View Full Version : Think my boss it anti-gun

I carry everyday, sometimes it is simply uncomfortable wearing my pistol all day while sitting at my computer. So I came up with what I thought to be a simple solution. I bought a small gun safe and cabled it to the inside of the filing cabinet. Last night my boss found it and sent me this:

"I was in your area looking for something and found that you have your gun cabled to your filing cabinet. I need you to remove this first thing in the morning. Please put it in your car. Our insurance doesn’t cover potential incidents should someone get their hands on it and does something stupid. Send me an e-mail once you have done this. I need written confirmation."

I think this is retarded. I never leave the office without my weapon. The only time it is unattended in the safe is if I am wondering about the "very small" office. I hate leaving it in my car and what do I do it I ride my motorcycle into work. I guess I will suck it up and just wear it all day every day until she tells me I can't do that.

Rant over...[Bang]

A true anti would have fired you, consider yourself lucky.

My sup would have made sure I walked out in shackles.

sorry, you're at fault on this one.

Yup- it's your bosses' right to set the rules in the workplace for you based on company policy. I'd wager most(many?) employers would be very uncomfortable if they knew an employee was carrying when it is not a requirement for the job. Given that, I think you were smart in what you were trying to do.

Sounds like you got off pretty damn easy. I wouldn't have a job any longer.

Just sucks that its even an issue. I work for a very small company (8 people). I know for a fact that there is no firearm policy in place and I would wager anything that my project manager has a weapon on him or in his office.

I just feel better with my weapon nearby.

I often work late and have to walk across a big ass parking lot at night to get to my car.

And I also worry an ex employee will come in the office guns blazing. My boss has had multiple lawsuits with ex employees and just last year one of her associates that runs a similar business got shot in his office.

It sounds like you can still carry. Just keep it concealed. I've always been of the opinion that carrying a weapon should be comforting, not necessarily comfortable.

Yah, I can't really tell from the email if she just doesn't want me to use the safe or if she doesn't want me carrying at all. Don't want to push the subject.

Just to be clear, did your boss find the lock box cabled to the cabinet or did he find your gun in the lock box cabled to the cabinet?

It sounds like your boss' issue is with with the lock box not your handgun. Has your boss said that you may not possess your gun in the office even when it is concealed upon your person? If not, then you just need to work on finding a more comfortable method of concealed carry.

I will add that comfort of concealed carry over long periods of time has more to do with your mind set and perseverance than holsters and gear. Everything gets uncomfortable after 12 hours sitting in the back of a surveillance van when you are limiting your movement so as to not draw attention to the vehicle [Coffee] I'm just sayin.

If it isn't attached to my body, someone else has as much access to it as me. I am not comfortable with that situation, therefore I wear the thing. It is a nuisance that I have learned to live with.

It was after I had left for the day so she just found an empty box.

She hasn't said that I can't carry, but she isn't in yet so all I can go on is that email.

I agree with this. Your boss said "I found your gun cabled to the inside of the filing cabinet." Which is inaccurate. She found a small safe. It could easily hold your wallet and keys, which you don't feel like having on you at all times while you're working. She didn't find your gun itself cabled to the inside of the cabinet.

NOTE- THE FOLLOWING IS SATIRICAL HUMOR !!!!

The PC version:
"Dear Ms X,
Thank You for noticing that I exercise responsible firearm ownership by keeping my firearm secured from access by unauthorized persons. I understand your concern as far as others accessing my firearm. In addition to keeping said firearm in said lockbox I also keep my personal valuables in it from time to time.
Given the nature of the hours that I work and location of my vehicle on the premises I have a valid concern for my personal safety. I also have concerns for my coworkers safety as well given the nature of litigation in regards to ex employees.
Thank you
Signed
XXXX"

The REAL version:
"Dear Ms X,
What the eff are you doing being a nosey snizz in my work station? Go find your crack change elsewhere. My gun is kept in a safe place at all times and within my custody. There is no way I am going to let one of my nutcase coworkers get ahold of it and shoot me while they are aiming at you. Besides if you weren't such a tightwad we could be working in a decent office in a decent part of town instead of in this craptastic slum. On the same note- why the eff are you making me work these godawful hours for no extra pay? Besides, if you weren't such a royal biatch and pissed off everybody you contact with our bonuses would have been better because instead you spent OUR bonus money on lawyers because the people you screwed over sued you.
And as far as firing Joe and Bob last year, that was wrong. You wanted them to pull the tag team double on your slutty ass and neither wanted anything to do with your Chlamydia laden cooch and they were both nauseated at the idea. So you fired them.
Respectfully,
XXXX"

BP said it best, pick which letter to send [LOL]

Seriously though, I would remove the box, or inform her that it's for your PERSONAL effects to be stored in and that what goes in it is none of her business... or, you could just remove the box, carry concealed, and nod and smile at her request. Don't push the issue, don't bring up that you carry, best to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

A true anti would have fired you, consider yourself lucky.

^possibly this.

But since it may not be, I would remove the small gun safe and reply back with something along the lines of "Ok, I have removed the small lockbox from my desk."

I wouldn't admit that it was a gun under any circumstance. She could be looking for you to implicate yourself so she can fire you.

It sounds like your boss is familiar with what a small gun lockbox looks like. I think you said yourself that it's quite likely she is carrying at times?

The problem I see here is that cabling the lockbox there may be creating a legal or insurance issue for the workplace -- hence the request for you to keep it in the car. Since only you know the combo, you're the only one who knows for sure that you DIDN'T forget and accidentally leave your piece at work.

I wouldn't write the letter BPT advises, I wouldn't get huffy over this. I'd take the lockbox, find a good way to secure it in the trunk and abide by your employer's desires. She seems to have been rather understanding but realize she has to balance a number of concerns and your personal desire to relieve yourself of the weight of your CCW is lower on the totem pole.

DO NOT Mention Gun Safe or gun in anything...

As a boss who is definitely not anti-gun I just wanted to give my perspective. I have several employees who are a varied gender, race and age. This means they all fall in to certain protected classes and I must be sure to treat them all the same.

One of my employees wanted to carry a gun to work. She didn't have her concealed license and walked into the office one day with it strapped on her hip. This made clients uneasy. While I am pro-gun I am also Pro money (what can I say I'm a capitalist) so I made her quit wearing it and put it in her purse when she was in the office.

A few months later she decides to have a baby and quit taking her anxiety medication as it might harm the fetus. Now, I have a problem. I don't really like a hormonal woman who has just stopped taking her meds running around my office with a firearm. If I ban them outright I am punishing the other employees who might want to carry. If I only ban her I'm setting myself up for a lawsuit.

Your boss might likely be covering her butt. While she may not really care if you have a firearm she might be worried about other employees (remember her colleague to got shot by an disgruntled employee).

You said that carrying is uncomfortable...just curious as to what your CCW is? (Desert Eagle .50?) I know carrying can be a bit uncomfortable at times, but as someone all ready stated, it's a matter of it being "comforting" not necessarily comfortable. :-)

I'd invest in trying out some different carry methods so you can find something that you can tolerate wearing on your person all day long, so that this issue doesn't come up again.

You don't have to answer. You aren't the only one to lose a job over gun related stuff.

Of course I wasn't trying to get fired. What "this" are you talking about, putting a small safe in my filing cabinet? Just like many here I carry everyday and try to be as safe as I can about it.

Except the part where you broadcast it to your employer. Now you know. NO ONE should know that you carry. You can't tell ANYONE that you carry. No matter how cool they are or how much you think you know them.

Obviously sucks about getting fired.

BPTactical's letter was AWESOME!!!!

As for the safe, and "next" time.... I have a small safe in my car that is stamped with the manufactures name "GunVault". It's nice and small, can use a cable to tie it to a part of the car so if someone breaks in they can't just grab it.
If people don't know you carry then I'd point out it's a small box for your wallet or your MP3 player and you found it at a garage sale or something.

Guns? what guns? People carry guns? [NoEvil]

Nope. From what OP said, she didn't freak out over him having a gun and he was sure his(former) PM carried or had one available. She said very simply that the business insurance didn't cover a potential incident and asked that he keep it in the car. Some employers don't even want the gun in a locked car on the company property so her note sounded pretty reasonable to me.

To the OP: sorry you lost your job, hope you find something soon.

That sucks! I used to work for a contract engineering place in centennial, very small, and one of the two owners at the time was very pro gun, carried daily, very cool dude. They have gone thru some shake ups since then (I interned in '08), and now they might actually only be 8 people. I wonder if we worked at the same place. If the owner was over 6ft tall PM me for confirmation if that sounds familiar. I'll ask around and see if they are looking for another Electrical Engineer, I know they ****canned one a few months ago for a week long unplanned vacation with no call.
