I'm sure there are a few of you who think a phone is a phone is a phone but that's not what this is about. I've been partial to the iPhone having owned the 1st gen and now my current 3gs for two years and it's been great. I was planning on running to the apple store to pick the new 4s up (like everybody else.) but after a thinking it out I don't see a huge difference between it and my wife's 4 so I'm gonna wait it out to see what this new Nexus Prime that I've heard so little about has to offer. I really don't see anything the iPhone offers that a Droid can't, well there's Flash (or lack there of) but what say you, and why?

I plan on picking up a 4S after training (late Feb/early March). Had the 3G from when they first came out till I killed it a couple months ago.
Is it better than a Droid? Maybe, maybe not. But I know I like and am familiar with the interface and I don't want to learn a new one, and I know I won't have any issues getting it to play nice with my computer (MacBook), and my sim card already has the iPhone plan on it from my 3G, so there's really no contest.

I should add that I'm not partial to one carrier or another, ATT's been okay but having to go Verizon wouldn't be out of the question.

Sharpie - why droid?

I can understand the whole "My phone's better, because it's mine and I like it" thing but why? And what phone do you have?

Droid, switched over from iphone since the droid first came out on tmobile, now running the mytouch 4g, app market might be better on the apple but droids is getting bigger, also love that I no longer have to plug it to my computer to get software updates, idk maybe they changed that with the iphones now? Either way love the 4g compared to the 3g speed wise.

Bought it in Perth, AU
Works on any network that uses a Sim...

I have an HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon. The 4G is ridiculously fast, btw. I like the Droids because they're easy to use, for the most part have open source codes (or something like that... I'm no genius, but somehow managed to root my phone and make it even more awesome), and can do pretty much everything the iPhone can do (I think) without the constraints of things like iTunes.

My experience with the iPhone is limited, but it seems like a pretty sweet phone. I just like Droids better. Like I said, I think it mostly comes down to personal preference.

Lookin' for a reason I guess. There's that and the whole flash thing [Tooth]

Sim cards have been no longer on the iPhone since the 4 (on att anyways)

Droid- I've never had an iPhone, but kids had Ipod touch 4G... and that was enough.

no replaceable battery? WTF?
Interface just feels... insulting... been that way every since Mac came out, so it's probably a prejudice on my part
does the iPhone allow memory upgrades (micro SD or the like), or is that just the iPod that doesn't do that?
and Flash (probably the single biggest mistake)
iTunes and the app store just piss me off

I just got a Droid this weekend, already like it way better than the iStuff (Yes, I work for a phone Co. but their service doesn't work at my house)

I had an iPhone for a while, and I miss it from time to time. Switch to Droid though because I was tired of AT&T, and I've been happy with em.

I like how droid is open source, and are a little less douchey than Apple products. Apple fanatics are kinda like people who drive German cars; they think they're better than others...

Android
Most higer ends one have dual core processors
HDMI capabilities
Highend cameras
Record video in 1080
More free aplications
Apple likes to harge googles likes to give it away... apps I mean.
You can still put your itunes on your phone with doubletwist
You have flash player built in so you can watch clips
Larger screen
You can get on that is 4G
Faster internet
Make it a hotspot
And better insurance plans

As for the for the iPhone 4s...

Android
Most higer ends one have dual core processors -Does
HDMI capabilities -Does
Highend cameras -Does...and then some
Record video in 1080 -Does
More free aplications -Doesn't
Apple likes to harge googles likes to give it away... apps I mean.-True.
You can still put your itunes on your phone with doubletwist -True
You have flash player built in so you can watch clips -Doesn't
Larger screen -Doesn't
You can get on that is 4G -True
Faster internet -Seen them side by side (4g galaxy s) - I didn't see a difference in speed
Make it a hotspot-Does...for a fee; been that way for a couple gens now
And better insurance plans ?

Gunner
10-17-2011, 09:24
you can insure a droid through the cells companies insurance, iphones have to go through apple.. I beleive and the hotspot with the iphone would only be 3G.

Choice is yours....

I vote for the droid. you have to "jailbreak" an iphone to do what a droid does. Iphones arent all that compatible with PC's either.
But no magpul cases for the droids :(

Apple likes to harge googles likes to give it away... apps I mean.-True. apple does not control what dev's charge for their apps... most folks i know that are even hard core droid fans admit that iPhone apps are more refined.
You can still put your itunes on your phone with doubletwist -True I'm not sure why folks hate iTunes so much .... I've used iTunes for 10 years now.. never failed me yet.
You have flash player built in so you can watch clips -Doesn't flash sucks anyways..... most the time.. I hate it on my laptop too.. not sad to not have it on my phone
Larger screen -Doesn't larger screen larger phone... I honestly think apple has the right ratio currently.
You can get on that is 4G -True 4G is so subjective... no one has TRUE 4G ... no LTE or wiMAx. AT&T has already asked apple to give the 4s a 4G icon so that when it can get certain speeds to call it 4G. frankly no one has 4G it's ALL marketing. get the hell over it till you have LTE or WIMAX... you don't; have 4G you have 3G.5 or so
Faster internet -Seen them side by side (4g galaxy s) - I didn't see a difference in speed read what I just said.
Make it a hotspot-Does...for a fee; been that way for a couple gens now that is your carriers plans... not apple fault.
And better insurance plans ?yeah other carriers have had much better insurance plans for phones..... applecare+ is finally coming close in this arena.

What it boils down to is your choice.... you are going to get more biased opnions over this subject than anything. Some people are loyal to apple and will defend it. Some dont care. You need to go look at each carriers high end Android and thier iphones.

Droid- I've never had an iPhone, but kids had Ipod touch 4G... and that was enough.

Interface just feels... insulting... been that way every since Mac came out, so it's probably a prejudice on my part I am happy the way the interface works.. but then again I like mac over windows. personal preference i guess here
does the iPhone allow memory upgrades (micro SD or the like), or is that just the iPod that doesn't do that? I have had 32GB iPhones since I could get them that big.. i only use about half of that as it is. and I have 6 movies... over 12 hours of music plus all my apps.. i don't get the idea of needing more space on my phone... how many movies am i gonna watch before i get back to my comp to charge / change them out anyways ? i saw no need to spend the extra 100 bucks for the 64 gb iPhone 4S
and Flash (probably the single biggest mistake) flash sucks. period. no lose to me.
iTunes and the app store just piss me off purely opinion I guess... iTunes has never done me wrong..but then again I've always been mac since it came out... maybe it just works better on mac then windows.

Droid Bionic and True 4G is way faster than 3G or 3.5G iv done side by side test and it was amazing how much faster it was, that being said I like Droid's because I am the weak link, whatever I want to do with my phone I am able to and it is easy to root. The one plus of the iPhone is the battery it is better than my droid but my droid is faster so ill trade battery life for speed.

I have the HTC EVO, and i love it. I have been on an Android phone aince the first generation mytouch. But just like the iphone, droid phones are limited by certain providers. When i was with tmobile, I had service everywhere, when I had the mytouch 4g it was lightning fast, and always had data network service anywhere i went. I moved to sprint for an amazingly low plan compared to my tmobile plan. The EVO was super fast when I first got it, but is slowing down now. I don't know about the true 4g thing, I know tmobiles was actually called their H network, Sprint has very little 4g service area, so I'm usually on wireless. Sprints 4g is much slower than tmobiles, that I know.

But I still am a Droid guy, and honestly it is purely because I it is open source. Honestly, I just don't like Apple in general, so I stay away from anything they make.

no replaceable battery? WTF? ALL and yes I mean ALL of my driod friends seem to have their batteries die nightly... my iPhone is only at 50% or better every time... and yes i use my phone just as much or more .

There seems to be a misconception that "Droid" means one model or manufacturer of phone... it's an OS, and there are many different flavors of "droids" from several different companies to suit different needs (one of the other things I like) I have NOT experienced battery issues as you describe with this LG (I admit it's not a very high-powered droid, I'm not that gadget- hungry)

and the battery replacement isn't for when it's discharged- it's for when it won't take a charge, or takes a partial charge. Apple wants to charge $$$ to replace the battery, and you ship it to them? no thanks.

also cost, I got this droid for $60 with no contract- so I am able to use a cheaper contract that doesn't subsidize phones

I agree it mostly comes down to preference- if someone gave me an iPhone, I'd look for a way to trade it for a droid. so it's not even about price, they just don't do it for me...

this question is more like "1911 or Glock". You choose whatever fits you more.
I voted Android simply because of the cost of paid apps (most apps cost from $1 to $4 and as soon as you bought it you can install it as many times and to as many devices as you want too) + being an "open source" OS it upgrades constantly and growth much faster than Apple.

I have Verizon and have no problems. Have had an "android" phone for a year and a half with very minor problems (have to pull the battery every 6 months or so). My LG ally is ok, my wife just got an LG vortex last month and its cool but no key board.

iphones have some features I like, but so do the droids. Its gonna be a tough decision in Feb when its time to upgrade! I was leaning towards the iphone but I may switch from android to droid.

A plus for the iphone I guess (word of mouth). A co-worker told me if you get an iphone dont get the service plan/warranty stuff, he said if you break it besides the $6/month or what ever you have to pay $99 to get it replaced. But he said you could take it to the apple store or what ever in denver and get it fixed/replaced for $99 without paying the monthly charge? I dont know the wholse story just heard it from an apple guy.

my main issue with other phones, and PCs for that matter is that they are slapped together with the cheapest possible components and just dont last. Apple crap is more expensive for sure, but in my experience (at least with electronics) is you get what you pay for.

I switched from a 3gs in 2009 to a nexus one when it first came out, never reconsidered iphone again. to the OP, if you're a guy who wants to use your phone internationally, get an android phone, because you only need to unlock it ONCE unlike iPhones because iOS from Apple uses software unlock, Android uses hardware unlock. What sucks about iPhone is that you can unlock it, but once apple releases a new firmware update and you update, you gonna lose the unlock. I have t-mobile personally, and with Android, you can tether till your phone blew up or whatever and still dont get charge extra. There are many other cool things with Android for me to list, but one thing for sure is CyanogenMod if anyone here know what it is.

The only "bugs" I've dealt with are poorly designed apps that I've ran across. I've never had a virus.

I've had the OG Droid and a Droid X. They've both been great phones. I'm personally looking forward to the Galaxy Nexus. It's going to be a beast and I'm really excited to see what improvements come with Ice Cream Sandwich.

I'm tempted by the 64GB 4S. I've got 35gb of music and the ability to have it with me at all times and only have to carry one device would be awesome but I just can't bring myself to get an iPhone.

Google Music FTW!

Free cloud service (online storage for those not familiar) for music files. You can upload your ENTIRE library to the cloud and then create playlists that you can access from ANY web capable device. Go to a friend house and want to play that new CD for him/her? Simply launch a browser, log in and there's your whole library... playlists and all. Google has a Music app for Android devices that makes the integration just like they're on the device. You can even choose playlists to cache on your mobile device so you have access regardless of internet access. This alone made it so I no longer have to shop for 32gb memory cards. I got SO tired of creating playlists on all my devices and editing files on several devices and now I don't have to. One library for everything.

That being said, I also choose Android for the following reasons:

True open OS that began life open with TONs of aftermarket support for customization.
User changeable battery which allows me to carry spare batteries so I'm NEVER out of juice nor do I have to plan my life around being near a power source at some point.
User replaceable and upgradeable storage via MicroSD cards.
Non-propreitary cables and accessories.
MANY devices to choose from creates competition which means better devices at lower prices to the consumer.

This last one is opinion based but...

I don't have to associate with the group of people who push their Apple cult onto everyone like the next Christianity even though they know NOTHING about Apple, Android, RIM, Symbian or technology but sit and talk like they know EVERYTHING and Apple is the pinnacle of technology and nothing else can even compete. That's not to say ALL Apple users are like that but a vast majority are so don't jump in and say this is unfair because you aren't because 1) you are the exception to the rule if you aren't 2) don't realize that you are or 3) can't argue that most Apple users fit this template. Either way Apple users tend to look at their mobile device decision as a religion rather than a device to keep in touch with others.

I was in on the beta but honestly forget that I have it 99% of the time.

I've been using it since it came out and if you use it fully to it's ability it's amazing. Too many people try to use it like a music player and leave all their files local to be played and don't realize what makes Google Music so useful. I've deleted all other music players and use Google Music not only on my phone but on other PCs too. I love only having to create a single set of playlists which are accessible anywhere. For instance, I have one that's Lonely Island and just the other day I was talking about 'I'm on a Boat' and my buddy who I was with had never heard of any of it. I bellied up to his desk and within seconds he was listening to the entire Lonely Island collection and laughing. If I change from my Evo 4G to something else I need only install Google Music and there's my entire library, playlists and all. Between that and the way Google handles the rest of what I would normally store on a phone it's just one more item that makes changing devices that much easier.

I dislike Swype. I used it for a few months when it first came out and then I realized that it's not faster because you have to not only know the spelling of all words but you also have to spell out each letter of the word. I went back to a standard style keyboard (Smart Keyboard to be exact) with predictive text and realized that most words required only entering the first few letters before the entire word showed up in the suggestions and I could simply select it and move onto the next one. This is especially handy when you're typing and are distracted by something because you don't have to finish whatever word you're on to stop. You can look away and come back to complete the word. I liked the idea but in practice it's just not as fast and requires a lot more attention & thought to use.

Android for sure "Droid" is Motorola's flavor of android OS and I wouldn't recommend Motorola phones anymore.

And Swype is pretty cool. It will learn the more you use it and pretty soon your don't even have to spell correctly, it will remember what you "meant" by the pattern. Once you have taught it you can swipe very fast and it will work perfectly.

This seems to be another personal preference: Iphone's "autocorrect" has websites dedicated to it's amusing side effects, and using an Ipod touch 4G for 2 weeks was frustrating to me, but 4 days with an android, and I'm already comfortable with swype.

the more I think about it, the more I think that there are 10 types of people in this world- those that understand binary, and those that don't.

I'm reconsidering my decision on the iPhone.
According to a friend, the "milspec" Casio GZ One Commando can withstand 8ft drops onto concrete, being submerged in water, and texting in the shower.

I posted about that phone earlier and no one commented on it. I like to read the reviews on the cell phone sites to see which phones are crap or not. One guy said he dropped his off a chair or something and the screen shattered. I still want one.

I went with the 4s. I had to drive all the way over to Longmont to get the one I was after. I'm already cumulative
To the format, don't have to fuss with it so it'll runn the way I like, and I'm still on the original iPhone plan...guess it was kind of a no brainer. I'm just hoping that apple will come to their senses and run flash player.

Siri kicks much ass. I was messin' around with it and when asked where to hide a body it'll automatically ask to locate nearby swamps, reservoirs, dumps, mines, and metal foundries lol. I just told it I wanted a certain oral act performed and it brought up a couple nearby escorts. [LOL]

It is bad ass. I Just upgraded my 4 to the 4S..I am however noticing that my battery is draining much faster then the one on my 4, all my setting are the same. I noticed others are seeing this also, I suspect its just a software glitch. I'm sure the next ios patch will fix it. Very cool phone.

I have a Droid 2. Don't like it. (Edit: The only thing I like is it's seamless integration with Google and Google Navigation. I hate the SHORT battery life, constant freezing, user interface and email "sync" or lack thereof) My wife has an iPhone and it's pretty good but I need a real keyboard. Blackberry is hands down my favorite for a work phone and I have had MANY in the past. Wish my current job would issue me a Blackberry.

I've actually given away two brand new iPhone 4Ss in the last few months. I've been suffering with an old BlackBerry, waiting for the new Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S3 (http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxys3/index.html)

I'm actually thinking that'll be my next phone whenever it hits AT&T. Hopefully it won't flop like the nexus.

The SGS3 is going to be dope and fly but you can get an HTC Evo LTE (aka One X, One S, etc) now and it will do everything the SGS3 can do and a little bit more. I too was waiting for the SGS3 but I'm glad I got the HTC Evo LTE last week because this thing is amazing and the SGS3 doesn't quite have the specs it was supposed to which would have made it a fair bit better than the Evo LTE. Instead with how it's going to come out it's about the same as the HTC Evo LTE and even not quite as good in a few areas. Whichever one you get you can't really do wrong but I chose to not wait an extra month as I've been burned too many times over the years by devices that are supposed to be available on a certain date in the future.

If you like options, if you like different price points and hardware to choose from, and if you like freedom, choose the Android market.

If you like a nice, comfy, censored walled garden that looks beautiful, choose Apple.

And if you are just hipster, choose Apple and sneer a lot.

On paper it edges the SGS3 in a few categories but in real life most users probably won't notice too many differences really. SGS3 international version is quad-core but the US version is only dual core since quad doesn't currently play well with LTE. SGS3 was supposed to have a better camera but in a cost savings move they opted for better software rather than better hardware. The Evo LTE has a better camera as a result and the software is a little bit better as well. The SGS3 is doesn't even have Samsung's best screen let alone the industry's best screen so I give the edge to the HTC here. I personally prefer the more natural colors displayed by the display of the Evo LTE and feel that the SGS3's Pentile display tends to be a little dark for my taste. Comparisons are saying the HTC's display is noticeably better than the SGS3. Another area I like HTC over Samsung is updates. HTC tends to be a lot quicker with OS updates and Samsung tends to drag their feet and keep people waiting when others (like HTC) have updates for months in some cases. If you have Sprint the Evo LTE also supports HD voice calls once they roll it out. I prefer HTC's build quality to that of Samsung devices which is kind of personal preference but most who review these devices will agree. Beats Audio. I know what you're thinking... it's just marketing, right? Wrong. It adds a decent EQ that is used when you plug in ANY headphone or stream over bluetooth so for most who use their phone as their music player this will be a noticeable difference to most. Kick stand. This thing is just SO dang useful sometimes and SUCH a good idea to add. Another note is developer community. HTC tends to have a larger developer community and root was available before we even had phones. HTC even allows the end user to unlock the bootloader with an HTC supplies unlock code. Samsung is also known for their radio issues and lots of SGS2 owners still complain of GPS issues.

My only negative so far with the HTC Evo LTE is the fact that there is no removable battery. I'm a fairly high use user so I've always had two or three charged batteries on me so I was afraid this phone wouldn't meet my needs but so far it hasn't been an issue. With a sealed case the phone is more sturdy and solid feeling but it also allows them to get higher capacity (about 25% higher capacity than my previous Evo 4G which was noticeably thicker & heavier as well) than they could if they had to allow for a removable battery. In comparison this phone has pretty amazing battery life and I no longer have to worry about carrying spare batteries and chargers. So this could be a negative for some but if someone like me doesn't have issues then I think most people will be just fine.

On top of all of this I get sick of waiting around for new devices. I've wasted far too long waiting around for devices that are supposed to be out by a certain date and get pushed back sometimes months. That's not to say that will be the case with this phone but if a phone comes out a month or two after a device that it can't even top what's the reason for waiting for it?

But hey, they BOTH have shitty names! [LOL]

This sounds about right although to extrapolate a little on what you said: If you aren't very tech savvy and want a phone to work out of the box just get an iPhone. If you aren't scared of technology and prefer the ability to customize just about every aspect of your devices to fit your use and needs then go Android. With a little more time invested into your Android device you can do a LOT more with it. If you lack friends and just need someone to acknowledge your stupid statements or jokes regardless of if it's actual human interaction or not get an iPhone.
