I try to keep my ammunition needs as simple as possible. With handguns, I buy .40 S&W. Its a personal choice and I am not looking for a caliber debate.

Currently I have semi-autos, G22, P250, and P229. I like these handguns and carry one every day, however, I am rather nostalgic for my early years of carrying when wheel guns ruled the roost. I would like to pick up a revolver for just some fun target practice. I don't think I would carry one again on a regular basis, but in a pinch, it wouldn't be out of the question.

Does anyone here have any experience with revolvers chambered for .40 S&W? I am currently looking at the Taurus 405. I don't think it would be any harder to handle than the S&W Model 19, firing .357 mag out of a 2.5" barrel. The only other revolver I found was the S&W 610, but they are not easy to find and cost quite a bit more than the Taurus.

Comments from anyone who has any experience in this area would be appreciated. [Beer]

Just my opinion, but I think the added cost of the Smith would be well worth it. Not only does it shoot .40SW but also 10MM...just in case you had a need for that.

Not only that, but I think the S&W guns are far superior to the Taurus products, although Taurus makes some good guns for the money.

If you ever wanted to sell it there's a good chance you'll get you initial investment back in full...maybe even a little extra. Not likely that'll happen with a Taurus. However, the Taurus certainly wins in the price department.

I'd definitely keep an eye on GunBroker for a pre-lock version.

Smith & Wesson produced the Model 646 for a very short time. It was part of their Performance Series and chambered for .40 S&W. You can still find them in the used market every now and then. When you can find one, they typically go for approximately $1,200.

You may also find the S&W Model 610 which is their 10mm revo. This model is a bit heavier than the 646 (which may help tame the recoil) and it is easier to find (and also less expensive). You can shoot .40 S&W ammo through the 610 and maintain really good accuracy.

I am not a big fan of revolvers but if I came across one of these at a good price I wouldn't hesitate to grab it.

Charter arms makes the pitbull 5 shot 40 S&W revolver with a 2.5 inch barrel, and what I like about it is you dont need moon clips.
