View Full Version : Looking for some Hillbilly info
So I now own a large piece of property on the east coast and need some info. The property is mostly wooded with a huge pond at the lower end. The problem I've got to deal with is BUGS! Mainly ticks and spiders. I'm wanting to spray or put out pellitized poison, but am affraid it will hurt the aquatic life in the pond. Soooo, I was thinking DUCKS. Anyone now anything about this kinda stuff??
You could probably firebomb the whole property, and within a day or two the blackened remains would be crawling with bugs again. That ain't Colorado you're talking about. Might as well try to make it "not humid" too while you're at it. After living here, I can't stand humid places with jillions of bugs.

Just get a bug zapper. You can sit on the porch, drink lots of generic beer and entertain yourself watching bugs get zapped.
Sorry...that's all I got.

This is gonna sound like an odd suggestion...
www.ArcheryTalk.com/VB (http://www.ArcheryTalk.com/VB) Roll over there and ask around... Lots of east coast land owners... They're all gonna be archery hunters who hate bugs just like you do... See what they suggest.

Yeah man, Rondog is right. Fighting bugs is like herding cats. You might have some success in a small area, like a porch, but defeating the bugs around a pond is a fruitless effort.
I use the "bug bombs" for spiders in my house and they work great, but you'd need a lot of them for a large pond. The EPA might have a problem with that as well.
Sweet truck you sold to whiskeyjack by the way.

Ducks and chickens eat just about any kind of bug. It would take alot of birds though.
Only problem is having that many ducks or chickens is you would draw every coyote, bobcat and fox for 5 miles around

I'm always amazed at how bad the bugs are when I head back east. Drives me insane....
There are a few things you can do against any particular thing, like the giant CO2 emitter you put way out in the corner of your property to help a little bit of the mosquito issue.

When I live in Kentucky a few years ago I tired to repel the bugs as well. After a while I just invited them in for coffee. The spiders were nice enough and polite but the wood roaches had bad BO and couldn't take a hint. The. They wanted to borrow everything. I also had a pet slug named Frank, I miss frank.

How long did it take you to script that one out?????...............if you shot from the hip that is pretty good. :)
......not much on bugs, I hate bugs, spiders and chiggers, I hate humidity. Some pretty areas back east but the bugs ruin it for me. Not much you can do.
...........me I would sell and buy land in Alaska....no big bugs just big bears... :)

Screw that! Lets shoot the spiders first! I hate dem bastards!!
Wear boots and tuck in your pantlegs when you're walking in the tall grass.
At least you ain't got skeeters. I lived near a swamp back East for a while, and during skeeter season just walking from the car to the house you'd get bit at least 3 times. The ignored citronella and DEET too.

I got an E-mail last weak, If you put a dryer softner sheet in you pocket when your out side it keep the skeeters away. You can Google it. http://www.ar-15.co/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
The pesticides will kill the aquatic life for sure. Try the permethrin products that you can trat your clothing with that lasts for several "worshings."

I am from KY and I will tell you that I do not miss the bugs nor the humidity.
Bug lights are actually the best suggestion so far but I don't think it will work with spiders or ticks. They are fun to listen to at night along with the crickets and watching fireflies. How many of you have never seen fireflies??? :)
I noticed you didn't mention mosquitoes. Spraying/spreading larvacide is one of the most common ways to control the mosquitoes. There are some environmentally friendly varieties out there. The mosquitoes should be pretty bad since you have a pond. Also, building bat houses can be very effective. Those little buggers eat an amazing quantity of mosquitoes in a night.
Ticks and spiders be damned. Don't know a way to help with that other than chemical poisons. Check the local county extension office. I'm sure they could help you.

LOL, we used to capture them, put them in mason jars and use them for lanterns when we were kids in NY.

where did you manage to find some land? the ticks do suck in east tn, i do not miss the bugs or humidity
which state and general location and about how much land if you don't mind telling?
Most of it you won't be able to do much with. just check for ticks after you have been out, try to keep the 100% deet around at all times and be prepared to feel like you are always just getting out of the shower with your clothes on during the summer months. some places are downright miserable.
depending on the state, the hunting can be awesome, the bag limits can be really nice and a ton of the neighbors will be into the same thing!
Wont get rid of the bugs but check out a thermacell for your own use. Everyone that I know that hunts in that shit swears by them.

Set up a bat house on the property. It will help with the flying ones. Spiders and ticks, forget it. It's part of the ecosystem of that area and only mother nature can change it.
asked a couple buddies of mine who live out that way. one is in VA and the other is in SC.
Bug zappers.
Bat house
bleach in the water depending on the size and what it is like which will help kill off the larva. but if you have fish he said he wouldn't recommend it.
lots of the highest concentration of DEET you can find.
they both said the other bugs just come with the territory and you will get good and searching for, finding and killing ticks!

One thing I hated... the Japanese beetles. They were everywhere. Wouldn't harm you, but ate all the leaves off your trees.

85 acres in southern WV. I grew up there as a kid, so I know all about the hunting and shitty humidity. The bag limit is still 4 deer/year! I dont ever remember the ammount of bugs though. I grew up on a dairy farm that had been there for years, I was thinking the bugs might be bad because the land is all wooded and no people activity for a long time. The pond is FULL of crappie and large mouth though :) The bat house is a great idea, never heard of that before. There are lots of bats around already, so maybe bringing more in will help with the flying bugs.
bug zappers dont work for skeeters from my research a few years ago. they make propane powered flame gizmos that can attract and kill all skeeters within miles. they are kinda pricey, but i'd pay to never see a skeeter again

well, in WV there are fights between small birds and the mosquitos at the bird feeders. the birds try to eat out of the feeder and the mosquitos try to eat the birds! damn things get big out there![Tooth]

very cool, I have a buddy that lives in charleston, WV. He has a place up in alaska I went to last July, pretty damn awesome!
I think zappers and the bat houses are the way to go. that should help but nothing will stop the wrath of the insects.
bird feeders as well, duck boxes around the ponds and lots of fish will also help keep the insects controlled.
With the bats just make sure to keep any building sealed up really well, I hear about them getting into houses quite a bit or making an attic or barn their home

Awesome, Charleston is only 45mn away. I've got a trip planned for mid June, so I'll build the bat houses, move in some ducks and see what happens. There is a large flock of turkeys that live there already, so not sure the ducks are gonna help much. I'm thinking the steam/smoke from making some moonshine should help with the bug problem too! ;)

The fish in the pond will keep the mosquitos under control - they eat the larva. Ticks, you'll just have to get used to. The best natural suggestion I've seen for those is to keep nonvenomous snakes around. That will keep the rat/mouse population under control which will give the ticks fewer meals. Not to mention, king snakes will eat the rattlesnakes - twofer!

they make traps for them that work really well for like 4/5 bucks

haha sounds like you need some bats, fish and snakes to kill the little critters.
just get 1 honey badger. sit him down tell him what you need him to kill for some honey. honey badger dont give a shit.

If I remember right, you can plant lemon grass around your house, camp site, whatever. from what I recall spiders, ticks, and mosquitoes all hate it - but it has a small effective area.

There's actually a... ummm... fungus/spore/bacteria/something that comes in a white powder that you spread around and it eats the larvae. But if you're on a small 1/4 acre lot, won't do you any good, because they'll come in from your neighbor's properties. They need to spray that stuff out of an airplane over hundreds of acres to really make a difference.
