my wife and i were chatting with a cspd officer who told us it takes a home invader under 10 seconds to completely take over an average house and that unless you have a gun on you or in your immediate area your pretty much SOL...... so its a good thing i carry like 100% of my awake time and have my rifle next to my bed [AR15]

If I'm not carrying, there's a firearm of some kind in pretty much every room of the house, hidden but very readily accessible. Even (maybe especially, considering how vulnerable you are in it) the bathroom.

My house is anything but average since I live on five acres in the mountains. My house screams of don’t **** with these people. My GSDs alert me if any human or predator comes within 100 feet of the house. If an intruder manages to break into the house, they need to go through two GSDs at the breach point. By the time this all happens, he (they) will have a 12 gauge bearing down on him (them).

I have a friend that have a weapon almost in every room of his house to include a kitchen cabinet. Never thought about it but your right, what if your in your basement watching TV and your DAM gun is in the bedroom.... SOL. Thought my friend was crazy as hell, but now I have a different reference point. I will now smartly place weapons through out my HM, for home intruders.

Quoted directly from Massad Ayoob:

If You Carry, Always Carry
The criminal is the actor, and the armed citizen is the reactor. The typical violent criminal arms himself only when he intends to do something with it. He picks the time and place of the assault, and initiates the attack. Therefore, he doesn’t need to worry about self-defense.

The armed citizen, the intended victim, does not know when or where that attack will come. Therefore, he or she must be constantly prepared and constantly vigilant. The “pistol-packer” learns to pick a comfortable holster and an appropriately sized handgun, and “dress around the firearm.” After a few days, or a few weeks, it becomes second nature to wear it.

When the defender does not know when the attack will come, the only reasonable expectation of safety lies in being always armed.

Where I live an emergency dispatch of any kind takes at minimum 28 minutes. It would be safe to assume that all of my neighbors and myself are set and ready and never have to lock up anything. ADT is useless up here but a dog and shotgun are useful!

At a minimum, LCP in a pocket holster. If I am dressed to go outside the house (i.e.: good belt and cover shirt), then most likely a 40 cal Glock in place of the LCP.

I have one in all rooms in a security box (kids). One next to the bed. I feel pretty secure at night cause I'm 10 secs from a window or door that could be broke. I also have 2 saint bernards that hate people and bark if I fart! So I don't normally have one on my person in my house.

I don't carry in the house, but I always have a sidearm within reach. If I I have pants on I have a folding Gerber in each of my front pockets, a small folding Gerber as a money clip and a Cowboy toothpick. Of course coming into my house uninvited is certain to be met with two large, loud dogs and is generally a bad idea.

My dog is half Doberman half Rottweiler. If I were to shoot an intruder it would be to put him out of his misery after the dog had chewed on him.

Big dog is better than any security system.

Dog did bite a pizza man in the ass a few weeks ago. Dumb ass came on private property to deliver a pizza to the wrong address. TOO ****IN bad "GET OFF MY LAWN" Dog was on a leash long enough to make sure nobody can get inside my garage when she's outside.

I use to feel this way. Until 2 years ago....

This woman was my brother's next door neighbor

http://articles.cnn.com/2009-10-07/justice/home.invasion.slaying_1_delker-home-invasion-new-hampshire-department?_s=PM:CRIME

a totally random act, the "kids" picked a house and sliced up a woman and her daughter. A quiet little one stop light town. My brother actually moved there because of it's low crime rate...it was "a safe place"

If I knew when and where something bad was going to happen, I just wouldn't be there. But because I can't tell the future, I prepare for the worst

There are about 16 hours a week I'm not carrying or have a gun within arms reach. I have to go to a place a few days a week for a few hours. and because of security issues I can't carry there.

Not being judgmental, but reading thru this thread again I find that most guys that carry at home are from the metro area and Greely (which I understand!) I used to live in Westminster a while back and before I had my CCW, and God yes I always had a firearm in reach. I now live in sleepy Berthoud and find its much more relaxed. But I understand all posts, especially one of the last of ones, **** how do I go back and quote? Anyway one of the last posts about evil, or bad guys, or....know no limits...

^^^Yup. Our door has three locks on it also. It would take a very strong person to kick it in with one try. By the time someone gets through the door, a 45 or two would be pointed at them already. If by chance bubba has decided to do a one kick wonder on my door, there are plenty of weapons of opportunities no matter where we are.

after learning when and how to handle your weapons, this should be the next consideration. a weapon in each room or on you isn't crazy, it's just being prepared. one weapon locked safely away is a novelty to share with other friends who have the latest showpiece (nothing wrong if this is your thing, just know the diferrence when chips are down)

The only times I don't have a gun on my person (other than somewhere with metal detectors) is when I'm sleeping or showering, and in those times I have my carry gun within arm's reach in addition to the room gun (gun hidden but easily accessible in almost every room).

Pretty tall statement for someone with an average response time of minutes. How does he know the average time to control a house? On the other hand, if the people on the inside aren't armed and ready, I'd say 10 seconds is a pretty good bet on the time; especially for an apartment.

Anyway, I judge that I carry about 16 hours a day, and have slept with my gun on before. Showering and sleeping I'm mostly unarmed.

I usually do, but I've been slackin' lately.

I really need to do some more stashing, that's what I buy the cheap used handguns for in the first place! Biggest obstacle is the stubborn damn wife. She's not "anti" as far as me having guns, but she wants nothing to do with 'em and doesn't want 'em not locked up. I think she's more worried about the 14y.o. grandson and his friends, but he shoots whenever I shoot, and I think he's got enough respect for guns that I don't think he'd fawk with 'em or let his friends either.

This is the perfect use for cheap .38 revolvers and used Hi-Points, and those damn uncomfortable Kydex holsters. I need to mount a hidden handgun in a holster in every damn room. But I do keep my CCW 1911 handy, and an M1 carbine with 45 rounds too. If I were single, I'd probably have so many stashed I'd forget where they all were and have to make a map.

10-28-2011, 21:45
My CCW piece doesn't come off unless I'm taking a shower or sleeping (and then its on the floor next to the bed or shower).

Once you start carrying 24/7/365 you get used to it being there and it becomes like a watch ... you feel odd without it.

I moved into my house a couple years ago and it was a repo so it had been empty for a while. There's an easement that went down one side of the house and around behind the neighbors to the trail by creek. I didn't have safe at the house yet and so I had hidden a few guns around the house. I came home the second day after I moved in and came in through the basement and heard what sounded like somebody upstairs. All of sudden those strategically hidden pistols upstairs were now maybe not so hidden, i.e. could be in the invaders hand. So I got the shotgun that was downstairs and started upstairs. There is a 90 degree turn in the stairs and that was the longest flight of stairs in my life not really knowing if I was going to get shot at. Well nobody was in the house so all was good but I do think someone was on the deck out back after being in the basement and hearing a friend walking on the deck. But now the only gun not in the safe is in my hand, pocket, or in close reach. If I can hide a gun in every room, somebody can find them given enough time and I'm not going to be shot with my own gun. Then the third day some jackass broke the window out in my garage and tried to steal some stuff off a bench, luckily they dropped it and I had the dogs home and they went crazy, so they took off. I don't have the biggest dogs(min pins) but they don't like anybody but me in the house and they hear everything outside. The neighbor built a fence and closed off the easement so I don't worry about that anymore.

If someone was foolish enough to try to break in while we were home, and the Rottie and Bullmastiff didn't get them first, I think that it would be kinda fun to watch my Wife try to decide which of her guns to use. Here at my computer as I type, there are 20 loaded 30rd Pmags, a SR556, 2 1911's and 7 loaded mags, a Glock 22 with 5 mags. In the next room, where the spousal type unit is sleeping, there is her XD40 with 5 mags, 2 loaded shotguns, and another 1911 on my side. My daughter, upstairs in her room, has an AK74 leaning against the wall next to her bed. Yup, think we're good here.

I wonder why our kids aren't scared of the dark?[Coffee]

dogs are a great resource. if its a random act, they don't know how big the dog while its barking at them. if they do know, they don't know how mean it can be. getting attacked ferociously by a dog might be one of the worst deaths you could have in my opinion. most people won't bother a place with a dog, its just easier to bother someone without one

A note on dogs...I think they are great for alerting you about the presence of BGs. But don't think that big dogs that will eat a BG are the only option.

Guard dog or Alert dog?

Little loud yappy dogs aren't manly but are great too because they will run and hide while they alert you. Home invaders DO sometimes kill guard dogs because the dogs tend to get up in their business...a quiet, dead dog is no good. A loud yappy alert dog that the BGs can't quiet because it is hiding under the couch is a great asset for you. Big or small, dogs are good.

Either way people have been using dogs as burglar alarms since forever because they work.

I don't have a source for this last comment but from everything I have learned over the years it seems most home invasions happen when someones answers the door.

"Knock, knock." "Who's there?" It's guy "selling magazines" or a guy with "stalled car" who will rush you the second you open your door. Be safe when answering the door.

I would agree with that 100%. A lot of times the little dogs do not even have to be trained to bark at people they do not know.

You want a little dog that'll raise holy hell AND try to tear 'em a new one? Get a Schipperke! Buddy of mine use to have a couple of 'em. Neat little dogs but high-strung and very alert and defensive of their territory. Bred to be guard/security dogs on barges in Belgium, I think. No bigger than a football, but fearless little bastards.

Mark's dog was named Hooter, and he'd ride on the Harley with Mark. Damn little dog would stand on the top tree of the forks, and ride with his front paws just as far out on the headlight as he could stretch. Just like the bulldog on a Mack truck.

Great little dogs and loyal as hell. http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1152&bih=491&q=schipperke&gbv=2&oq=schipper&aq=0&aqi=g10&aql=1&gs_sm=c&gs_upl=2106l3884l0l7051l8l8l0l1l1l0l234l1325l0.4.3 l7l0

I usually have my XDSC put away when I'm not at home, but when I get home, pull it out and have it either on me or near by. Usually with the mag unloaded and chamber empty, for aiming practice and dry firing. But that's always within arms reach if I'm practicing drawing or aiming. I do wear my ccw holster while home to continue getting used to it (don't have my chp yet, waiting on someone to quit postponing my F'n class!). My fiance got all jumpy one day because I had it on me and it was loaded. I had to explain to her that it's not harming anyone while in it's holster, on me, and there's no way it can accidentally go off - that it must be fired intentionally. Apparently with women, rationality goes out the window when they feel 'uncomfortable' with the gun loaded. (I'm still continuously working on getting her 'used' to it.) Sometimes she's cool with it, and other times, not.

We have 3 yappy dogs and one pitbull. Here's a pic of the loudest yapper and the pit, Larry and Brutus. The little dogs are great alert dogs, and then Brutus comes around the corner to investigate. No one in their right mind would come in the house when he starts barking. It sounds like a low tiger rumble. The next pic is the type of dog I'll get after Brutus, a Cane Corso mastiff.

Third pic, Brutus outfitted for guard duty.
