Since this entire section of the forum disappeared, I thought I would start this thread for everyone to post their pictures in. Some of you had some pretty nice stuff and it would be a shame not to share it. Again.

I'll kick it off with a shot of my new favorite knife. My ESEE-4. Picked it up from Rapid Fire Bunker about a month ago. [Awesom]

I've carried the Izula for my EDC ever since I got it. It's a 2 1/2" blade and small and light weight. You can get them with micarta scales now or paracord the handle like I did. Great EDC knife IMHO.

As is the handle fits my hand pretty well. Not sure I want to change that. A big ol' horn handle would be interesting though.

I don't mind the size/shape of the handles that are on it. I just think they might look nicer if they weren't made out of black plastic. I think it would look awesome with an identical set of grips made out of a nicer material.

Here is my SOG Seal pup. I like this knife a lot too. I had the leather sheath made specifically for the knife at Rocky Mountain Tanners. Don't know if the leather guy is still there but he said he would take on my project and wouldn't be taking on too many more. That was last year sometime. Very solid work in sheath.

It is well worn, but I am incredibly proud to be it's new caretaker.

I have been working on this knife and sheath for the last couple weeks. It has taken me most of the last two days to put the sheath together, but I was able to incorporate a sharpener, ferrous rod and small altoid tin for a survival kit. The knife is a copy of the Tracker, made with D2 tool steel. I like the blade, but overall I'm not too sure yet. It chops great and works as it should, but I am used to traditional blades. I don't care for the saw too much. I have chopped several 4-5" trees and branches, and made a long bow with arrows using only the knife. A lot of the trees and branches were pinon and elm trees. A little time to resharpen and it is back to a shaving edge.6576065761รข€‹

I actually kind of like the look of that blade. How thick is it?

encorehunter
06-06-2016, 20:14
It is 1/4" thick. The blade is about 2" wide at the widest point. I am tempted to grind down the saw on the back some. I still need to off set the teeth a little as well. This is the problem with buying a blank. I hope my new furnace will be completed soon so I can start tempering my own again. Sending blades off just gets too expensive when it is only one or two at a time.

How much does it weigh?

encorehunter
06-06-2016, 20:35
I'd say total weight is just under two pounds. The knife itself weighs about 18-20 ounces. I don't have a scale I can use right now, but Ill try and remember when I get home.

Are you using a coal or gas forge? I have my coal forge, but it is not set up at the new house yet, and I haven't moved the big bucket of coal for it yet. The forge I am having built now is 4x4x16 inches, so it should do most of the work I am planning. I still have to build a pole barn to put it in, as I don't have a shop or garage to work in at the new house.

I've got a kiln and have always wondered if I could use it to temper a blade.

I've used both, honestly I like gas better but coal works good too. You just have to learn some fire management. Gas is fast and easy. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Coal is just a bit messy.

You don't even need a kiln to temper, a regular oven or toaster oven will work fine. Now normalizing, annealing, austentizing is a different story, you either need a forge or kiln for that, depending on what steel you're using. Anything 1095 and below can be done fairly easily with good results in a forge.

ray1970
06-07-2016, 20:40
The kiln is fully programmable. I can bring the temp up or down and hold at different temperatures for whatever times I want. Not sure what type of temps are needed for blade making but I know I can get up to 2000 degrees. It might go higher. I can't remember.

Well you can do a whole professional heat treat if you get the right quenchant. How big is the kiln?

ray1970
06-08-2016, 21:56
Not real big but big enough for just about any reasonable knife blade. Couldn't do a sword or anything.
