seems that the history channel has gotten one right..

Prions could actually create a human zombie like type epidemic...

and the CDC tends to (kinda) agree http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/prions/

currently prions create zombie like symptoms but not the "undead" Status.

given how fast evolution affects lower life forms, it could be a few years....or a few weeks :)

Never eat the brains or parts of the nervous system of any animal. Prions are parts of a virus that are able to replicate into a full virus life form. "Wasting Disease" of local deer is a form of this disease. This virus can mutate to a human form called "Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease".

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001792/

I quit eating hamburger...you never know what they put in it! When a disease transfers from an animal to human it is called a "zoonosis". Virus's can and will mutate with every infection because they use your DNA to replicate!
You think an illegal immmigrant, paid minimum wage, will care what cow parts fall in your ground meat? Did I tell you story of the botulism I got from a Wendys hamburger...

Do you think ANY minimum wage earner, legal or not will care what falls into your food?

I used to be a minimum wage earner as a teenager...and yes I cared about the food I prepared at the workplace. It was the 70's...today I'm not so sure! You are most likely correct Irving. Makes you want to grow your own food.

Not so much the minimum wage earner as the one who travels a lot. The rate of disease transmission via person going from Fla-Rio with a 1 hour lay over in Puerto Rico has been subject to untold airborne pathogens. The money passed from customer 1-2 has changed hands approximately 1K times in a week. Every time you walk through the supermarket you have walked into X amount of particulates from another shopper who sneezed, or coughed. In a room of 25 people 1 is a confirmed carrier of TB.

The number 1 cause of disease transmission is..............................Lack of hand washing.

Read the book Out Break came out in 87.
America is complacent regarding small outbreaks of illness, RE: dog food, infant formula etc from China, Lysteria most recently from Southern CO. Each and every scenario is brushed under the carpet by CDC and other agencies.
TIN FOIL Hat Time.
Each and every incident has the potential for a biological or chemical attack. We respond with out a care and go on our way. One day the threat will be real and then what?

You should try to avoid spreading misinformation. Prions are not virii and don't "replicate into" life forms of any sort. Prions are misfolded proteins. When they come in contact with certain other proteins they cause them to fold incorrectly & create new prions. They are not alive. They do not take over healthy living cells as every virus does.

There are also zero confirmed cases of CJD or vCJD or nvCJD caused by contact with deer suffering from CWD.

It's also very unlikely that you got botulism from from hamburger. It's also not fast food employees who make the hamburger patties. They come pre-made to the restaurants. Frozen in most cases, but fresh at Wendy's.

^^^That part is worse than Prions. How many people have gone out to eat, and then got diarrhea? Ya, you ate someone's **** basically... Anyway, every time I see some little **** making my food without gloves on I refuse it at the counter and tell them to make the guy making the food put gloves on. I can't stand that kind of crap.

Also cook your food throughly and if you are in the third world country watch out for uncooked water - as sometimes that's the only mean to sterilize it. I was in hospital for 4 weeks out of my 6 week vacation in 1995 thanks to contaminated water.

id be careful going down the road you guys are going down. if you start being THAT paranoid, youre life is going to suck pretty soon. what you guys are talking about are EXTREMELY rare situations and cases. extremely. you have way higher chances of getting thousands of other things. if you want to be careful, you really need to live in the middle of nowhere, grow your own food, wear surgical gloves at all times, and rarely leave your house.

This guy has it right. Prions are misfolded proteins. Cooking doesnt get rid of them either. In one form it causes CWD, and another version its tied to "mad cow disease". There was a soldier that came back from iraq or afghanistan some time ago, who ate goat meat given by local villagers. he came down with the human form of madcow disease, and is believed it came from the goat.

Prions are folded proteins, enzymes. The strongest bond in an enzyme is a sulpher bridge, a covalent bond. All the other bonds that retain the folds are weaker chemical bonds. ALL of the bonds will denature during cooking at a temp of 160 degrees F. They may be very resistant to other forms of denaturing like pH change and lower temp changes like a fever, but resistant to cooking? No way. You simply cannot defy the laws of electrons energy levels and the laws of thermodynamics.

I think the "occupy" people are the first signs of the zombies. The only thing missing is is a virus.
