That's my guess. I did the same thing my first time, though it was pointed away from my face. Good thing ya managed to close your eyes before it hit.

SMooth.................
I bet that one smarts.
as a side... anyone know what I should do about a "loose" pin on the barrel link of my colt MKIV ? is there anything I can do ?? it falls out when I disassemble and heck sometimes slides partway out during assembly ... very annoying .

I got lucky, a Friend of Mine warned me several times to watch out and he was right.
Thanks Bert.
Shrapnel? Spring? Details?

Yup-easy fix- take a nice and sharp center punch and "stake" the pin in place. On the outside of the lug where the hole is place the point of the punch just outside of the hole with the pin in place. Give it a sharp rap but you are not trying to drive the punch through the lug. The punch mark should upset a smidge of lug metal into the hole, holding the pin in place. Repeat for the other side. Stone any burrs flush with the lug surface.
If you are not sure/comfortable taking a hammer to your 1911 give me a shout. I hammer goodly!

An "idiot scratch" on a 1911 is caused by incorrect re-assembly technique. For some reason lots of people think that the slide stop rotates upward from the trigger area while applying pressure to it in an attempt to push it into place. It doesn't and the result is the "idiot scratch".
The correct way is to line up the takedown notch (crescent cut) in the slide with the slide stop and push the slide stop home. Sometimes they can be quite reluctant but with a little stone work on the back of the slide stop they snick into place quite nicely.

I'll send ya a PM to talk about you doing it ....
I'll tear apart a 2300 buck macbook pro.. I'll rip apart 10,000 dollar moving lighting fixtures... I'll tear out motors in Jeeps and Motorcycles but for some reason taking a hammer to my 600 buck pistol scares me to death!!!! LOL
I've had the recoil spring scare me a couple times in my 1911.. my barrel bushing is kinda tight ( tho this is a good thing from what I understand...) and had it move that last little bit during disassembly unexpectedly a couple times.. haven't hit myself with it yet tho I got close one time... and spent a few mins searching the kitchen for the missing spring plug! ( damn thing rolled half way under the fridge!)

Glad your eye is OK.
When I got my first 1911 Auto ordnance I think. I stripped it down and went to put it back together, that is when I shot the recoil spring and plug into the living room, took me awhile the find the plug then I got it back together.

Luckily for me my dad had good parenting skills and taught me about the dangers of what happened here. He also told me when he gave me my first 1911 that if I put an idiot scratch on it he'd take it back. (See dad, I do listen... sometimes...)
I did something similar while reassembling (read: f**king around with) an M9. I didn't maintain positive control over the guide rod and it shot out and hit a full bird colonel right in the junk. Thankfully he had a sense of humor and laughed it off.

so what happened?
yeah i'm a 1911 virgin... what happened?
In order to disassemble a 1911, you have to take the recoil spring out from the front of the dust cover. You essentially rotate a retaining ring on the front of the dust cover, and if you aren't ready for it, the spring shoots out, along with the metal retainer on the end of it. It's been a while since I've done it, but that is essentially how I remember it.

There is a similar situation with the SAW. You can get tapped HARD if you do that wrong.

Part #24 is under pressure from part #25 and is held in place by part #2.
To disassemble, remove part #2 while maintaining pressure on part #24.
He forgot that last bit.

I don't know the technical names for the parts, but there's a doodad that holds the thingee on the end of the spring. When you rotate the doodad, you have to maintain compression on the thingee at the end of the spring and let it up slowly. If you don't, then the spring projects the thingee. And if you're looking down the barrel, then the thingee hits you in the face.

Has anyone launched a cleaning rod out of a M14/m1a??
When cleaning one with the bolt locked back if you hit the bolt with the rod it will disengage the bolt lock causing the bolt to slam home while at the same time launching your cleaning rod out like an arrow. [ROFL1]
You quickly learn to stick a stripper clip in the clip guide after that
I was in grade school (severely into anything weapon related) and my grandfather took me to an Army recruiting booth they set up in town. I promptly picked up a 1911 and put my left hand on top of the slide and tried to rack it. Being a young kid I didn't quite have enough strength so I got the slide partially back and had to let it go back forwards. Now the left hand (still on top of the slide) managed to get the web of the thumb between the slide and the hammer (which wasn't locked back) so that the hammer pinched the web right painful like. I literally was standing there with the 1911 hanging by the web of my thumb.
Not uttering a word I managed to get the hammer back the second try. I suspect adrenalin probably played a part in this. I very quickly replaced said pistol on the table and didn't mention it to anyone till today.
On the other hand I did impress the recruiters with my knowledge of military weapons and thus got a tour and instruction in the use of all the gear there including an M-60 and a LAW.
For a kid less than 10 years old and big time into weapons I was in heaven.
Ouch!
I remember when I first got my 1911.

How's the Meridian helping your hands out? Still using it?
I did something similar years ago when field stripping my 1911 in the living room. I lost control of the plug, and it went zipping past my left ear, across the living room...
...and straight down a heater vent...[Bang]...ALL the way down
I ended up ordering a new one piece guide rod assembly...[Rant1][ROFL1]
OUCH! I bet that was just the cherry on top of your weekend....
