View Full Version : CCW on a Cruise
Our granddaughter is getting married on a cruise soon and I've never been on a cruise. I have no idea what kind of security they have. Has anyone ever looked into concealed carry on a cruise.
Im going to to go with no.. Where is the ship going to be at?

Unauthorized possession of a firearm in international waters, not a good idea. Keep in mind you still have to bring the gun back in to the country, good luck with that.

This, they have tight security on cruise ships
Try contacting them??? They would be a better source for the answer than us...

I agree with this but I highly doubt you are going to be able to make it happen. Good question though, I have never thought if this scenario although I never want to go on a cruise. Too tight, too planned, too many people, too many lines. Have fun!!!!!!

We've been on more than a dozen cruises. Not once did I feel threatened. Security is pretty good, mostly behind the scenes.
You go through a metal detector each and every time you board the ship. It's not as sensitive as at the airports but you know what the law says about trying to carry through a metal detector. . .
Plus, you'd be in big trouble if Customs found that thing in your bag when you disembark.
Leave the damn gun home and avoid the trouble. Relax and enjoy yourself. If you're going to Mexico or some other place where you won't be comfortable on shore, just stay on the ship. They have plenty to do if you're so inclined.
Another case where Will Rogers was correct. "A gun can get you into more trouble than free legal advice."

Most cruise ships are registered in European countries that don't allow their serfs to carry (like Norway and Denmark) so when you're on a cruise ship you're not in America anymore (this even counts for some Alaskan cruises). That goes double for ports of call.
Don't try to take a gun on a cruise ship your you'll end up in a foreign prison.
Probably a good idea to leave it at home, but we are driving to Florida to board this thing and I'm not going cross country naked. I'll look for a secure parking garage. Their insured but I'd still hate to lose one

We just got back from a Disney Cruise last week. I left it at home, and would recommend the same.
I have never been on a cruise, but my wife and I travel some. I have NEVER taken a firearm out of the country; but I always carry a few very sharp knives, you know for fishing, in my checked luggage. Actually this came in very handy, and comforting during an unusual problem in Costa Rica in May of this year. And it happened to be on in-shore fishing boat, but that is altogether another story.
As far as cruise, carrying a concealed weapon is very iffy at best. Probably the only way you would be allowed to is if you are a LEO and are only docking in the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico using LEOSA. Of course the cruise lines can refund your money and leave you on the dock before beginning your trip too.
But before you even consider that, think of the problems you could run into in many states; NY, NJ, ILL, WIS and many more. Now add to that different countries, their laws, and potentially their jails. In some you might just have leave your gun there, if you are very lucky. More likely you will get your a$$ handed to you, your gun confiscated, a large fine with more 0's than your car's odometer. And it only goes downhill from there. Your consular officer will do what he can, but your butt ain't in Kansas (Colorado) anymore.
More than likely even if the officials found a knife they liked or was against the rules the worst you would "probably" have happen is it being confiscated, and a light tongue lashing with you doing the obligatory, I am sorry, Lo siento, or what ever the local custom dictates.
Someone else said to have a nice time, and I agree, and leave your gun in the states.
Good luck, and good decisions.

Assuming you have a valid Colorado CHP, and you've verified reciprocity with the states you'll be driving through to/from Florida, the best solution I can think of is some sort of secured storage in the city of your departure/return, like maybe a safe deposit box or something similar.

I took a Alaskan cruise last year on Princess Cruise line and I was told by the them that I couldn't take a firearm, but could take a knife. I did take a 3" folder with me and every time we went to get back on the ship, I was pulled aside and was told to leave my knife in the safe. There web page said at the time that a pocket knife was ok, but the ships security really didn't know if it was ok!

security on the ship is pretty legit. metal detectors for you and xrays on any bags coming in. the princess cruise we went on a couple years ago had staff that knew us, by name, on sight, by the end of the first day and there is always staff around in any public area. on the ship i felt 100% comfortable at all times.
off the ship you have to be smart depending on where you are. if youre on an excursion you will be in a big group of other americans or europeans along with a guide who knows whats up and looks out for everyone. if you get off the ship on your own, youll have to be smart depending on where you are. we were in the mediterranean and didnt feel unsafe at any point in italy, greece, or even croatia. we had some muslim guys follow us in Turkey at one point but even then i suspect they were peddlers and not a real threat. but we just got back on the ship and forgot all about them.

Just don't do it. Security is darn tight getting on board the ship but even assuming you manage to sneak your piece onboard there's no place to store it securely and you are in for a massive s---storm if discovered with it. The master of the ship is king and emperor once you leave the dock -- s/he can't recklessly endanger your life but s/he can confine you to quarters or dump you off at the nearest available port and would likely have the company AND USCG support him/her in doing so.
I've been on cruises and there's really no reason to carry onboard or even on the tourist trap excursions while ashore. The only time you're going to be in danger is if you go wandering off on your own into bad areas of town (like Naples, Italy). They are going to do everything in their power to keep you from endangering yourself.
Just buy another ticket for either Bruce Wilis or Steven Seagal, and you'll be fine.
Dude, have you seen Seagal lately?

Cut the seam along the edge of one of the seats in your car, about 5" long or so. Get some of those stick-on velcro strips and put them on the inside of the slit so it can stay shut. You now have a good home for your gun where its very unlikely to be found if someone were to break into your car while you're gone.
I don't care how tight security is on the ship. Never fall into the trap of thinking you're safe in a particular place because of something that someone else has done (like put metal detectors in). YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible for the safety and well-being of you and yours. Especially in a fairly small space with a fairly large amount of people, free-flowing alcohol, etc.
Can't bring your gun or your knife on board? Ok, no worries. Those are only tools that make doing a particular job easier. While I prefer to use a hammer to drive a nail, a rock or something works just as well... get what I'm saying?
4-5 sharpened pencils with a rubberband around them are pretty sturdy. Careful of the sharpened end though, it can be pretty damn pointy.
Take good care of that pet rock of yours and be careful with it. Obsidian is pretty, but if you were to accidentally chip it on/with something it can become razor sharp... literally sharper than a scalpel, which is probably why its still used in modern medicine.
When I travel I keep a carabiner with some paracord wrapped around one side of it hooked onto my pack. It looks pretty cool and you never know when you'll need some paracord or a carabiner. A friend commented on it once that it looks almost like "brass knuckles" with the paracord for a grip. I told him that I just like to keep it around incase I need to fix something, it could be used like a garrote to tie something down quickly.
I also like to use an old sock to keep my change in... I hate carrying that stuff around in my pockets all day.
A friend of mine was messing around with his gal one day and she pulled his belt off and tried to throw it to the side... his big heavy belt buckle caught him in the ribs as she tossed it. Its only a belt buckle on a sturdy leather belt, but from that bruise you'd have thought someone had hit him with a sap.
Get it? Also, Cold Steel has a full line of products made from a very hard plastic or polymer or something. They don't hold an edge well, but the tips stay pretty pointy. They're surprisingly tough and really if you had to choose, you want a point over an edge anyway. They're also incredibly cheap, and they'll make it through metal detectors no problem. I have a 2" push blade model, it comes in handy in some situations.
