View Full Version : ESEE Thread
A lot of guys have recently picked up some ESEE knives and there were a few threads before the crash. Here you can post up your pictures or discuss specific models. Thought this would be a good place to post the video of a survival contest that ESEE put up a few years ago. This is the second place entry.

I EDC an FDE Izula. I need to sharpen it, but it serves me well.
Do you do anything to prevent the edge from rusting?
DeusExMachina
05-12-2012, 01:58
No, is that common?
Are ESEEs made by S&W?
Haha! I guess the steel used is not great for rust prevention, but everyone says that as long as you actually use the knife, it keeps the rust off.

ESEE knives are carbon steel and the only exposed part that will rust is the actual edge because the rest is powder coated. Normal use usually prevents the rust. If I'm not using a knife a lot a simple wipe down with some CLP is what I do
once in a while.
ESEE is it's own company and not owned by S&W. USA made, blades made by Rowen in Idaho I believe, and no questions warranty. [Beer]
One of the main reasons I went with my ESEE was because of the carbon steel blade. I have found I can maintain and keep a much sharper edge on a carbon steel blade than a stainless one. Nothing rusts here in Colorado anyways. There isn't any humidity.

He was making fun of my gun.
Okay so I think I may buy an Izula. Does someone make a sheath for it that will easily go onto PALS?
Nevermind. I just learned how to read. *sigh*

I put a light coat of oil on my blade during storage. I also check it pretty frequently. I think CLP may work fine.

Here is my ESEE 5. I love it a lot. It is my backpacking gear (Which I refer to as my rescue pack). I want to get an ESEE 4 for my day pack. I know I could easily remove one knife and put it on a different set of gear or just use the same gear and take different amounts for different types of treks, but then I would have no reason to buy more stuff.

Put me first in line. Who do I need to start e-mailing at the company to get this thing into production?
I have just about ruined my current EDC knife and need to pick up a new one soon. (Maybe years of cutting wires, cutting cardboard that is laying on metal grating or concrete, scraping stubborn gaskets off of steel and iron parts, prying on things, and generally being a little rough on the blade isn't the best thing for a knife.)
I wish they still made the H.E.S.T.

That is pretty sweet. I would hate to abuse that thing the way I abuse my EDC knife though. Might have to see if they make the ESEE and where it is priced.
I know there was an old thread on this but it got deleted. Is there a place to check out esee knives locally? I figured an easy google search or a search on their website would produce some results but I didn't see anything
Check out Rapid Fire Bunkers they are a industry partner

Yes, I did. Tried a different one first but didn't like it as much as this one. I'll probably order some handles for it when I can decide on a color. Kind of leaning towards these right now (mine would look like the one in the top picture).

Hey, StagLefty.... I see you have the DPX H.E.S.T. in your collection. How do you like it? I need to get down to Rapid Fire Bunker soon and pick one up. The little pointy thing on the bottom is the only thing that I'm not sure I'll like.
StagLefty
10-27-2012, 10:53
I got the HEST when ESEE was still RAT and they worked with DPX until they went their own ways. RAT is etched on the handle pry bar.
It's a good rugged utility knife. My idea on the "little pointy thing" was that it would encourage me to use that instead of the knife point for prying or digging into something. I have a great collection of knives with broken tips [ROFL1].
For you beer bottle drinkers the opener comes in handy also. [Beer]

That's from back in the day on the RAT page on bladeforums. Jeff Randall offered a special knife for the Rat Pack members at a very low price-about $70 if I remember correctly. It's a one of a kind. It had our member #, the orange handles, rare logo(ESEE & RAT),and the handle allen heads have Rat Pack etched on them. It's the only knife I consider a safe queen.

When it comes to backpacking and hiking, I find a good folder far preferable but that's just me. Weight adds up quickly with all of the items that typically go into a pack for high-elevation backpacking/hiking that is common in CO and while a giant fixed blade looks fantastic in Bob's Tactical Times Illustrated, that extra pound on my back is not a welcome addition.

Benchmade Griptilian and a RAT-3 camping/hiking. Maybe an Izula around the neck. I seldom use an outdoor knife over 3".

Quick google search turned this up.

Yep the ESEE lowers are a group buy. The group buy was completed about a year ago, but we are still waiting for the manufacturer to ship them.
The one in the pictures is the first made of I think 150?
I'll post a picture if mine when I get it. ;)
I wonder if any would turn up on Gunbroker? I'd be willing to overpay to get one

^ How do you like that Laser Strike ?

I like mine OK. Although, of all of my ESEE knives it it probably my least favorite. I dyed the handles a darker brown and that made me like it a bit more.

Like that Ray! ^^^^
Haven't used it yet. Plan for it is going to be my "day" hiker/light backpacker.
Done a ton of splitting with my 5, so hoping this will be equal at a littler lighter weight.
I'll update these 3 as they get used. Looking forward to putting the Junglas against the Rodent 9!

I actually just bought Ray's Laser Strike and really like the niche it's filled for a medium sized bade. Added a large TechLock for belt carry and hopefully my son will get me some custom scales for my birthday.

No. Thank you for giving it a home where it will be appreciated and putting some money back in my bank account.

Looks a lot like one I used to have. You can see it in post #39 in this thread.

Thanks for the refresher on that one Ray, nice weave. I did better this time on the knot - got it to stay super thin, it hardly sticks out more than the wrap itself.
Yeah, that was the first one I wrapped. I could have done better on tying mine off. Just thought it was funny because it looks like we both used the same cord.
