What do you guys like to use to make your patterns? Any pics of said work?
I'm off to Wal Mart to pick up some Krylon ultra flat spraypaint, then I'm gonna clean and tape stuff off, and I'll check back when I'm done with that.
There are some good ideas and pictures in this thread.

Painter's tape on wax-paper that is printed on has treated me well for most patterns.

Well I couldn't really find any pics of paint jobs that I really liked, so I figured screw it I'll just wing it.
I went and cut off pieces of vegetation around the area that I'll use to help make the pattern. I'll post pics when I'm done... waiting on the base color (tan/khaki) to dry now.
Would love to see the final pics!

Looks ok but didn't turn out quite as I'd hoped... in my head I had more of the tan showing through with more foliage patterns (basically going for something similar to this (http://i.imgur.com/eyxtS.jpg) rifle with a bit more pattern in it). Also after seeing how it came out I want to throw some paint on the back of the scope. I'll probably end up redoing the pattern when it starts to wear down instead of just touching stuff up (or if I'm bored in the next few days and want something to do). Oh well, for my first camo paint job I'm happy with it.
I'll take better pics tomorrow in the daylight, but here's some with crap lighting and a crap cell phone camera...

Went and did the turrets and the back of the scope. I think it looks a lot better.
Still gonna redo it though.

I think it looks good. Camo'd, but still has a clean look. Nice work.
DANGERTASTIC!

Can you snap some pics outside? In some natural light?
Taking those indoors at night totally kills any detail or color.
That looks like a nice job but I want to SEE it! lol
I like it! One on these days I am going to get ballsy enough to paint one of my guns

Thanks yall!
It really does look a lot better than the pics make it seem, between the ****ty camera and even worse lighting all the colors seem to be blending together. I'll take some tomorrow outside and hopefully I'll be able to find the battery for my actual camera too.
Starting to sound like we need a Paint Your Rifle Day, kinda like the old AK kit build days the site used to do.

Thanks bud! I'm actually thinking about redoing it again... more tan, more brown, less green... but then again I do like it the way it is and the money could be better spent on ammo, and the green will blend better in the mountains anyway.

Git'r done [Beer]
Spray a base coat of tan, lay some leaves and branches down over it and spray patches of brown and patches of green, then lay some grass or pine needles over the spots from the leaves and blend the green and brown patches together.
Post pics when you're done!
Still a little wet and i'm not a huge fan of how the brown came out, but I think all in all that it worked out.

Nice man, looks pretty good IMO... if you want the brown to blend a bit better you could lightly spray over it with tan or green.
What paints did you use? How long did it take you?
I just used rattle can because it was easier to put on, easier to take off, and easier to touch up. I think that it took about 45 minutes including drying time.
I'm necro-ing this thread. Does anyone have new pics of rifles they painted? Looking for inspiration for matching the environment of the Front Range.
Thanks!
Not 100% related, but I spray painted my steel plate bright yellow thinking it would stand out in the grass up in Pawnee. As soon as the sun wasn't shining directly at it from behind me, I had a heck of a time seeing the dang thing. So get some yellow in there, is my suggestion.
I?d go tans and browns and skip the green. Unless you want to blend in with a city park or someone?s well manicured lawn you aren?t going to find much in nature in Colorado thats green.

Well I picked up some Aervoe Earth Yellow... thinking about that as a base coat.

Got some Field Drab and Earth Brown too. Picked up a green but not sure how I will use it yet. We are getting into the brown time of year.

Yellow base coat & then overlay a dithered hex with your different darks. Example below. Doubt this stencil will be any use but included a link anyway.
Just a thought.
