what did i do wrong?

so i finished my first ar lower build, took me about 30 minutes.
but when i mated it to a complete upper and proceeded to test dry fire it i her something rattle. it some how sheared the spring that holds the buffer in place. i located then and re installed them.
where did i go wrong?

The retainer pin spring? Sounds like you didn't screw the buffer tube in far enough.

So what you have to do is; screw the buffer tube in until it cups the tit and just starts to pinch the nipple. I have to go check my rifles now.
