View Full Version : Gaaah. Protesters...

Normally I'm not a super political guy. I educate myself and I vote, and that's normally as far as I go. So I don't post a lot about politics in the forums I visit.
But these Occupy Fort Collins protesters are killing me. Now they have permission from the local bike co-op to set up a tent city on their property. They're begging for donations to keep the protests going 24/7. Wait - you are protesting how the rich are manipulating the system so they can stay rich, and to keep protesting you need the middle class to donate "environmentally friendly food staples"? I thought they were barely scraping by! How can they afford to give you guys food or a "portable toilet"?
I often joke that hippies are my natural enemy, but I'm starting to think it's true. I hope that the neighboring businesses start whatever process they need to to declare this some kind of nuisance and make the city kick these lazy *******s back to their parents' basements.

I'm surprised they didn't just take over the bum park by Rodizio's.

I think if they took that over the city could do something about that. The bike co-op seems to be private property. Besides, we all know that real hippies don't actually co-mingle with homeless people, they just look like them.

Seems like a pretty elaborate way to describe a Molotov cocktail.

If that happened I would be wishing I owned the nearest liquor store...if the "99%" idiots even had anything!
Ft. Collins is becoming another Boulder. I grew up here and it is changing. Every place you look are cars from Illinois and Massachusetts with "Coexist" and "Obama 2008".
Damn!
best thing to do is honk while next to them, then flip them off.
If enough people are mean to them maybe they will leave.
I've been watching the Denver ones. They pushed the local drug dealers from the Cofax and Broadway corner to the center of the park. I walked thru today and the only capitalists I saw were the dealers and the mexican burito salesman.
I saw signs looking for the downfall of the rich which acording these folks is anyone with a few dimes they don't want to share. I have not seen a single American flag, not once.
Basicly I see the people who are unemployable regardless of the economy, requesting that the gov level the outcomes because they don't fit in the current society we live in.
Just for fun I circle the park in the am at 5:30-6 on my way to work with my horn going, just to be sure they are keeping the protest going 24/7.

Bet your arse! Nice job- circle the tent city honking your horn early in the morning! YeeHaaaahhh!
Oh man, I just hooked up my CB system, and decided that I didn't need to spend the money on a PA system right now, because I couldn't think of a reason I would ever use it. I guess I found a reason.

Oooooooh man... I could have donated, by way of my daughter, quite a few to that supply if I would have saved them up for the week.

While I haven't seen them (I don't have a reason to go downtown much- if you don't know me, I'm not much of a "townie" )
There are reportedly protesters at Acacia park downtown COS... the police were considering kicking them out for "illegal camping" but have since decided they're not harming anyone, and will let them be. http://www.gazette.com/articles/police-126625-protesters-springs.html
I'm not sure how I feel about that... I may have an opinion if I went there more often, and was accosted by them in some way. At least I know where I could go with my "I am the 53%" sign if I was so inclined to not have a life.

We drove by them last night at around 0400 and it was pretty sad. A handful of disorganized and freezing people standing in a parking lot. I honestly wouldn't have been able to tell most of them from homeless people, and I'm not joking.

As it gets colder they'll be vacating the tent cities in droves. Only the ones with no where else to go (the truly homeless) will still be there. I think as long as they don't cause any problem the police will be instructed to leave them alone.

Honestly, if the "real" protesters just swapped out for the homeless guys, I'd be happy. It'd keep them out of my area and the city guys would have them in one small place. I work for the campus and once it gets cold we start having a lot of them doing...unexpected...security work for us by finding every broken door lock and every unsecured nook on campus.

I would google it, but google can't put that special CO-AR spin on it that I love so dearly.

Who are they? Hippies that crawled out from their parent's basement.
What are they protesting? Life, and how it isn't fair.
They're bitching at the gov't for getting too involved on Wall St., and then turning around and asking for the same handouts and special treatment they're speaking up against.
Here's a nice tidbit from Facebook:
Me: "Sorry, but these "99%ers" have no idea what they're talking about. The ONLY thing that we, as American citizens, are entitled to is OPPORTUNITY. What you do with that opportunity... whether you succeed or fail... is up to you. If you fail, go nowhere with your life, live in debt and have no way out of it, whatever, the only person to blame is yourself. That's the beauty of America, and if you don't like it you can go live somewhere else."
Him:If you read the Constitution of the U.S., or any other book about human rights, freedom, etc., you'd know that the people of America and of the world are ALL entitled to MUCH MUCH MORE than simple opportunity. The 99%ers are doing exactly what the people who wrote the constitution did - they are boldly announcing a WAR against tyranny and oppression... The reason that what these people are doing seems so radical is because great minds and spirits have always suffered ridicule at the hands of the majority. every great scientist/visionary, etc. in history who ever made the world a better place was at first laughed at and bullied by those too short-sighted to see a better tomorrow. and with an iron-will, these protestors, just like the freedom fighters and visionaries before them WILL succeed. The kings never give freedom to the people. THE PEOPLE MUST TAKE IT FROM THEM. these protestors are the hope for a better tomorrow in which humanity is united with a common goal. Equality and Solidarity across the land, without Fascists and crooks and criminals making the world a terrible place!
Me: I took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, you can be damn sure that I know what's in it. You're entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... the pursuit of happiness, not happiness itself. Not success, only the opportunity to succeed. You aren't entitled to other people's money, "debt forgiveness" on student loans and and credit cards, and all that other crap these protesters want. And no, the people of the world aren't entitled to what we have. The Constitution protects (note: protects, not grants) the rights and freedoms of American citizens... not Mexicans, Canadians, French, Africans, or anybody else. If they want to get in on it, they can become an American citizen and pay taxes just like everybody else. People like you that think we should just hand things out to anybody and everybody are what's leading to the demise of our Republic.
Its pretty funny to watch this crap though... you're bitching at the gov't for getting too involved on Wall St., and then turning around and asking for the same handouts and special treatment you're speaking up against.
And one more thing... we do have equality across the land (in theory, through not really with the NAACP, Affirmative Action, and all that crap). However, equal rights does NOT mean equal results.

Excellent! Terrific points all around. You ROCK mcantar18c.[Beer]
A lot of what the individuals out there are asking for is pie in the sky crazy talk, namely debt forgiveness.
However, there are things that are very wrong with the country. The bailouts and TARP stuff, that no one has been prosecuted, and that these institutions are larger now than they were before ... is unacceptable.
There is a wide difference between being against corporate greed and capitalism. You can be capitalist without resorting to lobbying for tax loop holes and expecting handouts when you've dug yourself into a hole. The fact that they were bailed out isn't capitalism.
So far Matt Taibbi has had the best list of things they should be clamoring for: http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2011/10/matt-taibbis-advice-ows
The interesting thing about #OWS is how fractured and incoherent it is. It remains to be seen if the find a platform that more people can get behind. I really believe there are fundamental problems, and solutions that will yet be proposed, that people of all positions on the political spectrum will agree on -- and the entrenched politicans will oppose.
I'd love to see the effort come to that point, but I fear it'll remain in the "Give us money too!" vein, which is untenable.
