View Full Version : Advice on wrist watch

My wife wants to get me a decently nice wrist watch as a gift. She wants it to be something classy I can wear out and such and with hand dials but I also want it to be useful when I backpack as such. Obviously changing the bands is easy, you can get a metallic chain one and replace it with a Velcro one for trips but anyone have recommendations for under $200? It would be nice if it had altimeter, compass, barometer or something useful but it's not mandatory. And by classy it just needs to have time hands and be probably metal even if black, just no rubber sport watches.

A stainless steel Swiss Army watch would fit the bill. Here's some (http://www.ewatches.com/swiss-army-watches/Swiss-Army-WATCHES.asp?bo_brand_id=2299)(both above and below your budget)

Don't know if that's a good place to buy from (just did a quick google search for Swiss Army Watch).

Might go look at TJMaxx for a well priced local one (I'm sure there's a ton of places to find them in Denver)

Sports Authority has some (http://www.sportsauthority.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=1785610).

I have a very nice black Seiko diver's watch for dress wear, on a black metal band. Day to day I wear a cheap shit Timex Ironman on a velcro band. IIRC, the Seiko was ~$180ish, and has an analog face with an inset digital display for time/date/timer/stopwatch.

Another +1 on the Citizen. I've had my eco-drive for over 5 years now, and it has survived better than any other watch I have had.

I wear a Seiko I've had for almost 20 years, its my second one ... the only reason I don't still have the first one is because a "disadvantaged urban youth" with a .25 Raven relieved me of it.

Only downside to my Seiko is that its a Quartz watch (so needs a battery) ... go with a self winding if you can.

I love my T-Touch, but it was more than $200 :)

Wonder if you can find them used for around that?

With some judicius googling and hunting you should be able to find one under 200. An example (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=suunto+core&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=BBc&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&num=20&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1133&bih=833&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=3091061501759411339&sa=X&ei=hzSsT769J-vYiQK_39H_AQ&ved=0CKwBEPMCMAo4FA).

Guy I work with has one, nice watch but I find them a little bulky (they're pretty thick)

I have a Rolex submariner and a Suunto core military. The suunto is pretty nice. I tend to wear it a lot. Ive been skydiving, scuba diving, hiking, flying, you name it. Shooting doesn't hurt it, it's a digital. It has barometer, altimeter, depth meter, dual time, outside temp, date, sunrise-sunset,compass, storm mode...all sorts of goodies. I've been really happy with it and it's not a 1000-7000 dollar watch. My .02

All I have to say is F Tissot. Don't waste the cash and just get a Citizen or if you really want to get fancy get the 5.11. IMHO

Citizen
+1 for Citizen here too, they all worked better than my rolex.

Here is a used one with I think, what you are lookin for in a watch for $68. Nice thing about Citizen's and Bulova's, is that there are so many of them in the market, that the prices on used ones are great, this one is low because of the scuff on the crystal at 7. Oh, and for all that would bitch and complain about ebay, this is a decent seller that I would trust.

He might not have a smart phone, I don't. I have a pos that makes calls, and usually stays at home unless we're traveling. Watches still have their place, however, if he does have a smart phone, there are much better things that $200 can get him, like, ammo.

I have a smart phone. Funny thing about smart phones though is they are easier to lose in the backcountry than something strapped to your wrist. Weird how that works. Her wanting to get me a gift gives me an excuse to buy a pretty nice watch to take in the backcountry but it unfortunately has to meet her classy standards as well.

Up until I got a cell phone, it was a Timex Expedition Ingiglo with a green face.

If I had to wear a watch now it would be vintage Bulova, Elgin, Hamilton... Then I would be too worried about breaking it and just use my cell phone.

Never got into big metal watches. The smaller, the better.

Casio has some analog G-shocks that have barometer, compass, altimeter, thermometer etc on them might be out of your price range

If you want something nice looking its hard to go wrong with Orient, and most of them are in your price range http://orientwatchusa.com/mens
Don't let the prices throw you, google or sign up for the mailing list and they always have some sort of coupon thing, used to be 50% all the time, or order somewhere else that has normal pricing.

Also they are owned by Seiko so quality is there, I have 4 or 5 between me and the wife, really nice for the price.

Or one of my favorites, get a PAM homage

I don't even have a dumb phone ... and a wrist watch is hardly difficult to "lug around".

Even when I did carry a cell phone I found it much easier to rotate my left wrist about 30deg to the right and look at my watch instead of digging my phone out of my pocket and looking at it. Also I prefer a dial watch as it gives me more information than simply "it's 8:43"

I still don't get kids these days :-p:p:p

Citizens are nice. I have 2 of them, along with half a dozen others including some high dollar Swiss ones. In the field my Tissot usually gets the nod. You can find the on eBay for around $300.

My only concern is that Invicta seems to have some QC problems (what is it with companies from Florida and QC ... yeah I'm looking at you KelTec and Taurus).

They have a D rating from the BBB (http://www.bbb.org/south-east-florida/business-reviews/watches-dealers/invicta-watch-company-of-america-in-hollywood-fl-27002445).
