They have a headline story- 80 arrested in Denver-area illegal gun crackdown.
Freaking story is about arresting gang members and crime in the Metro area, sure they had guns, but that is a misleading headline in my opinion.
DENVER - Local and federal police arrested 80 gang members and their associates during a summer round up that ended Oct. 15, according to Colorado U.S. Attorney John Walsh. Aurora, Lakewood and Denver police officers, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also seized more than 120 guns. Those guns included machine guns, sawed-off shotguns, handguns and silencers.
"We know from experience that gun violence goes hand-in-hand with gangs and drugs," Marvin Richardson, ATF Special Agent in Charge, said.
Agents and police officers seized cocaine, heroin, meth, Ecstasy and marijuana along with more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition.
Suspects arrested claimed to be members of several gangs including the Aryan Brotherhood, Bloods, Crips, Crenshaw Mafia, Gallant Knight Insane, Sin City Disciples, Sueño 13, Sons of Silence, Vice Lords and West Side Locos, U.S. Attorney spokesman Jeff Dorschner told the 9Wants to Know investigators.
The operation started June 1 after Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates' department went through three officer involved shootings where two officers were injured.
He worked to pull together local agencies and the ATF to combat what he believed was an increase in crime, Oates said.
Of the 80 people arrested, 62 defendants face federal charges and 18 defendants have been charged in state court.
Defendants who have been convicted of a federal felony firearm violation generally face not more than ten years in federal prison, Dorschner said.
