View Full Version : Best rail for an AK?
I recentlly picked up a Romanian WASR 10 (my first AK). I'd like to put a picatinny or weaver rail on it for an optics mount. I also want to be able to use the iron sights after the optic is mounted. I've seen several mounts that go on the receiver cover or mount to the left side, but they all look pretty rickety and unlikely to hold zero.
I'd like to stay in the $100 range for the rail. I hear putting red dots on AKs can be a little tricky sometimes.
Any suggestions?

TWS Dog Leg (http://www.onesourcetactical.com/kalashnikovriflescoperailtopcoverdoglegscoperailge n-2.aspx) and/or UlitMAK (http://www.onesourcetactical.com/ultimakakscoutmountforak-4774rifles.aspx), depending on where you want to mount your optic. UltiMAK will likely work better for cowitnessing depending on what optic you use.

I really, really liked the Midwest with the optic-specific topcovers.
Edit: I'm really liking that Dog-Leg, though! Use the rear sight as a hinge for the top cover with a rail, and then add a rear peep. So you end up with something easier to field strip and more sight radius.

a high quality european made side mount base will hold zero. at least mine does on my yugo m76 and the yugo side rail base is the same design as the russian mounts just make sure you get one that has an adjustable quick release lever

edit: i noticed you want to do a red dot, check out the pk-01 v, i've heard lots of good things about these plus they sit lower thank most russian optics allowing you to see your iron sights through the bottom 3rd of the scope

I have the TWS on my Saiga .223 with the rear peep. I'm definitely a fan. Except the finish wears off quickly.
Thank you all for your great suggestions. So far, I really like the POSP BP-02 (and the price) from eastwave. My only questions are these: do I need to buy additional hardward to mount it to the receiver and is it something I can do myself of would I need a gunsmith?

well i am going to guess and say you don't need any additional hardware, but that is assuming wasr-10's still come standard with a side rail

Mine did not, so i'm going to assume i'll need to get one.

here is a very high quality us made rail that allos you to mount it without having to re-rivet the rear trunnion rivet. Cruffler steve on here swears by these mounts and i have heard nothing but good things about them

If you don't already have the scope mount on your receiver, I would suggest the Midwest Industries optic specifis railed forend. I have one on my personal AK and it works great with the Primary Arms micro-dot. It also allows the red-dot to co-wtness in the lower 1/3 of the sight.

i've also heard nothing but good things about the midwest mount as well, though i personally am not a fan of gas tube mounts. more personal opinion than anything, more heat and more weight out front but like i said it's more a matter of opinion
that's a cool polish underfolder for sure moa, by the way what's the trunnion date on it? i like the late model cast gasblock

MOA, do you recall what is printed on top of that palm mount? I have one that is printed BF which is supposedly for a fast fire two. When I bought it was i was told the primary arms micro dot would work on it as well. Midwest's site leads me to believe differently.

Don't recall what is printed on top, but I do know the Fast Fire and micro dot mount are defferent. I had the fast fire mount before, and had to buy a different one for the microdot.

Date code is 1986, it is #'s matching kit. The Midwest Industries HG does't weigh much more than the wood, and no added heat. I personally think it has bettter cooling properties than the wood HG's

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be getting a different one. The FF2 seems too small to use as a rifle red dot. Sweet lookin AK BTW. Would like to get my Saiga coated like that some day.

very cool, i love late model polish ak's. also it's good to know that the midwest mount and optic is nice and light (that's why i said my earlier comments were opinion) as far as heat i was refering to more heat to the red dot, has that been a problem or does the midwest mount shield your red dot from excess heat?

I really like this one. I want my mount to go above the receiver. My AK is an under-folder so I really don't want to add any more weight with a gas tube rail. Plus I really like the look of the wood finish. Thansk!

As far as thermal effects of the Midwest rail, after putting 3 mags through my Tantal the stock wood grips were too hot to touch. After I put the Midwest on, I never had a problem.

ahhhh i didn't realize you have an underfolder. you can't use a regular comblack side rail then. :(

I now own that Tantal ;)
I'd take some pics of it exclusively but my camera is dead and I can't find the charger.

You could always go thid route, for a rail on that underfolder. they come with either AR style rear sight, or HK style rear sight. Website to buy them is below.
