View Full Version : I think I was being scouted...
So I live in Lakewood (as it says on my member banner) and was on my way home from work today when I noticed a car behind me making all the same moves as me- I turned off of Simms onto 4th, they turned, I turned right on the next street, they followed, then I turned onto the street my apartment complex is on and into my complex, they followed again. I thought maybe they were going to the complex to visit a friend but when I went to my area of the lot and parked they pulled into a spot (all reserved parking too) and turned around and left. My first thought after parking was 'these guys are scouting me and are probably going to come back later to try to break in and rob or even take my car.' Now, I would like to get to bed early tonight and from my apartment I can't see my car (it's on the opposite side of the building), and I really don't want to go hang around outside all night and wait for them to show up so I can introduce them to my 1911. I've already taken all of my valuables out of the car and pretty much just left them with trash, but that still won't help if they break in trying to steal stuff (broken windows and who knows what else) or worse, try to take my car. What do I do here? All I could gather from them was it was a late model (80's/Early 90's) Buick or Chrysler sedan (goldish color) with California plates- not enough to go on for a police investigation. [Help] I'm planning on either going out periodically to check on things (like every hour or so) or course CC with my .45, or my brother suggested parking on the street below my balcony and leaving my windows in my apartment open and listen for alarm or glass breaking and go pay the guys a visit with a locked and loaded M415 5.56 aimed at them and wait for Lakewood PD backup to arrive... Need some help here guys, thanks.

Best advice I can think of or ask your brother to swap cars with you for the night
and that way they wont come back based on the assumption you were visiting when they tailed you.

Could be coincedence, but doubtful. Could be just some kids messing with people too. If you noticed them for this long, why did you take them home, and/or not write down the license plate?
Id think wiping all handles etc with a clean cloth to remove your finger prints, that way if something does happen, you could have the car dusted and probably get their prints. Moving the car may be a good idea too, so you can listen (and not sleep).
Make sure insurance has coverage for comprehensive.
One thought would be to actually put trash in the car so it looks like there is nothing in it worth stealing, and it looks less tempting than the next guys car!

Moving your car to below your balcony is a good start. I don't know about the legality of pointing a firearm at someone in a parking lot, your life not being threatened and not in your home, even if you catch them breaking into your car.
Remove your registration and anything with your name and address on it, and disconnect the battery cable so if they do try to steal your car it won't start.
Set up a video camera pointed at your car to record anyone tampering with it. Then you will have something to take to the police.
Wishing you well,
SSB.

Probably coincidence anyway. If your bro already split, bring the battery in for the night.

Don't kill someone over your car.
Leave the guns alone. If someone is not endangering your life, someone elses, or any of the oher provisions in CRS, then you don't need the guns. You've got the wrong mindset...cars are replaceable, people are not.

Unless they have a twin...
All good advice, thanks guys.... I just talked to my neighbor who just informed me that one of our residents is a CSP Trooper and will be back tonight (with squad car parked 2 spaces from mine) around 9pm... I'm still gonna go out every little bit or so (yes with 1911 on hip, for precaution, not intent to use) just in case CSP neighbor is running late. I like the wipe down my handles and stuff, good idea. And no, I have the nicest car in the lot, can't swap with brother because we have different schedules tomorrow- I work. And I'm not just being conceited, really it's probably the nicest car in the lot even though it's an '05 BMW 3Series- which my next point, battery, pain in the ass to get to, it's in the trunk and don't want to mess with it. Can't do the video camera thing- the only thing I have is a $1500 camera, they find that it's gone.
Also, just some background, I spent almost every dime I made on deployment on that car, it's my dream car from when I was a youngin' and I would literally kill over it if it came to that- some people don't understand the hard work I put into getting that thing. I'm hoping that these guys were just messing around, trying to make me paranoid or whatever, but in the chance that they were scouting me out let's just say they picked the wrong bull to mess with.

Call me. I live in Lakewood, not that far from you. You can park the car in front of my house and I'll drive ya home and pick you up to bring you back to your car for work. Cheap insurance and you'll get some sleep. PM on the way.

I had a buddy that got tired of his beater being broken into and having to replace windows.
He finally started leaving it unlocked and the windows rolled down during the summer. Probably not the best idea in your situation.
I'm not sure I'd lead them back to my place of residence in the future.
Don't kill someone over your car.

No matter how much blood, sweat and tears you put into this car, you will not be able to enjoy it from a prison cell when a judge puts you away for shooting someone for breaking into it.
Stay calm and keep the firearms locked away if you catch someone messing around with your car.

Please don't do that. If they're breaking into your car, they're a criminal. By all means confront them in a calm manner with no weapons drawn, but don't disarm yourself before confronting a criminal... that'd be pretty stupid.
um dude you totally f'd it all up. if you think you are being followed, never take them to your residence. that is the last thing you do.

um, I would definitely confront them...maybe not with my AR on them, but certainly I would be CC, hightened awareness, etc.
on the other hand, I do see the point. a car can be replaced. I know all of us, or at least most, including myself feel like not much will happen to me, I will have the upper hand etc etc, but sometimes the bad guys are armed, multiple of them shooting at you over your car is likely.
of course if they broke into my garage (part of my home) to steal my truck "silver wolf", that would be their last mistake.
or sleep in your car. lock yourself out of your apartment so you have an excuse for being in the car.
Send them to my house. I have full coverage on my truck. It's 18 years old and I am probably due for a new one anyways. [Coffee]

CRS don't allow you to use your gun to protect your property. Keep the guns (and the testosterone) out of this.
You're insured, right? Seems to me, the courts will take that fact into consideration if you run out to protect your car and end up getting into a gunfight.
Next time, lead the guys to a public place (or better yet, a cop shop) and get out of your car there.

...cars are replaceable, people are not.
Something that car thieves should have to consider, not car owners.
No I'm not suggesting you kill someone over your car, but I'm not convinced that thieves should have the protection of the law like they do.
Most folk don't have full coverage insurance on their cars and theft of an uninsured car can be financially devastating to some folk and as such getting caught stealing a car should also be devastating.
Once upon a time we hung horse thieves. Just sayin'
Also being armed while checking on your car is not so you can kill someone trying to steal it, its for defending yourself if stumble across a thief and he takes umbrage at your accusations.

Take out some of the fuses including the starter fuse and the main electrical fuses. Not the battery since this will power the alarm if you have one for it.

LOL. That's the attitude that politicians like.
"Yes officer, I heard some strange noises outside that sounded like someone breaking into a car. I own the most expensive car on the lot and was concerned it might be mine they were after, so I went to check it out."
"Why did you bring your gun?"
"I have a valid CCW permit... here it is, sir... and I felt it would be unwise to go outside at night to possibly interrupt criminals in the middle of a car theft unarmed. They are criminals, after all, obviously with no regard for their fellow man."
"And then you shot the victim, correct?"
"Yes, officer. I was approaching my car and saw him sitting in the car with the door open and broken glass all over the ground. I yelled to him, 'Hey, get away from my car! I'm calling the cops!' and he jumped out of the vehicle and began raising his weapon towards me. In fear of my life and falling back upon the training I received in my ___ years of military service, I drew and fired until I felt he was no longer a threat. Then I called you."
"Thank you. We'll have to take your weapon for evidence, but it seems that you acted within your rights. You'll be receiving a call from our dept. in the morning concerning the legal case."

The Denver area is pretty safe, but when I lived in Minneapolis there where places where you had to watch your car. I own a nice Del Sol and Honda's are their main choice. I was a part of MNsportcompacts and actually still am.
We had our first club meeting back in 1998 at a buddies house and three cars were broken into and stuff stolen out of them.. Next meeting after trusting all of the "Mods" of the forum, we set out night vision cameras, ran out caught the three kids, hog tied them, and called the cops. No guns were used, but the amount of people running out there surrounding them made the kids stop and drop to the ground.
There is some thefts I have heard of around the Aurora area, but feel comfortable with my Honda sitting outside with the alarm. I always have my gun on me, just because You don't know if you are approaching people with guns. That being said, I do not have my gun drawn and when I have approached people boosting cars I have made sure I in a spot where I can get behind another car if they happen to have a gun. 98% of the time it is just stupid kids boosting cd players etc..
Just make sure you park near a light.. that usually scares most of them off. Also install a $150 car alarm..

The bad guys will not be "keeping quiet." They will be telling the cops you pulled on them, perhaps create some appearance of racism if they can exploit it, and generally make it look like you are the bad guy. What happened may not be obvious to the cops who come out to investigate.
I'm of the mindset that you should establish a very simple, just-the-facts version of what went down so that the cops get a fair idea of who the real criminal is.
I wasn't thinking too much into that when I typed that response, but I wouldn't lawyer up immediately. Something like...
"Officer, thank God you're here. I'm the one that called this in.
I heard some strange noises outside that sounded like someone breaking into a car. I own the most expensive car on the lot and was concerned it might be mine they were after, so I went to check it out.

There's where I was standing, there's where he was standing, there's where his weapon fell to. His weapon, my weapon, and my car have not been touched since.
I want to be as cooperative as possible, officer, but I have heard stories of good guys getting sued for saying too much. This has never happened to me before (or this hasn't happened in a while) and I'm still a little shaken up. My attorney is on his way and as soon as he arrives I will be happy to give a statement with him there. Until then, I think I need to sit down and calm my blood pressure."

Said 70 something year old man was not convicted on the serious charges but some lesser charges if I remember correctly and then put on probation and then also lost his rights to own firearms to protect his family.
The thing that hurt him was shooting at them as they drove off instead of rightaway when he confronted him if he infact did confront them in the first place before they took off. I dont remember all the details.

The fact that you are in one of the friendliest crowds toward 2A in here and being told not to shoot over a car ought to tell you something. Unless you're living in your car, you can't consider it an extension of your home and going out with your trusty 1911 after asking for help and being told various options short of starting a gunfight is just asking for a charge of premeditation.
Some of the "advice" in here sounds like plants from the Brady Bunch just itching to have a story they can exploit. I know you're not -- but you might as well be.

The chances of you getting into any violent encounter are fairly low... yet most of us here carry. The chances of your house or your kids' school burning down are extremely low... yet there are fire alarms in every hallway and many people have home security systems.

Also I now realize I don't think they were scouting me because they'd have to be the dumbest criminals on earth. By the way, I wouldn't have drawn down unless it was a very last resort, I'd confront while carrying but wouldn't bring it to drawn unless I had no other options. And the whole letting them follow me home- the entire time they followed while suspicious, I thought it was coincidence, it happened to me once where I thought I was being tailed and the guy turned out to be one of my neighbors- he even unlocked and went into the apartment above and across from me. Damn you uncle sam for installing the hyper vigilance app on my brain!

What screwed Bobby Wallace, was Bobby Wallace.
What you do after is just as critical as what you do during.

maybe I have too much tinfoil, but if I have a strong assumption I am being followed, I instantly start looking for ways out; a place to pull over and sit or a parking lot to go in to so I can watch what they are doing while driving.
I have had one guy follow me when I was a teenager....17 probably. he was riding my ass while I was in my dads truck and he was in a honda civic, I was heading home from a golf tournament. He got brake checked and then I drove 10 under for about a mile on a one lane road. He started following me even at speeds in excess of 90 mph. I pulled into a very nice neighborhood and he followed but I zipped out the back way and lost him. went and sat in a parking lot for a while and didn't see him for about 10 minutes then went home. i was prepared with my 3 iron and a pocketknife.

exactly. he lied after the fact, he didn't call for a while, he didn't get a lawyer right away. He did lots and lots of things wrong that looked suspicious and still got off.
If you walked outside to go get something out of your vehicle that you left in it, and you saw these guys trying to jack your car and confronted them, then they didn't run and tried to escalate it and make you think you are in imminent fear for your life, I don't see how that wouldn't be justified.
For some people a car is all they have, maybe their way of life and it deserves to be protected. Insurance is nice to have but some people can't afford full coverage insurance. And like the people trying to steal a car, who may be down on their luck, the guy whose care they are trying to steal may be on the verge of losing everything but is trying to scrape by doing things the right way. In the end it is a personal decision to decide whether or not it is worth it. That is what life is made of.

Well????
Sorry to interrupt your guys' thread hijack [Coffee]
Update: Walked out to the car this morning.... NOTHING HAPPENED! I'm so glad I didn't have to miss work and deal with Lakewood PD and then file a comprehensive insurance claim.
Okay, back to talking about whatever it is you guys were talking about (can't watch the video right now, phone at the office is ringing off the hook.)

Glad nothing happened. I've had the hairs stand up on the back of my neck while driving quite a few times. None ever turned out to be anything, but still good to keep watching your mirror and I've always made sure to never go straight home. The California plates do raise a bit of suspicion though.

Well the strange part is, the thought crossed my mind and I almost reverted back to my counter-surveillance training ("Section 6: How to detect and lose a tail"), but one I was just to tired to go driving around my neighborhood, and two I dismissed it as paranoia.
About a half mile from my house I start looking in my rearview and pay attention to everything behind me to see if anyone is following me. I just think it is a good thing for anyone to do, I have a family to protect and alot of nice stuff.

Well I guess I failed to mention (or you jerks failed to assume [Beer]) that I live in an apartment complex that has about 10 different lots, so there is a number of possibilities here for someone to be going the same way as me, it's not as if there are a lot of houses and apartment complexes nearby.

7 pages that I didn't want to read yet. But I'm sure someone has already pointed out that you should never go home if you think someone is following you. Keep driving around, let them follow you all freaking night if they want to.
Now I will read 7 pages...
EDIT: Yup, only took a few posts. Ronin, it could certainly have been a neighbor because as you said there are a lot of people coming and going to/from your apartment complex. But so what? Loose them anyway before you go home. If you loose them and it's a neighbor, then cool. You still get to go home and not worry. If you loose them and it is a BG, then cool. You still get to go home and not worry. Win/win.
