In the latest effort to accommodate its cherished trade partner in the south, the U.S. government is paying to upgrade outdated Mexican trucks that hemorrhage illegal amounts of exhaust on their trips north to deliver merchandise.
The Mexican trucks enter the U.S. under a 17-year-old international trade pact known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and they’ve created an air pollution crisis. The air quality in border towns has been especially impacted by the exorbitant levels of exhaust released by the Mexican trucks, which also fail to meet American safety standards.
Since the Mexican truckers have no intention of fixing the problem, Uncle Sam has stepped in to save the environment. U.S. taxpayers have picked up the cost to replace old mufflers on dozens of trucks and many more are scheduled to be upgraded by the middle of this year. The unbelievable story was reported this week by an Arizona newspaper that says replacing the old mufflers with new catalytic converters will reduce harmful diesel emissions by up to 30%.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is running the operation but the money is actually coming from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the same bloated federal agency that’s dedicated millions to “environmental justice” programs that help minorities get green. Under that brilliant EPA project, leftwing groups get federal dollars to teach black, Latino and indigenous folks how to recycle, reduce carbon emissions and participate in “green jobs” training.
In this genius case, EPA grants have upgraded 55 Mexican trucks and many more will be enhanced this year. Each truck costs U.S. taxpayers about $1,600. The feds justify the expenditure by claiming that it will improve air quality on both sides of the border, especially in towns that are helpless due to lack of resources. The director of Arizona’s Department of Environmental Quality says it’s all about establishing a “relationship on environmental issues.”
U.S. truck drivers are required to have the type of converters that Mexicans are getting from the American government, though they must pay for theirs. For years, the idea of Mexican trucks entering the U.S. under NAFTA has been a contentious issue because they follow the notoriously dismal safety standards of a third-world country.
In fact, a few years ago the Department of Transportation’s Inspector General determined that Mexican trucks that regularly travel throughout American highways are rarely checked for safety by U.S. authorities despite a provision requiring it. Rules requiring that every Mexican truck undergo a thorough safety compliance check and that every driver has a valid license and is proficient in English have been virtually ignored, according to the IG’s findings.
I had to pay $800 last month for my registration and emission.. what the hell?! [Bang][Bang][Bang]
Kewl.
This makes me so angry I could eat nails and spit bullets. When does this bullshit stop?
Ah well. At least I'm used to bleeding money for Mexico...

Meanwhile DOT inspectors are busy making US truckers pay for broken reflectors and other serious safety problems.

Why am I not surprised? Mexico, the cancer of North America, brings us down again. Build the damn wall already.

I can't drive my car around if it doesn't pass emissions. If they can't pass emissions, then they can stay home. There is nothing yet to tone down in this thread.

Oh now I'm supposed to tone it down? What, are you offended? Aw I'm sorry, I'll go stand in the corner and be quiet like a good little subject.
It is attitudes like yours and most other voters in this country that got us in this position in the first place.
The only reason their trucks are legal is because WE ARE PAYING FOR IT!
I am a mechanic on trucks the new emissions standards for 2010 trucks are intense.
on a red air day in denver one of these trucks going down the road puts out cleaner air than it takes in. there is 100% particulate i.e. black smoke trapping and with a catalytic brick NOx emissions are lower than japans and europes standards. the cost of this system adds at least 20,000 dollars to the cost of a new semi truck. not including the down time and lost wages while the growing pains of a system this sized are implented. 2010 emissions systems are my bread and butter these days.
The catalytic converters as the article called them are just exhaust filters all they trap is soot and have to be changed at certain intervals. there is no reduction of nox. California is starting to mandate that these be installed on trucks older than 2005. IF the truck is even allowed in Cali at all. just like certain refrigerated trailers are not allowed along with Aux power generators needing soot filters as well.
My shop has to lock up the brake shoes we pull off because they where getting stolen and transported down to mexico to be run on the same trucks that are now rolling on american highways.

I agree with your stance on politicians and the government but don't tell me to tone it down. I think you need to raise your voice.
You missed the entire point of this thread.
We don't need Mexican trucks and their drivers here, there are plenty of U.S citizens out of work who could take those loads north. All that needs to be done is check the trailers and attach a U.S legal cab with a U.S. citizen at the helm and off we go.

I was out of line earlier but there's not need to call my former home a cancer, I've spent a lot of time and money to become a citizen of the united states (currently a resident) far more than is needed for 1 truck. and still be rejected with no refund in sight. i thought that by coming here would things would be different instead i get the same shit i thought i left behind, and for the record i pay taxes like every one else
I Agree, calling the country of Mexico a Cancer may have been out of line guys.
tone it down.
I will say that the policies and politics of the cartels running the country from behind el presidente are less than agreeable.
As far as you doing the paperwork and becoming a citizen and etc etc etc.. I tell my Wife(Philippines) and my Ex-Wife(Germany) whenever I hear this from them.
"You are welcome."
:D
With all of the "tone it down" commands being thrown in here you would think we are a bunch of libs stifling free speech and expression. Opinions are like anus', everyone's got one. There is a lot on this board I don't agree with, hell a lot in this world, but it's not my place to tell someone to shut it, I just disagree and move on. Sort of like this reply actually :).
Even if we did need those trucks up here, all the more reason for them to pay to get here themselves. What exactly is our relationship with Mexico? What do we get most from them? My guess would be produce and labor?

Byte, thanks for clearing that up, I didn't realize that. Maybe my sarcasm radar went wonky but after seeing several people saying that it rubbed me the wrong way.
Please be careful around big rigs this coming winter. Especially ones from Mexico.

NAFTA, signed in 1994, had called for Mexican trucks to have unrestricted access to highways in border states by 1995 and full access to all U.S. highways by January 2000. Canadian trucks have no limits on where they can go.
The public debate surrounding the accord had mostly focused on the safety of Mexican trucks. But labor unions and other groups were strongly opposed to the agreement, saying it would cost Americans trucking and other jobs.

This marks the end of any control we may have had over the mexican drug cartels up until now (which wasnt much to begin with...)
It baffles me how the govt can turn a blind eye on whats happening in mexico, and then allow the problem to come onto US soil in full force! [Bang][Rant1]
not to mention the decline in trucking $$$ thats sure to come from this.
ridiculous to say the least....

Ok
I have both a semi truck and a dump truck
combined they don't travel over 20,000 miles a year and the newest one is 8 years old.
SEVEN thousand dollars a year in registration taxes and HVUT. (in-state only, it's more for out of state)
Plus another $1500 a year for my ****ing tractors (john deere, not truck) for SMM plates
PLUS
44 cents a gallon diesel tax (6.5mpg or so on average)
PLUS another $50 to be in a drug test pool
PLUS another $100 every time I get tested. (which has happened THREE ****ing times this year despite it being 50% in one year)
PLUS $100 EACH year for a diesel emissions test for each truck. (which of course I have to drive to)
PLUS an annual DOT inspection ($75 plus fix whatever is wrong, usually always something)
PLUS a broken reflector or anything else is a $100 fix it ticket if you don't find it in time.
But hey, ****, we just let these guys in cuz someone wants to save 50cents on trucking.
WE ARE ABSOLUTELY TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY ****ED AS A COUNTRY and we did it to ourselves.

What else is new?

I guess a better encouragement for them to drive on our roads is fix the problem or be removed from the road like we do to American drivers.
I don't like NAFTA anyway!
