How do you get around emmissions with a show car race car or anything else you dont drive on the street but maybe a few times a year?

Live out side of a test zone. Vehicles that are 25 yrs old can qualify for collectors plates.

How do you get around the law because I think I am special and do not have to abide...

seriously though

answer: if it is operated on the public thoroughfare it must be in compliance with all applicable laws.
if it is a collectors item (older car) it may be exempt from emissions requirements.

I was required to keep emissions and insurance on my trucks even though they weren't driven while I was stationed overseas.

If its more than 25 years old you can get collector car plates for it.

The up side is no emissions required, the down side is you pay for 5 years of taxes up front.

Wouldn't that make it non-legal for street driving? I have friends who have cars built just for the drag strip = not legal for street driving. I could be wrong but if you want to drive it (even only on the weekends) it has meet all laws. I have a classic mini cooper that only hits the streets on nice spring days. I have to keep it up to date with all laws just like my daily driver.

Have you checked with the Colorado DMV? Perhaps a phone call?

If it is for Race/show only then it is on/in a trailer so there is no problem. Now after that smart assed comment said here is how it works.

1. Move someplace that does not have E-tests.

2. get your collector plates first (1975 and older no longer 25 years) then modify it.

3.register the car at a relatives place that is outside the E-test.

4. register it with an out of state relative in a place that does not have E-test, Vin verification.

5. keep it on a trailer.

Once you have collector plates on something 1975 or older after passing the first test as long as you do not let them expire no more tests.

If one has a 76-85 with collector plates and does not renew in time you will revert to normal plates and tests.

I have a feeling this is not what you want to hear but it is the truth. [Coffee]

mine has "replica" in the title and as such is emissions exempt.

The law changed recently, you no longer have to pass emission the first time around if the car qualifies for collector plates.

But since Atrain's car is a '79 I'm thinking he's SOL unless he wants to get his car into compliance but there are some exemptions (http://www.aircarecolorado.com/about-the-test/1981-and-older/exemptions/) and you can get a waiver (http://www.aircarecolorado.com/fail-and-repair-information/cost-limit-and-waivers/) if its going to cost more than $715 to get it into compliance.

One word for this question.

WYOMING

The CO DMV has totally screwed the vintage/hot rod crowd. It used to be 25 year+ for collector tags. Now it is 1976 or before and don't let the reg. lapse or it becomes every other year for emissions testing.

The DMV here is absolutely crazy. It took 6 visits to get my most recent car registered. ONE of those visits was my fault - there was a piece of paper I should have had, I guess, that I didn't have. Of course, at each visit, the person at the counter takes all my paperwork (after I waited an hour), looks it all over, and then says that something new is wrong.

I say, "Okay, give me my stuff back and I'll get it taken care of."

They read over EVERY DAMN PAGE I HAVE, and say, "Well, now, hold on, let me just look this over so there isn't something next time."

But it doesn't matter! The next time there is something else.

The rules change every time I go in there. The web page says one thing, the clerk says another. One clerk says you only need X, the next clerk says you need X and Y. But the third guy will politely remind you about Z.

And to top it all off my little 1.6 liter engine "failed" emissions because the gas cap o-ring had some leaks in it, while some guy in a big ass RV from 197X drives right on through with no problems. Wait, until I'm polluting more than that guy shouldn't I be allowed to just drive my little car around?

I couldn't hate the DMV more most of the time. I understand the need to keep some lid on what people have registered, but between the byzantine labyrinth of rules, the insanely poor service, the dumb/rude clerks, and the fees, they make me pretty much crazy.

Get your car tuned and then test it. If it fails fill it with e85 and tune dial it in for that weak sauce then test it again. It will pass and you can get plates.
Then write governer pooper and demand they change the law back.

Thanks to Ritter and the Dems in the legislature during his term, this is no longer true. Your car needs to be 1975 or older to qualify for collector plates. If you had collector plates in a model year newer, you can keep them as long as you keep them current. However, you can no longer qualify for the plates regardless of how collectable the car. Lamborghini Countach....not a collectable. Buick Grand National GNX...not a collectible. And so on.... Pissed me off! [Rant1][Rant1][Rant1]
