I was looking over the application today and notice that if I move out of state I must give up my CO CCW.

I was wondering if this applies to military personnel on orders to PCS out of state? Basically, I will most likely be stationed here for another 6-8 months and don't want to spend the money on a CO CCW just for that short length of time.

If there is no Mil exception to that perhaps I need to look into a FL or UT out of state CCW?

Thanks,
Alex

I believe if you maintain your Colorado residency, you should be able to retain your CO CCW. Perhaps one of the CCW instructors on the board can chime in?

hm, i currently have a maryland residency but perhaps i will change it before I leave. MD wasn't nice to me with states taxes last year, I can't imagine next year being better

6-8 months sounds like a temporary duty assignment to me.
I think as long as you maintain a valid Colorado residence and return to the state immediately afterwards you would be fine.

I would definitely contact your issuing authority for better advice

I keep a Colorado CCW, as well as a Utah nonresident permit. The theory being that the Colorado permit has reciprocity with something like 31 states (changes from time to time), and is the ONLY permit that is valid for me in Colorado, as well as a number of states that only honor resident permits. In states where my Utah permit is valid, it has an advantage in that it is issued by the state, not the county, and therefore might be more readily recognized as valid while traveling. It also adds 3 or 4 states of additional reciprocity. Depending on where you are going to be deployed, it may be an advantage to hang on to your Maryland permit, assuming it has reciprocity there.

permit reciprocity maps can be found here: www.usacarry.com (http://www.usacarry.com)

Edit: It appears your Maryland permit would not be valid in CO anyway, so if you're going to carry here, you'll need to establish residency and get a Colorado permit.

Big thing is that Colorado doesn't honor nonresident permits. But your ID card and assignment orders should cover you to get a Colorado permit.

Yes, you can obtain a Colorado permit if you are a military member here in CO at a permanent duty station. No TDY.

Colorado does not recognize out of state permits issued to Colorado residents.
