I just built my first AR, this is my first time actually owning an AR platform so still very new to it. I figured Id just get some of the better parts now and save the money on upgrades later. ANy advice on a low profile gas block so I can drop flip ups on it? Something mid range and functional, side sling?? Thought Id drop a photo. Any opinions on ammunition to use? Places to Shoot?

Congrats on your new rifle buddy.

Move your rear sight back to the last notch, as far as it will go.

Why dont you want your front sight?

You should keep it.

As far as putting a gas block(which I think you should keep the FSB)

If you MUST, keep the FSB an just shave it down.

Gas blocks can move and you dont want that.

I have a friend with an M4 and he has a DD rail with flip sight. It makes NO sense to me because of the short sight radius on a 7" rail.

As far as ammo, I feed my rifles everything, if it doesnt take it, its a piece.

I would recommend federal from walmart works fine. Winchester is good.

I use alot of M855,But check your chamber first and see if its 5.56, I hear Del-ton SAYS its 5.56 but then you ream it and its not

How do you go about staking that? Do I need to drill through it??

No.

You need a punch and a hammer.

Let me take some pics and show you.

That sounds like an easier idea without having to put other pieces on it. Thanks

There is no other pieces you have to put on.

It literally takes 30 seconds to do.

I say it because it WILL move. I have seen it over and over. If you own a safe queen and shoot it once every couple months then ya, it might not move.

I say stake it because thats the right way to do it. Its like saying "Hand tightening your lugs nuts is fine, you dont have to torque them"

Some people lock-tite, I like to do things the correct way, not what might work.

Ill be MORE than happy to help, just let me know so Im not wasting my time.

+1. Keep the pinned FSB and cut it down. I would recommend an 11" or 13" rail if you want a flip front sight.

The last Del-Ton barrel I used headspaced out perfectly when I checked it. Unless their quality control is poor it should be a 5.56. If you have the headspace checked keep in mind 5.56 NATO has slightly different specs than .223 Remington.

As far as Dangertastic's comment about reaming the chamber, If your have a chrome lined barrel you really can't ream it. If you don't have a chrome lined barrel and the chamber is too short (insufficient headspace) it can be reamed out.

I never used to stake mine. Partly because I kept changing my mind about which sling end plate I wanted to run. Never had a problem with them coming loose, but my rifles are pretty much just range toys. Once I settled on the end plate I knew for sure I wanted to keep, I staked them.

Im definitely interested in any ways and tricks with keeping this thing running the right way. I plan on taking it out quite a bit so no waste. I appreciate it!
