I'm putting a new barrel on an old Mauser action and will be cutting it down to desired length, does anyone have experience with or preference for a barrel crowning tool that doen't require a lathe? [Help]

Thanks

He can't hold a candle to you, my friend! But, if one was interested in trying it out for himself, it seems like it isn't that hard to do...!

I'll bring you the rifle after I screw it up!

The disillusionary thing about that vid-for what he has invested in the crowning tooling it is probably more cost effective to have a Smith do it for a single rifle. If you are doing multiple rifles then the cost of tooling to do it correctly (lathe) becomes prohibitive.

Sounds like good advice after watching the vid, I don't need all that tooling for a one time deal.

Hell, that's practically what he did! [ROFL1]. Did you see him go at it with the brass rod and abrasive polishing compound? OMG.... I can see doing something similar, but the way he was rotating the drill around?

BTW, I'm pretty sure he said to HACK off 6.5 inches and then marked it at 5.5 inches. I just couldn't make myself watch it again to confirm if I was right or not.

Well thats how you get symmetry out of the crown! Shoots around corners more gooder.

As far as his measuring methods- BATF approved tape measure????

What's with the fancy tools, everyone knows the proper way to crown a barrel is to use a ball bearing or round headed screw and some lapping compound. [ROFL1]

I'd actually like to know if this really works.

A bolt with lapping compound was the first thing that I thought of. It was popular with the bubbas on SKSboards.com when I used to post there.
