best for what purpose? what caliber?
if you're not putting a price limit on it, then an NFA full-auto Maadi (Pre'86) would be high on the list.. [Coffee]
DANGERTASTIC!

Im not a huge AK guy, but I think its the DESIGN, not the manufacturer.
AK's are pretty reliable, you can shoot **** ammo and drag it behind your truck to the range and they still go bang.
Check out a WASR 10.
Aslo, if you want to spend the money on it, The Century Arms Centurion is pretty good.
Arsenal makes a good one
And of course Saiga

They call those AR-15s :)

a vepr
edit: sorry i wasnt thinking a vepr is rpk pattern (thicker receiver, heavier barrel....)
mitchell arms yugos imported in the 80's are supposed to be pretty good, also styr imported maadis from back then are also supposed to be pretty decent. as far as hat's on the market now, i would say it might be hard to beat a FEG hungarian import amd for 7.62x39 and for 5.45 a saiga (an arsenal is basicly a saiga)
though i've heard krebs are supposed to be decent too but know knows
i know where you can get a nice all bulgarian .223 sidefolder ;)

i assume you're not a fan of m1 garands-m14's either then? ;)
a kalasnikov action is basicly a garand action upside down if you think about it.

Quite opposite.
They utilize a similar gas system (piston) but I would hardly call either an AK lol

i was just teasing with you since the garand and kalashnikov both have 2 lug lock up but they have as much different about them as they have in common lol
I think the Chinese Polytech is supposed to be tops.....dont quote me though.

Get A good solid parts kit and put it together with quality American compliance parts like Krebs custom and red star. That's what Jesus would do.
You could get a russian AK-47 for $20. The catch is you have to get it from a war torn country in Africa.
But I like my neutered WASR-10 just fine.

I don't think any of the above are a wrong answer, they're just missing the component of "best for WHAT?"
Norinco variants haven't been mentioned:
The Navy Seals and the Military Defense Council of Finland, both selected Norinco of China to supply Chinese type 56 AK-47 rifles, which are virtually identical (except for select-fire components) to the Norinco MAK-90, & without the MAK-90's thumbhole stock).
THAT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING, as the GALIL AK's, F.E.G.'s from Hungary, Arsenal of Bulgaria, and Russian AK's were all tested against the Chinese Norinco, and the Norinco came out on top as the most rugged, and best value, despite the fact that it would have been easier for Finland and the Navy Seals to buy AK-47 variants from other Eastern European, or Russian sources. In short, figure out what you want to do with it, and go from there... choose a caliber suited to what you want it to do, and there should be a number of choices in that caliber.
I enjoy building them from a kit, making what I want- need to order some parts to make some progress on my 5.56 Tantal build (will be like a Beryl commando, with an AR mag adapter- all my 5.56 mags will be AR mags)
you also may want to look at the VZ58 from Czechoslovakia, imported by TGI or Century (cheaper if Century, but more prone to problems) the platform is ergonomically similar to an AK, but all around a better rifle- other than parts availability...

People love Saiga's and I just got to shoot the 12g version with a 20 round mag and it rocked my world. I have a Yugo AK and a Bulgarian AK and I love them both.
Well if I had unlimited funds and were buying MY best AK, it would be an Arsenal SLR-107UR, sent to Rifle Dynamics to be SBR'd, tuned, and refinished, with and Ultimak and an Aimpoint T1. Add a suppressor to that and now we're talking!

That all sounds cool, but call me old fashioned, I'm not a fan of these techno'd out AK's... I think Mikhail would come over and slap you and say "You no like my perfect rifle the way I make, you have to try to 'improve?' Simple is best."

Kalashnikov doesn't even really like the ak74, just think of how he veiws the newer 100 series haha. In my opinion one of the best improvements to the ak platform is the amd-65. I also like the direction yugoslavia went when they modernized their ak47 by going with an rpk receiver. But with everything said and done my favorite ak of all time would have to be the yugoslavian m76 what's better than an ak chambered in 8x57mm with a milled receiver, adjustable gas regulator and still takes a bayonet ;)

Justin(jrief)- I bet 8 out of 10 would pick my tula aksu. haha
Ya your m76 is sweet, to bad its heavier than a .50 cal. lol
I'm only messing with you.
Back to the original topic. I'm just a huge fan of 74's. There's people that swear by all of the calibers, and I think 5.45 will do most of those jobs. The price and recoil of the 5.45 round are definately my two favorite aspects.

Yes the m76 is a heavy beast, if I "had to" carry my 76 around I would deal with it but I would never choose to carry a 76 for extended periods, it's one of my "range queens". Yes andrew (gunoholic) I would choose a tula "sucha" aks-74u like yours any day haha also a 5.45x39 romy aimr with the cool left side folder and donky dong would be an awesome sbr to have too.

in my opinion the best ak money can buy at least on the current market is a quality home build

There's still some work to be done, but here's where I'm at in the build. I just need to decide who will give it the authentic looking refinish.

Ya Justin, if I could find a 5.45 draco for the 5.45 aimr clone, I'd be all over it. For the right price of course.

I cant forget to give props to Justin. He's helping me build it. It's pro dude, lol
I hope you have the paperwork done already for the SBR and that you are doing most of the building work! Just wanted to say that before someone chimes in about the legal issues.
Sweet effing gun BTW!!!
