View Full Version : Traveling through Indian country with a firearm
I travel through New Mexico and Arizona a few times a year. And the other night I watched a Indian res cop show, and this guy gets stopped,' they end up takeing his pistol because he can't show proof of ownership. I dont want that happening to me, so I'm thinking about getting my initials and the last 4 digits of my ssn etched on to a few of the guns I travel with. Do you think that would be enough for proof of ownership???
Thanks.

I think I'd go to Office Max, buy a sales receipt book and make up my own receipts if I was worried about it. Or make up some other document such as an inventory list addressed to an insurance company with your gun info on it.
I wouldn't engrave anything into my guns, personally.
when im driving around the country i bring the receipt and business card of the place i bought it from in my wallet . if its your cc gun then there should be some record with the state but i would not know as i dont carry .
I have heard about the res. LEOs doing that and the only thing I could see why they would do that is because they wanted to add a new gun to their personal collection.

Seriously??? etching info on a gun that is not a form 1?? Carry the damn thing in your vehicle don't answer any questions and DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH!!!. Yes the res is sovereign land where only the res cops and feds have jurisdiction. If it is in a secure place as per fed laws for transportation of a firearm across state lines where CCW is not recognized you are GTG. DO NOT BE BULLIED by the res LE know your rights PRIOR to interstate transportation of guns, not when it is too late.

Your title sounds like a line out of a 1950's "B" western movie,.
Stick to the intestate highways and don't go sight seeing on any secondary roads on reservation land, and you will have nothing to worry about.

Forgot to ask. Who was "this guy" traveler or local resident? Like most places the res cops do not like non-LE's in possession of firearms. NOT TO imply ALL LE's are like that so don't turn this thread in to a LE bash fest.
Indian reservations have their own laws. Just like traveling into another state, you need to be familiar with the laws or you're taking your chances.
Play nice here folks, lets not let this turn into a bad or bashing thread.
