...and holy cow is the selection overwhelming!!!
What are some of your favorites? I'm looking for a good fixed blade drop point without a gut hook and preferably a wood or bone handle but this knife will be practical not pretty so it will need to be a bit rough. Definitely looking for a finger groove or guard/quillion as well. I would rather not break $200.00 but the right knife can steal a mans heart away. Not literally. [ROFL1]
So anyone that's made this kind of investment lately, what companies have you gone with? Seems to be a crap-ton out there now. What information did you gather?

What are you wanting to use it for? Everyday carry or hunting or ...?

I know the basics of it. But do you have a forge? or just use a torch?
And sorry for derailing your thread OP!

I redneck'd a forge out of cinderblocks and dirt... actually works pretty damn well. I've also done it with a coffee can and some clay, but the cinderblocks seem to work better. Then a welding glove, a BFH, and some vice grips, and you're good to go.
I wouldn't call this a compete derail... more like changed tracks or something [Tooth]

Yeah...somewhere around here I still have a knife I made out of a truck spring in high school metal-shop class in Houston. Can't imagine doing that in a public school these days.

No kidding. Especially in a metro area. Knife/shank would get used before it even left the class!
Of course I do realize that you are referring to the schools being unwilling to allow students to make anything even remotely dangerous for fear of being sued.

I got one of their arrow points for my BOB and it is pretty nice. Their knifes look pretty sweet too.

I actually bumped another thread when I was searching for knives. It goes hand in hand with making your own ****! I'd love to learn how.
Did anything ever come from this? I stumbled across it when I was searching about knives. I've always wanted to get into black smithing after reading this when I was little.

The only way I know how to make a knife is with a chunk of steel and a grinder.
