View Full Version : Feature Request: Ability to "turn off" or "block" particular forums?

DeusExMachina
10-18-2011, 23:39
I've seen other forums have this ability in their user control panels to hide particular forums. Could we turn that on here?

I have spoken to a number of member who have been turned away from CO-AR due to the content of General Discussion, and I agree. It's filled with garbage and a dozen more threads appear every day. It's hard to wade through it if you use the "New Posts" button.

I know I am of the unpopular opinion that a gun site should have gun and gun-related topics on it, and not crap like "Pre-teen transgenders", so I'm just looking for an option for some of us to selectively put our fingers in our ears (or eyes, I guess) and ignore it better.

We are now complaining that general discussion exists?.... Lol.... Doesn't matter every forum has gd....

Just browse the forums you want to look at, and call it a day man... You dont have to use the new post feature..

no need for the "smart tone" either.....

I thought the purpose of the GD threads within the GD forum was for all the things that don't fit into a different gun-related topic?

Chad has a solid point...

I'd like to ignore the forum, because apparently posting my opinion in said forum causes forum members I have dealt with in the past to "end communication" with me.

CO-AR is still a useful trading post, but since disagreeing with the herd causes conflict, I'd rather not be tempted and I'd rather not see the garbage when I browse the forum.

Well, even when you click new posts, it lists the forum to the right. So maybe just scroll past the new posts from gd?

Maybe go and protest with and for the occupier scum instead of whining about a
ignore forum option? ? ? ?

Just sitting back and seeing your posts etc, it does seem you have very diffrent
politics then the majority of a freedom loving forums main group of people.

He doesn't have different politics, he is just band wagoning less. When I read his posts, I see him asking for integrity in criticism, and for people to use more neutral perspective logic, instead of just spouting rants based on emotion.

Nothing from the people he has been arguing with can be considered "freedom loving." I laughed at that part.

if you don't like it, don't read it.

this is the crap that everyone on here ultimately bitches about: creating more rules and more laws.

I think everyone can decide for themselves what they want to read and not read. if you have issues with a particular member, put them in your ignore list and you don't have to read what they have to say.

Humorous…

In all fairness, I agree with this sentiment (and your feature ask)…the "crap" floats to General, that’s the culture we’ve created here and I participate in that. But I will say this; I’m reasonably selective about what I post, how I choose to post it (tone, choice of verbiage, formality, etc) and the majority of the time I have an agenda that I suspect some readers just do not have the capability, wherewithal and critical thinking skills to appreciate. Do I post “crap” too? Sure, on occasion, to lighten the mood or maybe generate a laugh somewhere in the ether.

The topic you chose to use an example was mine so I’m obligated to respond. There is significant breadth & depth to that subject with respect to short and long-term societal impact, hence the reason I elected to post it. If one is not appreciative of the various discussions that can stem from such a starting point I’m not concerned with that.

Going forward, with respect to content I’ll ebb-n-flow with the board personality and functionality as it changes over time but will I ever alter my style or topics of choice because of you or others that you suggest think in parallel? No, I won't. I hope you acquire the added functionality you’re seeking but in the interim, please filter my account because I’ll continue to post whatever content I decide to while staying within the forum rules and guidelines while giving no credence to an opinion such as yours. None.

Personal attacks? No thanks, I’ll pass but I'm reserving the right.

The big issue here is the stuff that is posted in General, which I obviously care to read and post in some of it, but since I don't "go with the grain" as most people here, I am apparently not entitled to my opinion or to participate in these discussions.

I have had personal attacks, and people get extremely upset at me voicing my opinion, even so far as someone I had dealt with in the past and been in their home say they were "done with all communication" with me. Whatever that means.

So, since I am not allowed or welcome to post in a particular forum, I'd rather block it lest I feel all 1st amendmenty.

Deus, the thing that is really irking most here- I believe- is that you keep using words like: Garbage, crap, and the like... why does someone's frustration/praise/outrage/insight have to be "garbage" just because you don't agree with it? GD is about the "other stuff" outside of legislation, gunshows, survival, building ARs, the guns that aren't in the "AR" category, Hunting, events, places to shoot, etc... sometimes that "other stuff" isn't up your ally, no worries, that's cool, don't post there- just like me with the topic on iPhone vs Droid, I don't care to weigh in on that- but I don't cry I just move on and go shed some light from my mind on the pre-teen tranny... Have we learned nothing? Opinions are like hair styles, everyone has one, not everyone likes the guy's next to them.

AND....if you look at where it says "general discussion" on the main page. on the far right is an arrow. click that and the whole thing disappears. then save that as your bookmark.

yeah, I don't think it has anything to do with you not being entitled to share your opinion; I'm with Ronin in that you don't just voice your opinion, you can be kind of an ass about it at times. I've met you in person, while briefly, and you seem like a nice enough guy, so I don't think that it's because you're an ass.

I'm not like most folks on here either (I'm not a republican, support gay marriage, abortion, etc), but I still voice my opinion, and try to be as respectful as possible when I do it.

No. That is not the BIG ISSUE. The BIG ISSUE here is your belief that you're entitled to have some extra service available to you, on a private forum where the owner/operator allows you (and me, for that matter) to post in exchange for nothing save following a few simple rules (which many of us bend on occasion...frequently...most of the time).

You have no "rights" here, 1st Amendment or not. You have the privilege of posting.

As someone said before, if you don't have the self-control to not read that with which you disagree or don't like, it's not because there isn't a button on this forum that allows you to filter those things. It's because you have very little self-discipline or self-control.

It's not someone else's fault. It's yours. It's like TV...if you don't like what's on channel X, turn it off or switch the channel.

And stop feeling so sorry for yourself because people disagree with you. You post many things that tend to lean pretty far to the left socially and politically. Most people here don't lean that way.

Another annoying trait of liberals is that they always cry foul and claim they're opinions are being censored or they're being shut out when someone disagrees. No one here...at least no one that I know of...has said you're not entitled to your opinions. But when you voice those opinions you need to understand that others have opinions, too. And when they voice those opinions here they're exercising the same privilege to post here that you've been given.

Speech is a two-way street. You get to talk on one side, I get to talk on the other. If you don't like what I say you're free to leave and find another street.
