, an elderly man got out grabbed his walker, I asked if I could help him he said yes. Can you grab my dogs wheel chair out of the back seat. ??? Ok. I opened the back door and here is this little cart with wheels and his little Weiner dog with no back legs!! It looked like this.

My heart grew 100 times in size for this old man and this cute little dog. Not the one in the pic but like that. Almost made me cry!

Good point! She'd really get showered if I went through water. I'll figure something out - thanks.

Cica looks like a wonderful girl. You will certainly be blessed for what you do for her.

I lost Stella to old age on Dec 23 last year. I'd give anything in the world to have just another hour with her. Stella was the special one that touched my heart like no other dog before or since. I still miss her terribly.

Cherish the moments you have with Cica. She obviously cherishes her time with you.

I love my dogs.

I would have loved to have been there when your dog "figured it out" - Hey if I get in this contraption I get to have some fun without all the walking. Seems like it would have been a cool moment when your dog figured out you were trying to help him. You can usually see it in their eyes.

You can tell she's a happy pup, Heres to you for being a good dog owner [Beer]

I have to say that I would be lost without my pups.. I have had many pups but rexiford was the most recent I lost. I lost him about 3.5 years ago and I do miss him. He was akita and rotty mixed, runt of the litter and he weighed 130 lbs when he died. I had him for 14 years.

Last night I started to think about the tough decision to start sleeping downstairs with our old man, since he's really having trouble with the stairs. I don't care for where these thoughts started leading to that's next...

I risked my life to save my dog's. He was such a little Shit leading up to that time (he was about a year and a half old) and ever since that day, it's like something changed in him. He behaved MUCH more, and it seems he began to appreciate me instead of just loving me like a puppy does.

Poor pup, I hope he didn't get too much of that stuff in his face- tear gas (CS) is no fun, it's down right shitty, next to the fire diarrhea, and help-I-can't-stop-vomiting puke.

Yeah, contemplating the inevitable weighs pretty heavy. I sometimes hope that she goes quietly in her sleep, so that I don't have to make the decision when it's time. My biggest fear is failing to make the decision at the right time (either too early or too late). I figure she'll let me know.

For those of you with dogs, give a quick click to this thread (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38691) I started a few months back and take down the information just in case you end up needing them. One of those things you don't want to think about but if you end up needing their services you'll be glad you put the # & info in your phone.
