http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nascar-considers-penalties-kurt-busch-ryan-newman-teams-095500095--nascar.html

"On May 14, NASCAR admitted that the organization is considering penalties for members of the Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman teams because of the incident at Darlington Raceway. There was an altercation between the two teams at the May 12 race. Now, NASCAR claims it is evaluating the information and will probably fine both of them."

And they wonder why drivers don't want to wreck each other. They don't want to get penalized.

I'm with TS12000 ... I've always found NASCAR to be incredibly boring.

Wish there was more coverage of WRC in the States but there is this (http://www.rally-america.com/).

I love WRC- and since I don't have cable I have to use my google-fu and arrr powers to see any racing I actually give a damn about- like Le Mans, GT, WRC, and MotoGP... NASCAR just seems too... easy? C'mon, a 3rd grader can do left turns all day, I'd like to see more chicanes, hairpins, and esses!

I believe there are a couple of Roku channels that get lots of motorsports. I need to hunt those down.

I find NASCAR boring to watch, as boring as golf, but I'm not going to demean the competitors, NASCAR (like golf) is a lot more difficult than it looks. F1 drivers have tried to "lower" themselves to NASCAR and had their asses handed to them, so I'm not going to call it "easy".

But as a spectator sport it's pretty boring.

This is why I like the American Le Mans and Rolex Sports Cars series. Different classes racing at the same time going left AND right. I want my ashes spread out on the corkscrew at Laguna Seca when I die! I just wish that Miller Motorsports Park in Utah had better success with both series. Now MMP only has a couple major events.

True, not trying to demean them, but in terms of excitement and *perceived* skill (I recognize it's actually hard, not a stock car, but I did get a chance to drive a car on a speedway and it is harder than it looks) I'm not impressed, it's just not that fun to watch.

Watching a bunch of high dollar billboards drive around in a circle over, and over, and over...

Not so much.

back to the original topic--that "boys have at it" directive was strained when Busch blew through Newman's pits. To fine them for responding to this provocation is absurd, and you're right, a reason alot of these guys are neutered.

Newman's comments about the "chemical imbalance" were hilarious. Stewart's comments about the wrecking at Talladega 2 weeks ago were also great.

Newman, Stewart and Harvick are always good for a hilarious quote.

I've watched NASCAR for more than 30 years, but i just can't stand the announcers these days. I'll watch the racing, but when there's a break for the announcers to ramble, i'll change the channel.

I love all sorts of racing, WRC, F1, ALMS, Le Mans, German Touring Car, Austrailian SuperCar--whatever. I love to hit up the local tracks, too--I try to go to the ones i know about at least once a year (Colorado National, I-76). I'm hoping to get to the I-25 speedway, Lamar speedway and Phillips County Speedways this year, too).

the URSS sprint cars are going to be at Phillips County speedway and I76 speedways this year

Indeed! I love Laguna Seca (well at least in watching races there and driving it in video games)- I would kill to take a RUF RGT-8 for a few laps on it too, but last time I drove a track, which was in a 1994 Ford Escort Cosworth, I found that it was possible to poo yourself while still having a raging... uh... what's a family friendly version of "guy happiness!" [LOL]
If you really like Le Mans there is this excellent doc from a few years ago about Team Audi at the 24 hour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFwoxM1MiBw I won't embed because it's 90min long... [Beer]

I was watching them race at Laguna Seca on Sunday and it was just phenomenal. Corvettes, Porsches, BMWs and prototype cars all mingling together on a tight, twisty track. And all the associate sound that goes with it.

That's very impressive. But racing a time clock isn't racing. In my opinion that is.

Just another example of trying to make something that's inheritly dangerous and make it safe. It's car racing for damn sake. If they want it to be safe they should go get macaroni and cotton balls and just have arts and crafts time.

I hear this complaint about a lot of televised sports these days.

But what with all the on screen data you can really just hit mute and turn some music on.

Would be nice if since the video stream is digital now that you could isolate audio tracks and shut them off (so kill the color commentators but keep the track noise).

three words: boogity, boogity, boogity....

i used to try and listen to the radio broadcasts and watch the TV but they were never synced. i just grin and bear it for the most part. fox also has the most ridiculous camera angles on the racing, too--for instance the asphalt level fixed camera. it was neat--once. surprisingly, it's really hard to see what's going on at 1/4" off the ground looking up a tires driving over a camera

With a road track setup stock car, it would probably be entertaining, for sure, but not even remotely competitive because the cars are just two completely different beasts.

But if you took say the top 20 drivers in Nascar and put them in equal cars with those of the road race world along with a little getting used to the car time and I think most would be shocked at the results. Many of the top drivers in Nascar have a pretty diverse background.

Tony Stewart for instance is one of those guys that can get in just about anything with a motor and a steering wheel and be competitive if not dominant.

Championships begat championships for Stewart, as the Columbus, Ind.-native came to NASCAR in 1999 by way of the IRL IndyCar Series, where he was the series champion in 1997. And before he made his mark in Indy cars, Stewart made a name for himself in the rough-and-tumble world of the United States Auto Club (USAC). He has four USAC championships, including what at the time was an unprecedented win of USAC’s “Triple Crown.”
USAC’s top-three national touring divisions are Midget, Sprint and Silver Crown. After winning the Midget title in 1994 and finishing 10th and sixth in the Sprint and Silver Crown divisions, respectively, Stewart went out and set a new standard of excellence in 1995 by winning all three divisions. No driver had ever won the Sprint, Midget and Silver Crown championships – divisions that run three very different types of racecars which compete on both asphalt and dirt – in a single season until Stewart came along.
A hint of Stewart’s impending success could be seen when he was still a youngster, for in 1980 at age eight, Stewart had won his first championship – a 4-cycle rookie junior class championship at the Columbus Fairgrounds. Two more karting championships followed, but this time on a national level – the 1983 International Karting Federation Grand National championship and the 1987 World Karting Association National championship.

That RUF (the 2001) even if it is 11 years old, would out perform (except in a straight line, something we Americans can do right) nearly any car Jr or any NASCAR driver drives (yes, including what Jr has at home too). I will venture to say if they can tackle a real track, like the Ring, then I'll respect them as drivers, like Jose Montoya, that guy can drive! But he didn't get his start in NASCAR... [Coffee]

Juan Montoya? He's not had the result in NASCAR that many hoped, unfortunately--2 wins in 5 1/3 seasons. Some of that may be equipment related, though.

Juan Pablo Montoya (http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/driver/1207.html) main race was with CART, and went to Formula1. He did good with Williams-BMW, but went to McLaren Mercedes Benz. He was very aggressive driver.

Then, he got sick of F1 politics (or shall I say McLaren-Mercedes).

I think Juan Pablo Montoya is more suitable for nascar than F1.
