"Police officials confirm that more than 30 firearms, stored overnight at a building considered secure, were stolen. 'It's embarrassing.... It's a lesson learned,' Deputy Chief Michael Downing says."

Somebody is going to pay for this. Don't you think a nice safe would have been better?

Especially when the actual SWAT facility is only a mile away. Negligence at worst.

Brought to you by the State of California... "only the Police are responsible enough to have guns!"

I would bet that most of the members here have their guns more securely stored then these guys.

Inside job? [Wink]. Very possible, but proper storage would have stopped it regardless.

too much confidence, like "what kind dumb@ss is gonna break in here" thing...
And I agree, proper storage would have stopped it regardless!

If they can't protect them, they shouldn't be allowed to keep them lol

Folks, it's OK...
They were just "paintball Guns"

The 15 MP-5 submachine guns and 15 colt .45 handguns were modified to fire small plastic bullets, similar to those used in paintball, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said.

“These weapons are not functional,” Smith said. “They will not shoot bullets. You cannot shoot bullets without extensive modifications.”

Smith compared the modified weapons to "paintball guns."

I do believe that in an anti gun place like CA or NJ, if you allowed 20 or so firearms to be stolen they would prosecute with something.

I smell simunition guns thus a barrel swap is in order at the very least

it was all planned. the new way around fast and furious. "they were stolen" is all Holder needs to say now.

and of course when they are used in crime, the media will say the submachine guns were bought in texas over the counter at a deer hunting convention.

this is a lie.

simunitions =/= a paintball gun.

and the "extensive modifications" needed to shoot bullets can be done in moments by anyone that can field strip the firearm.

if the live uppers/parts were stored with the guns (and why wouldn't they be?) then the thieves got a killer take.

I think that you'll also have to change the recoil spring. But, you are right, if you can field strip it, you can make it go w/real ammo.

If I were the RSO, I would be certain that no "live" firearms were unsecured during training exercises in the building, thus the components required for live ammo would probably be barred from the facility, and duty weapons would have to be placed in lockers prior to entering the range portion of the building. It sounds like they did a reasonable job of securing the simunition weapons(a number of locked doors/gates), but I have to question why they were left there with no alarms, and no one on site. Would it really have been that hard to load them in a van and take them back to the station?
